I'm downtown, I very briefly saw snow mixed in with the rain and sleet

but it was mostly all rain and sleet and that's all that stuck at my house

I don't expect much from this one. For Raleigh I would say under 1" of snow at best with a change to sleet and some freezing rain (maybe a light glaze as precip ends).

With the timing wouldn't even that cause a major headache on roads?

Yes

Even if this isn't a big deal, its going to make the afternoon commute a big deal

It has been cold so anything that falls will stick to roads. Could be a higher impact than most would think for the Friday evening commute. However with that said we could easily end up with just about nothing in this one. It is as marginal as gets.

On the flip side Wake County DOT has been salt spraying the roads like champagne on NYE. Most roads shouldn't be dangerous unless the temperature dips below the mid 20s. Doesn't mean the retarded ass drivers around here won't be dangerous.

^^ Hard to say what schools will do with an afternoon event. It is possible they will release early. We will see what happens once advisories go up (which if they do will happen around 4pm or so). Some may just close all together, especially with any mention of ice.

I plan on telling my boss that they say freezing stuff may start at 1 pm since he usually gets in the office at 12-12:30 and hope he just says fuck it Im not coming in you guys go ahead home. I think at 4 pm if we get any stuff the drive home is gonna blow just due to people freaking out.

so, what i'm really scared of is something like that storm we had several years ago & people were stuck on the highway for like 10 hours or something crazy. my neighbor at the time walked a couple of hours back to his apt from his car he left on the side of the road. i have to be back to pick up my kid from daycare by 530p.

what time should we plan on getting out of raleigh? there's a couple of stores i wanted to hit on the way home from unc, but i'm worried i might not have time.

Chatman isn't closed, closing at 11:30 though. I expect Wake will follow suit and just close at 11:30. That way it counts as a full day and no make-up day required.

Yeah I dont want some multi hour clusterfuck ride home on a Friday. Hopefully since they have been salting the roads since yesterday things will be alright.

I remember that clusterfuck back in 2005. I took side roads and got home maybe 10 minutes later than usual (60 min commute). Don't follow the herd...

Because of all of the discussions and early warning on this "event" the Raleigh weather bubble has been activated and nothing will happen. You heard it here first.

It's good that you remember that, considering this could end up being a similar situation. From what I understand the city is already taking some precautions, which is still more than what they did in 2005 with the main roads. The amount really isn't the concern, it's more about the timing and how people are gonna react to it. Bottom line is that it is definitely cold enough for some kind of frozen precipitation (snow/sleet/freezing rain), but there isn't a whole lot of moisture to work with. Whatever comes through will be here around late morning/early afternoon and should be out in late afternoon/early evening.

BTW, a Winter Weather Advisory has been issued:

Quote :
"THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN RALEIGH HAS ISSUED A WINTER
WEATHER ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM NOON FRIDAY TO
MIDNIGHT EST FRIDAY NIGHT.

* LOCATIONS...CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA EXCLUDING THE FAR SOUTHEAST COUNTIES.

* HAZARD TYPES...SNOW...FREEZING RAIN...FREEZING DRIZZLE AND A
LITTLE SLEET.

* ICE ACCUMULATIONS...A 0.10 TO 0.15 OF AN INCH POSSIBLE ACROSS
THE CENTRAL PIEDMONT EXTENDING NORTHEASTWARD INTO THE NORTHERN
COASTAL PLAIN.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... A HALF TO AN INCH ACROSS THE NORTHERN
PIEDMONT...MAINLY NORTH OF HIGHWAY 64 WITH THE HIGHEST TOTALS
OCCURRING FROM THE TRIAD TO THE VIRGINIA BORDER.

* SLEET ACCUMULATION...A QUARTER OF AN INCH OR LESS...MAINLY
ACROSS THE FAR NORTHERN PIEDMONT.

* TIMING...PRECIPITATION IS LIKELY TO DEVELOP ACROSS THE WESTERN
PIEDMONT BY EARLY AFTERNOON...THEN SPREAD EASTWARD...REACHING
THE COASTAL PLAIN BY LATE AFTERNOON. THE BULK OF PRECIPITATION
WILL OCCUR BETWEEN 2 PM AND 9 PM.

* IMPACTS...SNOW AND ICE ACCRUAL WILL LEAD TO SLICK
ROADWAYS...ESPECIALLY ON BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES...CREATING
HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS. THIS WILL HAVE AN IMPACT ON THE
EVENING RUSH HOUR. EXPOSED OUTDOOR OBJECTS SUCH AS
FENCES...POWER-LINES... AND TREE LIMBS WILL GAIN A THIN COAT OF
ICE. THIS ICE ACCRETION MAY CAUSE WEAKENED OR DISEASED TREE
LIMBS TO BREAK OFF. SIDEWALKS AND STEPS LEADING TO BUILDINGS
WILL QUICKLY BECOME SLICK AND HAZARDOUS.

* TEMPERATURES...ONCE THE PRECIPITATION STARTS...TEMPERATURES WILL FALL
AND REMAIN BELOW FREEZING UNTIL LATE SATURDAY MORNING.
THUS...WHAT ACCUMULATES ON THE ROADWAYS WILL REMAIN ON THE
ROADS THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW...SLEET...OR
FREEZING RAIN WILL CAUSE TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR
SLIPPERY ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES...AND USE CAUTION WHILE
DRIVING."

What's the deal. It's sleeting and icing in the foothills already.

Is this gonna be a mess/road disaster here in Raleigh?

Disaster is all relative to how much sticks to the roads and how many dumbasses manage to do dumbass things. Its very dry out with not a lot of moisture to work with so what does fall will be light however if the majority turns out to be freezing rain it could be enough to glaze over some roads and the timing is gonna suck with the majority falling between 3 and 6 pm.

People seem to be surprised that most of western nc is getting precip already. Wonder if that means more moisture here too.

Might be premature. We have a lot of damn sleet in Chapel Hill right now. Roads are starting to slush up a lot worse now than they were earlier with the snow. Dunno how long they'll be like this, but its getting pretty slick outside now.
