Frank Ocean isnt my cup of tea, but I can see why people like it so much. The good songs on the Kendrick Lamar album are realllly good songs, and even the "filler" material is better than a lot of other shit out

I am giving the Killer Mike album a listen now, I dont know how I missed it this year, but its damn good

I have friends who are waaay into music (some are even on this board) and friends who only have a passing interest in new music and they all unanimously love the Kendrick Lamar album

that includes people who have no idea of the hype behind it and those who aren't even into rap very much

it's pretty fucking legit

^same...my non-music-loving friends and my music-loving friends are all into the Kendrick album. Whoever said the album is disjointed needs to take another listen and read along with the lyrics as they listen to the album. It's a loose concept album.

literally the tagline of the album is "a short film by kendrick lamar"

i hadn't listened to it when i posted my list. #1 now for sure.

also a bit taken aback by reading that Backseat Freestyle was "the worst crap I've ever heard"

when that song started during my first time listening to the album, that was when I said to myself "uh oh, we may be onto something big here"

svstanko and i are apparently the only ones who enjoyed Menomena enough to mention it? that makes me sad.

i think now that the year has ended, Grizzly Bear was my runaway favorite for AOTY.

i also thought Blur released one of the 15 best singles this year with "Under the Westway", and that sort of flew under the radar.

I ignored new music for most of the year and am trying to binge over the next few days so I can chime in.

So far I'm liking Wild Nothing - Nocturne

I'll be back

I liked Kendrick Lamar, Beach House, Tame Impala, Melody's Echo Chamber, Grimes, Thee Oh Sees, polica, animal collective, everything Disclosure did, Andy Stott, Four Tet, Purity Ring, Blondes, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, Benoit & Sergio - New Ships EP, probably some more that i'm forgetting about

Disclosure is probably my favorite new "band" of the year. Kendrick's album was definitely my favorite overall album of the year.

it was a good year for music

Kendrick Lamar is good, but it ain't blow my mind or nothin'. "Backseat Freestyle" is pretty sick.

BTW, reading about the album has made it seem more awesome than my initial impressions. That being said, I've spent the past year far too busy to read record reviews or even basic information about musicians 'n' bands. For once, I'm a blank-ish slate.

On that note, why do I feel like the only honest music out there is rap from the dirty souf? And, yeah, in this statement I am considering rap from south-central LA.

kendrick lamar, miguel, japandroids, LIARS, the men

titus andronicus had a couple of good tracks (ecce homo, in a big city)
outside of "thinkin about you", i don't really care for frank ocean
i also like schoolboy q's album and that rick ross mixtape

i'd have to say kendrick lamar is AOTY for me

^that's a bizarre thing to say for someone who has such a judgemental attitude toward people's tastes in music

anyways, some of my favorite albums i thought were mediocre before i listened a bunch and understood them

I have my own standards on good music, but when people who I usually agree with on music love an album that I dont, I wonder if I'm missing something.

While I did like it to begin with, this was true for me with BTBAM's Parallax II album. The more I listen to it and followed the story and lyrics, the more I love it. I'm sure this is true for many albums but this one in particular was amazing to follow. It is now one of my all time favorite albums. I just got the record in the mail yesterday that I will frame and put up in the man cave.

^^ It took me a little while but I finally switched. Still love colors too though. Just curious, did you read all of the lyrics and follow the story?

I like these reviews:
Scroll down to get to Parallax II, they are #1

Cool. I wanted to buy that book that was only for sale last week that had Tommy's notes along with the lyrics about the story with lots of artwork and photos. It also came with a sweet Night Owl shirt. I found out about it after it ended. Missed it by hours .

For the record, I'd like to retract my endorsement of this post. The album is incredible. I don't love every single piece of it, but as a whole, I'm a big fan.
