If I go the wireless route using the ubnt gear, what security concerns would there be and how could I mitigate them? I would be using WPA2 - AES for the wireless signal. Your biggest concern is someone sitting at the street and snooping the traffic. You can crack WPA2-AES in about a half hour. But living in a rural area, unless you've got a lot of money or are a big name personality, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

Thanks for all the input guys. I just ordered the 2 ubiquiti nanostation M5s. I will test them out next week.

One last question, does anyone know if TWC will not like me using my own equipment to get the signal to my house? I am doing this to avoid the $6800 they were going to charge me to run the cable to my house. I am having the internet installed at my rental house which is at the road and mounting one antenna to a light pole in the yard and the other to the roof of my house. The old couple that lives there does not have a computer so I will not be sharing the internet connection with them.

I can't imagine that they would, but I wouldn't go advertising your plans or anything. Talk to your tenants and just bring a laptop to have on site for when the tech gets there. Or let him do his thing and say they're getting a computer after the new year.

if you buy the ubiquiti TDMA gear, no one is hacking anything without the same gear because TDMA is not a standard 802.11 transmission protocol.

and yes, a docsis 3 modem will work with docsis 2 service

[Edited on December 30, 2012 at 9:26 AM. Reason : the airmax stuff is tdma]

[Edited on December 30, 2012 at 9:29 AM. Reason : ^^ you don't need a CPE, just a couple bridges]

Strange - I just got a letter in the mail saying my promotional pricing is about to expire. As a valued customer you are eligible for a new promotional rate of $38.95 (i'm currently paying $54 for extreme internet 30/5 + modem fee). It says I don't need to do anything and I'll automatically see the change on my next statement.

I feel like someone screwed up here:

Lesson learned. Call sales. Tell them you got a letter.

^I have the same service and got the same letter. Your rate is going to go up because they are stupid. The $38.95 is the base rate and then there is +$20 for the extreme. I called and they gave me back the original rate right away.

Just bought the SB6141 from Amazon, hope there won't be any issues with the internet service and using my own modem.

Also called TWC to get a $10 service discount reinstated, the customer service rep took forever to put it back on, probably just to make it seem like it was a big deal.

I just got a letter from Suddenlink (local cable internet) saying I had to pay $5/mo or buy a modem. I'm going to buy a modem, just don't know which yet. I asked a tech in a chat thingy what kinds were approved or whatever & she didn't know, just that it needed to be DOCSIS 2.0. I know that 3.0 is what's current & is faster or whatever, but I only pay for up to 10mbps anyway, so is the extra money for 3.0 worth it? I think they provide for up to 50mbps out here, but it's $texas & there's no way I'll ever pay for it. Also, I have the option of buying a used modem from them for $50 or a new one for $75. What should I do?

I finally found a list of compliant modems. That SB6141 isn't on it, but 6121 is...

Is this okay? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Motorola-SURFboard-SB6121-DOCSIS-3-0-Cable-Modem-Sb-6121-Comcast-COX-Time-Warner-/151002828982?_trksid=p2047675.m1851&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D163%26meid%3D5917901923542869221%26pid%3D100005%26prg%3D1088%26rk%3D3%26sd%3D330838934560%26

and what does SD stand for?

Suddenlink sold me an Arris Touchstone for 50 bucks. I didn't think they leased equipment?

I also get 50meg service for 55 bucks a month. There was a price drop recently call them and ask about new campaigns. I was paying like 30/mo for 15meg and while on a tech support call I told the rep to humor me with 50 meg prices, knowing full well she'd be like oh it's 109/mo without a bundle.

Nope, 60 bucks a month and i kept my mini loyalty discount. I would have picked up a 6141, but she billed the modem to the account and I was able to pick it up that day. No complaints.

Well, I just got this letter yesterday, & they're going to start leasing the equipment next month/sometime in the future (I don't remember exactly when it said). I wasn't paying anything over the monthly service fee before.

I asked via chat if the SB6141 would work, & they said yes. Now I have a different person & I'm asking about pricing bc I'm paying $37/mo for 10mbps.

edit: Chat man says they upgraded the speed in my neighborhood recently, so I actually have up to 15mbps now for my same $37. He couldn't do anything to bring the price down. Oh well..
