the headline on nascar.com says "hit hard at daytona". someone was really using their head when they came up with that one.

[Edited on February 23, 2013 at 11:31 PM. Reason : but, yeah, daytona president said they'll race tomorrow]

Does NASCAR have kevlar straps on the wheel "assemblies" (for lack of a better word) like F1 and I presume Indy do to prevent tires flying off like that? just curious

i don't think so. i know they have them on the hoods and deck lids. they have some devices to keep driveshafts from flying out as well. maybe some more stuff like that i'm not aware of.

in cases like this, the wheel has usually come apart in such a way that a kevlar strap wouldn't do any good because for it to actually have a chance of retaining the wheel it would have to be installed in a manner that would prevent rotation. remember, these cars don't have IRS.

I assume that in this case it probably machined off the axle anyway. Hell, even in F1, the tires usually go flying when hit hard enough.

they used to race motorcycles on oval tracks but stopped because fans and riders died all too often. IMO plate racing is similarly too dangerous and they should run the road course at plate tracks until they can figure out a way to allow drivers to be able to get away from each other on the big track.

plus i want the team who brought the best combination of car, driver and pit strategery to win the race. winning a plate race takes slightly more talent than winning a game of bingo.

Aarron is fucking stupid once again. You can tether suspension parts but you can't for rotating parts. Happens in all auto racing. Stop comparing the two sports and make your own thread

While I know this would not happen at all, I wish that this accident could be the end of high-speed super-speedway plate racing. its so boring, the crashes are the only interesting part. All the new tracks are these boring high-speed tracks, I wish we could bring back the North Wilkesboros.

Asking fans close to the track today to relocate is fucking stupid. These fans have spent hundreds of dollars on tickets and prepared months in advance for the biggest race of the year. You don't make them give that up on the day of the race. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but they have been discussing it a bunch this morning.

as a point of clarification, you can see the tire resting on the control arms in the stands in the photos.

"respectable"? LOL.

Restrictor plate racing doesn't require any driver talent. It requires luck.

See if you have the same thing to say next week in Phoenix...

^^ when you qualify first and stay in the top 10 for the entire thing, that means that the driver and team did something right. its not like she made it to 8th because of some wrecks, it was a respectable finish.

Could somebody please explain to me in one (or two) sentences how NASCAR is not just driving around in cricles avoiding crashes?

I am assuming that these guys stay in the same gear the entire race and don't shift nearly as much as the F1 types, but can somebody prove me wrong?

Baseball is about avoiding outs

Basketball is about avoiding the other team scoring

Volleyball is about avoiding letting the hit the ground.

They all have people that are interested in them for their own rules/points. If you follow the sport you know what to look for and watch

If you want to play magic the gathering that's fine too. If you want to learn about racing you are welcome to join me to any of the races I may go too. Some races are boring as well as most other sports. For someone to sit on a fucking computer and say racing ain't shit has no clue what they a talking about

Please explain to me how F1 is a sport? I mean driving around a road course in a paddle shift automatic turbo charged go kart cannot be a serious sport. Also F1 cannot be considered racing, WHEN THE PASS OF THE YEAR IN A SPORT IS ONE CAR PASSNG 2 ITS PATHETIC.

OK now I will not entertain you anymore.

Ragged I need some white people to take me to a race. 50 cent informed the world that their were no blacks at daytona.

I found the Nationwide race much more entertaining than the Cup race. The Nationwide cars are not as susceptible to the "aero-tight" condition that that the Cup cars are. This may be due to the speed/horsepower/downforce relationship.

I think we will truly see how the Gen-6 cars behave in the next two weeks with Phoenix & Las Vegas races. Then we will see how tough they are at Bristol.

One of the things I didn't like about the past weeks racing was the fact that a car could be out of commission by spinning through the grass. Several cars were messed up by the splitter grabbing and crumpling all the sheet metal on the front clip. Even Jimmie did it doing his burnout.

^moody may be correct that drivers could have tried to pass more but they had to drive that way to make it to the last lap given the rules package. With the tiny rear spoiler trying to push a guy to the front was not worth the risk of crashing half the field until you see the white flag.

they should go back to tandem racing or do something that forces the drivers to lift off the throttle in the turns.
