kinda related, but a guy I'm friends with completed a full Ironman Triathalon competition last year. I didnt realize how much was involved in an Ironman
Quote : | "An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) consisting of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon 26.2-mile run, raced in that order and without a break. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race, where the Ironman race starts at 7:00 AM, the mandatory swim cut off for the 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim is 2 hours 20 minutes, the bike cut off time is 5:30 PM, and all finishers must complete their marathon by midnight." |
my respect for him went way up. Especially since he looks like an everyday guy, brews his own beer, doesnt diet, etc.1/15/2013 9:25:56 AM |

im more excited about the guy or gal that pushed hard and could not finish the race than some guy that coasts to a marathon finish barely breaking a sweat.

That Death Valley race is run annually. It is called the Badwater 135. It runs from the lowest point in Death Valley to Whitney Portal -- the trailhead to Mount Whitney (highest mountain in the lower 48).

I used to be big into marathons before I had a kid. I could do them between 330 to 340ish depending on conditions and such. Someday I will get back into it, but for now I have cut back.
It is crazy what it does to the mind and body. Most runners either get sick of it or get absolutely addicted to it and have it take over their life. I truly believe that distance running is one of our primal instincts that goes back a long ways. 2/24/2013 11:49:41 PM |

the whole marathon thing makes me wonder what escape distance is for humans. I guess a way to think of it is "how far could a lion get to you before you try to escape?" Then again running may make you more noticeable, so idk.

Quote : | " One runner dead, 30 hospitalized after Tel Aviv half-marathon
A man in his 30s died and four people were put in medically induced comas on Friday after suffering heat stroke and dehydration while running a half-marathon in Israel.
The race was run in temperatures that climbed from the 70s at the 5:45 a.m. (11:45 p.m. Thursday ET) start but approached 90 degrees in less than two hours.
City officials and organizers of the Tel Aviv Gillette Marathon last week decided to postpone the full race until March 22 because the forecast called for temperatures approaching 100 degrees. The starting time of Friday's half-marathon was moved 30 minutes earlier.
Medical personnel said 60 people were tended to by ambulances and 30 were taken to hospitals. Twelve people were listed in critical condition early Friday, with four in medically induced comas, but the number in critical condition had dropped to two by Friday afternoon.

WTH is this? This is what the front of any real marathon's pack looks like:
Quote : | "like snowflakes, every human body is different to a degree so, while some bodies may be perfectly fine for marathons, others are not built for it. that said i play real sports. not trying to be the best at exercising." |

Quote : | "But your body's internal balance is deeply affected. As Dr. Siegel puts it, "Your body doesn't know whether you've run a marathon...or been hit by a truck." This is why, as you go deeper into the race, your body reacts to injury by mounting an emergency-repair response. Your adrenal glands and brain produce the stress hormones cortisol and vasopressin; your damaged muscles churn out proteins called cytokines, which trigger your liver to start producing C-reactive protein. The result is what Dr. Siegel calls "an inflammatory storm" throughout your body, one that sets the stage for some potentially adverse consequences. Early on, marathon researchers weren't sure if the heart was among the muscles being stressed, but in recent years they've confirmed that it most definitely is. In a 2001 study published in the American Journal of Cardiology, Dr. Siegel and his colleagues analyzed the blood of marathoners less than 24 hours after a race and found high levels of inflammatory and coagulation markers that are also associated with heart attacks.
Then came the 2006 Circulation study, led by Dr. Wood, which upped the ante. Using ultrasounds and blood tests of 60 marathon finishers, the researchers found that after the race, some runners' hearts experienced difficulty refilling chambers. The researchers also noticed abnormalities in how blood was pumped from the right side of the heart to the lungs." |

I could understand if you're just waking up one day, go the start line, and run a marathon but the whole point of TRAINING for the distance* (and running for a good few years before training) is that such a thing like the above quoted paragraph doesn't happen.
*also recommend talking to your doctor about your training plan and including cross-training] 3/19/2013 4:32:10 PM |

It's all about training.
In my lifetime so far I have had three distinct body compositions: fatass (my current one), power, and endurance.
In high school I played football as a lineman. I was 285, leg pressed nearly 700lbs, bench pressed 255, with a 5.4s 40, 7:30 mile. I wasn't nearly as strong as a lot of other guys on the team, but was definitely built for lower body, explosive power (that 7:30 mile I immediately threw up on completing).
In undergrad I dropped to ~195 lbs, leg press dropped to ~500lbs, bench dropped to 185 (225max), with a 4.9s 40, 6:30 mile. This was pretty much solely to look better and feel better. I didn't play any competitive sports or do any racing.
In grad school I started distance running and triathlons. Gained back up to ~210 lbs, leg press stayed about the same, bench dropped to 155 (185 max). The big difference was that I could actually run that 4.8/4.9 40 every couple of minutes rather than once a day. And I could run that 6:30 mile at pace for several miles.
At my best endurance shape, I had a 8:30 half marathon pace, and a 9:30 marathon pace.
I ran the country music marathon in Nashville, and had my knee not popped on my at mile 16, I would have finished at that 9:30 pace (13.8 split was 2:04:12). I iced and wrapped it for a good 10 minutes, walked to mile 22, and then ran out the last 4. (finished at 5:20).
What's crazy is that a month or so after that race, I had basically done nothing physical. Just rested and healed up my knee. I went back in the gym and literally blacked out during my first hard workout. After a visit to the doctor, turned out I had really low blood sugar levels, and that very likely because of my change in diet and exercise from distance running and triathlons, my body chemistry had actually changed (while training I stuck very strictly to small meals, balanced diet).
So yeah, everyone's body is pretty damn flexible in terms of specialization. I know I won't ever be a sprinter or some Kenyan marathon winner, but you can absolutely remold your body composition for different pursuits within the span of a year.
