My theory: he got catfished by Ronaiah (who is probably gay), made up a bunch of lies about it, to his dad and others because 1) would you admit to having an online-only relationship where youve never seen or met the chick? and 2) he realized the wildly embellished story played well in the media. Didn't find out about the hoax until later in the season, kept up the lies to try and save face. While he still thought he was dating this "girl", he actually met ronaiah and became bros with him, thinking it'd bring him closer to finally meeting his chick. Dad went along with the story Manti told him because media ate it up.

Ronaiah actually has a cousin named Lennay who looks similar to the mystery Facebook pic girl who met the Cardinals player. Maybe Lennay is a popular Polyneisan name.

Given the football culture and the LDS attitudes toward gays, it's plausible that he made it up as a cover for turning down an abundant supply of sweet ass. No one gets duped like this for 3 years. Even if he is that stupid, he has enough friends, family coaches, and teammates that someone would have caught wind that a foul plot was afoot.

While I agree with you I think its more plausible that it began as a hoax that steamrolled out of control. It had gone too far by the time he found out it was fake and lied to cover up his embarrassment. I just can't wrap my head around the idea that this girl and Tuosisopo were willing to sacrafice this much time and effort over YEARS just for a stupid prank essentially. No woman would be willing to spend that much time without some self-serving interest.

Plus there are too many stories that don't add up...Different death dates, supposed trips to Hawaii, the fact that she just all the sudden dies one day and he's like "oh well, she didn't call today so I guess she died last night"???
