^So if I was aware of someone that had been raped by someone close to her, it's her fault for [being too afraid, not wanting to have the rapist arrested, being too mentally unstable], and not mine for failing to do the right thing as the rational adult? Gotcha.

Clearly women are at fault for allowing rapists to be loose on the streets.

What is there to see? She went to the school, they held a mockery of a trial, and at no point did anyone take this to the police.

What is there to be afraid of? she's all but spelled out his name and been as public about it as anyone will let her? She has the mental stability to bring on a media circus around herself, I think she could handle a courtroom. And why would someone who has suffered something so painful and terrible want to let the criminal who did it go free to do it to someone else? They aren't family, they don't have children together, what possible reason could she have for not reporting him to the police?

Also you keep trying to generalize this to all rapes, that's definately not what we are talking about. There are some rapes where women are ACTUALLY scared of their attacker, or don't want to put their father or the father of their children in prison, this isn't one of those. Her case makes a mockery of these actual occurances where women are actually raped and actually can't go to the police for a legitimate reason.

We'll see if things actually went down as she paints it where she frantically goes to school officals with the tale of a violent rape and they try to hush her up and brush it through a student court. I have my doubts that is what happened.

I'll agree that this is a VERY unique case of rape. But where I think we differ is I don't think she's the one making the mockery of the case. She has done nothing but try to draw public awareness to UNC's complete and utter failure at handling sexual assault crimes. If she made a mockery of anything, its the student judicial system that promised her and her ex that justice will be served.

We can only say now that she should have gone to the police because we can see in hindsight what a horrible system UNC had. But at the time she had enough assurance to think that she would receive justice through that system. Her ex had enough assurance to continue through the process instead of asking to move the whole charade into an actual courtroom, where he could be defended by an actual lawyer and have real evidence brought against him.

And while we can agree that her case is unique in particular because of her media attention, if you read the DTH article you'll see that the school ushered other women through the same process, with similar outcomes. They just don't want to talk about it publicly.

If she is a victim of rape, I think what she's doing takes guts, because after going through the trauma of rape and an abusive relationship and the reliving of it through the jesters court of UNC's Honor Court, she now gets to relive that during every interview in addition to the general onslaught of the dregs of humanity who are without a doubt trolling her everywhere she goes.

I agree, what I'm pointing out is that she has not drawn awareness THAT SHE WAS RAPED AND THAT SOMEONE WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THAT.

SHE STILL CAN.

The student government can achieve justice for rape? Don't be ridiculous. I don't think anyone would tell her that.

And she loves it. She loves being the victim. The victim of a crime that never happened. She's doing everything she can to pretend that she was a victim without actually doing anything that would get her in trouble for false accusations or slander all while ruining the life of an innocent young man and making a mockery of actual rapes.

Okay, so there's disagreeing with a trial system because it was mismanaged... and then there's disagreeing because you didn't like the outcome.

The mind-blowing thing is that the outcome would have been less favorable to her if she had gone to a real court. The guy probably wouldn't have been ousted from the university, even temporarily. If anyone has grounds to complain about what the university did it's him.

So what exactly are her complaints against how the university handled the trial? I see the victim blaming argument, and then I see the argument that they kept her from going to the police. But they only kept her from going to the police for maybe 1 month out of the year since she's been broken up with him.

I find it much worse that the sent the ex to a therapist to wrest false confessions out of him. That is so over the top, but again, it was in Gambill's favor.

So, I made a snide comment to a few UNC ladies who consider themselves raging feminists.

They looked at me like I was the worst person in the world. Apparently the feminist cause doesn't mean shit when you're talking bad about their beloved university.

"But Gambill’s ex-boyfriend, whom she has publicly accused of rape, said the process was equitable.

He was found not guilty of two counts of sexual misconduct but guilty of verbal harassment in Spring 2012 by a University Hearings Board.

“None of the questions in the trial were out of place,” he said in a previous interview, adding that he and Gambill were asked equally probing questions.

“Both counsels have the opportunity to object to an unfair question,” he added.

He said the time distribution of the trial favored Gambill, who was questioned for an hour and a half. By contrast, he said, he was questioned for three hours."

Apparently, people don't appreciate uninvited, snide comments?

yeah, snide has connotations that you were rude or mocking, not sure why you'd be surprised they were taken aback

while I admittedly haven't followed this case closely, it does make me think of a story that was shown on 60 Minutes this past week:

The school is not even trying to get its 1.5 million back and Wanneta Gibson is not in prison. They're not even going to prosecute that lying piece of shit.

the other day, a co-worker told me my privilege blinded me to it

If I am ever a crime victim, especially of a physical crime I will report the crime to the local POLICE.

Not the fucking STUDENT CONDUCT OFFICE.

^^Ask for evidence. All claims must be supported by evidence. Don't let anyone just throw out 'privilege' as an excuse to end the conversation.

^Watch it, you're shaming the victim here. Surely there was an actual crime, she just was compelled to not report it at all.

I am not shaming her, I am calling her a liar.

If you are a victim of a crime and decide not to press charges, you are no longer a victim. That means you do not care if it happens to anyone else and are not willing to inconvenience yourself to punish the offender.

The whole thing sounds like a load of shit. She did not want to mess with prosecuting him, but wanted to humiliate him around school so she found a way she thought had less liability against her for making false statements.

I was being sarcastic. I thought Surely would have given it away but we need a font for sarcasm or something.
