Very emotional to watch that. The only thing that would make that story more awesome is if 30 years later we make another miracle run and win it.

That was amazing. Loved it.

I was dying laughing at Whit saying Terry Gannon would've shit his pants. And Terry Gannon's story on the charge call on Clyde Drexler was funny too.

Great film, incredibly inspiring. Hard not to get choked up watching that.

if our team can't watch that and come out with 110% from every player, every game and a deep runor a surprise championship, we should just hang it up and stop trying

^ Doesn't matter if we make a deep run or not, as long as we play with some heart and leave everything on the court. Howell does it every game, others need to follow that.

Little known fact about the 1983 Championship game. Phi Slamma Jamma had a total of 1 dunk in the game. State had 2; the first and last points in the game.

Re: state 30 for 30 (Sunday @ 9)

Anything told about that team is fantasy garbage. That team was highly regarded before the season started. Their record was due to Wittenberg's early season injury. Houston committed a massive choke to lose. Second only to Georgetown's 1985 choke. I actually agreed to watch the game with State fans because I knew they should have had no chance. Valvano was a greasy slimy crook. Sorry he is dead. No one deserves that. But he was a great coach about as much as any guy on the street was. They ran him out if town but because they have sucked since and he's dead, they revere him."

stay classy, UNCCH fan!

niiice. i kept thinkin about this while watching tonight. it would be perfect if we had a home white version of those Jimmy V Classic uniforms. Maybe next year we can go back to these on a permanent basis, even down to the warm-ups with the old Tuffy on the left chest

I shed a few during his 10 year reunion speech (even though I've seen it a number of times), ESPECIALLY when Thurl picked him up and ESPECIALLY ESPECIALLY when he led the fight song

So they used the 3 point arc in ACC play but not tournament play?

Was confused on that...

Correct. The ACC tried the 3 point line and a 30-sec shot clock that ran with the exception of the last four minutes of a half or overtime. Non-conference games and the NCAA Tourney didn't have either.

i don't see anything wrong with that review. It's very objective and focuses more on the film's presentation, only downplaying the actual run for it's lack of big fairytale moments.

Should have titled it: "The Dereck Whittenburg Story"

Little too much Whitt in there...nothing shy or humble about that guy AT ALL. Probably the one guy we could have hired that would have fucked our program up worse than Sidney Lowe.

Good stuff nonetheless. I always get teary eyed during the 10-year anniversary and ESPY speeches...mainly the ESPY when you see him struggling to get on and off the stage and when he talks about tumors all over his body. If you've ever had someone close suffer from cancer, that shit hits right at home.

What could have been if we had never made him AD and let our program spiral out of control (and the cancer thing of course). ACC would have been EPIC with him still battling it out with K and Dean in the 90s...and K and Gary Williams after that.

Karma owes us BIG TIME.

I know that...just wish it hadn't been that way. Seemed a little too self-promotional, IMO.

Still not saying it was bad...just would have been perfect if there was a little less Whitt.

Thank god there was a lot of Thurl as well. Well-spoken, more humble guy who balanced out Whitt's over-the-topness.

Hard to believe there was a time with no shot-clock. Up with the ball with 3:30 minutes left with a team that likes to run? Just dribble out the clock!

Hard to tell with Sports Talk posters.

Look...I don't want to turn this into a "I hate Dereck, he ruined the 30 for 30" campaign, so this will be my last post on the subject.

First...he didn't make it a bad show. I just think it could have been one of the best 30 for 30s out there...but he took a little too much of the limelight and it turned into more of a "I'm Dereck Whittenburg and this run was just as much about me as it was Jimmy V." The guy has been out of basketball for a few years and if you don't think that he went to ESPN to do this story as more of a self-promotional thing...then you're giving him too much credit. If he was still a coach at Fordham, he could have cared less about doing this.

Yes...he's a little over the top...but I think he laid it on extra thick for this special. I've seen him talk in person and seen interview clips of him in the past, and he's never been this over the top.

In summation....really good special, I still like Whitt, but just could have used a little less of him last night.
