Here are the Director's Cup ranking for the past 4 years (they've only released the fall for 2012-2013) Note - Yow was hired in July 2010:

2009-2010: Fall - 85; Winter - 88; Final - 89 (last year under Fowler)
2010-2011: Fall - 52; Winter - 71; Final - 67 (Yow's first year)
2011-2012: Fall - 38; Winter - 41; Final - 37
2012-2013: Fall - 41

Hard to say where we'll end up b/c of spring sports. Not much to argue...we're much better off than we were before Yow in the non-revenue sports (hell we even got points in women's volley ball this year...). I think we're better off in FB and BB but that can be debated.

Years ago I remember thinking that the only way we could be ranked lower in the conference was if they added more teams.

In fact, State’s performances have been so inept in football and now basketball, the slogan has become a cruel joke that Wolfpackers everywhere have to hear when they go to work on yet another morning after yet another defeat. Wolfpackers are a thick skinned lot even in the best of times; it comes with living in the same neighborhood as Duke and UNC — universities that win conference and national championships in basketball on a regular basis. And soon, Duke may well become the second team from North Carolina to play for an ACC Title in football’s modern era of having a championship game. NC State, on the other hand, has never played in a BCS Bowl or for that matter one of the five big postseason games in its entire football history. This is our state, indeed. All that in mind, it’s time to quietly retire the slogan and put it on the scrapheap where it belongs. This is not our state, right now, it’s not even our town. Until we have something to talk about, maybe we should stick to “Wolfpack Unlimited.” At least that’s accurate — right now, the Wolfpack seems only capable of unlimited losing. "

Let's theorize as to why we always have major sport teams that vacillate between awful and the definition of mediocre. It's always a very solidly middling record (7-6, 8-5 or 20-12 or something like that, just under or at .500...or we're in last).

What's the institutional disadvantage that's lasted pretty much since 1992. Valvano curse.

Because we don't have good coaches. On a bell curve, we've gotten to coaches in the middle or the left side of the bell curve.

The middle of the bell curve is significantly less productive that the extreme. It's that way in any industry.
