the beginning is fucking boring

i'm over video games having an overly cinematic intro where you barely move for 20 mins. i like actually PLAYING a video game.

Yea all that scripted stuff took forever. Crawling around with some dude's ass in your face for 20 minutes... DIRECTED BY HIDEO KOJIMA. ASS MODEL BY HIDEO KOJIMA.

The actual game is pretty cool though... does it ever leave afghanistan though? Open world is cool but it all looks exactly the same everywhere and is pretty dull.

You go to Africa after 12 story missions.

You can also still go back and forth between Africa and Afghanistan

It's fun but, about 6 chapters in, it hasn't hooked me in a way that makes me think Game Of The Year. It feels like a sandbox game with strong mechanics but poor / lacking story and very repetitive. microtransactions, credits after each chapter, and a real disconnect in tone between the intro and the main game further hold it back IMO.

I agree. Adding an "open world" element to MGS sounds cool but I have scouted/scanned/shot the exact same guard outpost with 4 guards and a spot light about 50 times in different locations. It gets very repetitive, and in a bleak/empty Afghanistan/Jungle the visuals aren't anything too impressive (after playing the Witcher3 at least).

I like the idea of customizing a base/crew, I still haven't dived deep into it yet. Base upgrading seems 100% linear. The only point of going there so far seems to be progressing the main story with a cut scene or two.

I haven't seen anything with the story so far, progress is much slower than the only other metal gear game (mgs3) I played, fewer boss fights also. Maybe in response to complaints that MGS4 had too many cutscenes idk.

I don't know why these games get slobber-knobbed so much. My review of these games is the same as for the Resident Evil series-The controls suck, camera is akward, and story is a nonsensical mish mash of different cliché genre tropes.

Hideo kojima is a douche.

I e been trying to understand the critic score myself. The only other game I've played much this year is Arkham Knight and I put it light years ahead of this game. Shame they spend all this money on Kiefer Sutherland and he can't say more than 3 words at a time in cutscenes. It's like they had to pay by the word and didn't realize his going rate until he was already in the studio. They might as well have just bought the rights to an episode of 24 and stolen Jack Bauer lines. That, and this open world is the biggest map with the least amount of shit to do in it ever. I've played and beaten all the MG games except for Peace Walker but I think I'm putting this one down for good about 8 hours in.

All these "missions" remind me of when I was playing Skyrim after beating the main quests. The game will have these "dynamic quests" that auto-generate. Like for the Dark Brotherhood, endless missions that are generated to give you something to do. Go here in open world, find X, Kill X, return for a prize and another identical quest.

I feel like MGS can have an open world but needs more scripted dialogue/story/characters and less of these filler missions, so far it seems like less than half actually effect the story (which also seems lackluster for MGS).

after having this game since launch ill say a few things
1) game is fun... BUT
2)the kojima shit is annoying as hell
3)david hayter sounded much better as both snakes
4) story is out there, but could be worse. still a fun game.

I agree with the statement that arkham knight was a better game. But I'm such a MGS fan that I'm cutting this game a lot of breaks.

So apparently some of the missions are just repeats of the same levels on a higher difficulty... and the story progresses with sidequests and missions (so whats the difference between the 2?)

Not sure if I want to pick this up anymore. Quiet is ridiculous looking enough to make me wary.

Pretty funny stuff.

So this game was actually unfinished? Chapter 3 removed? You have to play repeats of old missions to progress the story?

I'm not gonna pretend like this game is perfect, if you think that's what 10/10 should mean, but it is a freaking awesome game.

I don't know if I'd give it a 10/10 but IMO the only competition for GOTY so far are Witcher 3, Batman, and this.

It is a valid criticism though, essentially they ran out of money making the game, and scraped a lot of stuff. That isn't mentioned in the reviews (obviously).

I'm a huge fan of the mechanics and gameplay, but that's why it sucks it wasn't completed, lots of wasted potential.

Still prob GOTY.

OK I picked this up and the gameplay is indeed fucking badass. The first time I blew shit up with the rocket launcher I laughed like a little boy. I sent 3 mother fuckers flying 20 feet into the air. Someone finally made a rocket launcher feel like a rocket launcher in a videogame. Sniping people on horseback is also great fun.

They spent $80 million developing the game, with a brand new Fox engine. The fundamentals and mechanics are very well done and polished.

Just kinda sucks they... you know, ran out of money half-way through and scraped out the entire 3rd chapter and sold an unfinished game. It had potential to be one of the best.

Metal Gear Online is out now, anyone tried it yet?

I played a few matches so far. I'm not very good at console competitive shooters, my controller skills are garbage (when I tried the Halo beta I could barely manage a 0.5 k/d. much better with keyboard and mouse), but I've done ok so far at this.

Chose enforcer which nobody else seemed to pick, but the survivability really seems to be a big factor. I kill other people in 2-3 hits it seems like but I can generally take a burst of fire and survive. The best camouflage is cover anyway which enforcers can do as well as anyone.

Just started the MGS HD collection on the xbox. These controls are so clunky. Does it get better from game to game?

I've heard great things about this series, but I don't want to play it through if I'm going to be constantly frustrated with the controls.

No, if I were you I'd just get the new one. The controls have been completely modernized. And if you really care to see how batshit the story is then watch this nerd's videos.

Yea the controls are only "normal" for MGS 5, every other one they shit. Usually after an hour or so you get used to it, but even something as simple as moving and aiming down the sights of your gun is really cumbersome.

MGS3 was fun, Peacewalker not so much imo.

Also LOL at MGS5 getting all these great reviews. In what other industry can you do 66% of the work and be hailed as a great success? I am gonna shit my brains out if this game gets GOTY. It is fun and had potential but so blatantly unfinished. IGN 10/10

I may just pass on MGS HD if it's not crucial to mgs5. I made it to the first boss last night on MGS2 but had to restart the game at a lower difficulty setting before I beat her (Oleg, I think?). Note I'm about to go photograph the metal gear.

I just finished stick of truth (great game btw, if you've ever enjoyed a south park episode you need to play this game) and was looking at MGS HD, Witcher 2, or Mass Effect 2. I figured if I finished MGS HD I could finally retire my xbox 360.

Finished MGS2 last night. Holy shit the plot is convoluted as fuck. Should have listened to everyone who said to skip on previous installments. Played a bit of snake eater last night - being able to rotate the camera makes a huge difference. Still frustrated that I need to hold both shoulder buttons + press a face button to shoot the AK47.

It's frustrating that the game is unfinished but I'll let it slide since the core gameplay is so good. It's more important to me that a game is fun to play than anything else. Most open world games care first about a huge ass map to explore and make you sludge through some shit combat system (V.A.T.S.). I'm still replaying each mission to get an S and trying to upgrade my gear. D-Dog is one of the best A.I. partners ever. Now I want a pet wolf, I mean dog.

So Snake Eater was so much better compared to MGS2. Smother controls, plot was relatively cohesive, and more interesting game mechanics.

Currently a couple of hours in Peace Walker... how does building mother base in MGSV differ from building in PW?

I've read there's a lot of grinding required to fully finish this game by replaying missions to capture the same S track soldiers. Is there any truth to this? If so, I'm probably going to Wikipedia the end.

Nah. I'm done with PW. Game mechanics are solid, I just don't like replaying missions, which is required in PW to upgrade my weapons. At least MGSV offers multiple solutions to stealthing a mission outside of tranquilizers and CQC.
