To be fair it does matter where this house is located. As was mentioned earlier you cant really have a house that is dramatically different looking than others in the area.
Especially if this is a McMansion surrounded by other McMansions or if its located in Cary or something. They could have literally been told what cladding/color to use.
Or given like, 3 to choose from. I imagine the vinyl is temporary in any case. Probably just building up more bank. 8/13/2013 8:31:54 AM |

Since when does this house meet the description of a "McMansion"? 8/13/2013 9:27:04 AM |

Quote : | "In American suburban communities, McMansion is a pejorative for a type of large, new luxury house which is judged to be oversized for the parcel or incongruous for its neighborhood. Alternatively, a McMansion can be a large, new house in a sub-division of similarly large houses, which all seem mass produced and lacking distinguishing characteristics, as well as at variance with the traditional local architecture." |
Ill give it the fact it was custom designed/engineered, but the way it looks NOW (thanks to the vinyl) seems to make it fit the description perfectly (especially not knowing exactly where its located).8/13/2013 9:30:45 AM |

^^It still seems more like a very large, practical house with some nice considerations than a McMansion.

I don't think a McMansion would have vinyl siding. 8/13/2013 1:53:34 PM |

I don't like vinyl siding either (our [first] house has it for various reasons but I hate it); however, there are lots of crappily-designed or engineered houses out there with brick or stone veneer as well. He has taken the time to have a lot of other things well-engineered and designed in that house.
Just like there are lots of kitchens with poor-quality cabinetry or poor layouts, but granite or quartz etc.
Having the whole pie would be good, but most people have budget constraints and it sounds like for them that having the extra space was more important than having a nicer siding. Everyone will fall on different sides of that choice (I'd personally go smaller lot and smaller house with the ability to top out all the finishes), but it's not the end of the world given everything else they have done.

That's pretty much what makes it a McMansion. Huge monstrosity of a home that's poorly built, with plastic siding to boot.
No judging, just being descriptive.8/13/2013 3:55:34 PM |

that's the thing though. I agree it is pretty large and it has vinyl siding, but from what I have seen so far, it is far from poorly built. Not the best of the best, but certainly above average construction in most of the subdivisions people would consider "mcmansions"

It reminds me of when someone drops 22s or some oversized wheels on a Lexus, but then doesn't cough up the money to lower it properly. Tacky is probably a better word than anything. 8/13/2013 4:03:22 PM |

yeah, the reason i'd love to have 10 (or more) acres isn't so I can play fucking safari every time I go outside. it's so I have enough space to do anything I want, and don't have to bother with neighbors.
i, too, would want a shooting range (1000 yards) and an airstrip, and in a perfect world, some waterfront. That shit takes a lot of space. 8/14/2013 3:58:40 PM |
NeuseRvrRat hello Mr. NSA! 35376 Posts user info edit post |
you better find a whole lot more than 10 acres. a 10 acre rectangle that is 1000 yards on one side would be less than 50 yards on the other side. 8/14/2013 4:06:38 PM |

Meh. It doesn't say where he's doing vinyl flooring and it lists that he has hardwood flooring and tile work going on too. Maybe the vinyl is just for the laundry room or something in his massive basement. You make it out like he's putting it in the kitchen.8/16/2013 3:55:16 PM |

doesn't make much sense in a laundry room, either--such small square footage isn't very expensive to do the right way.
a basement might make sense. 8/16/2013 8:13:55 PM |
