I realize this thread is about how you can't get a girl....which I do not dispute. Hear me out, maybe I can offer some insight.
I am in outside sales, which is currently salary+commission, but will move into straight commission starting at the beginning of July 2010. I have been in this position since July 2009. I have competition from several direct manufacturing sales reps, large distributors, and local distributors. Here are the advantages and disadvantages of each:
Direct Advantages: Immediate knowledge of new technology, no middle man mark up, one shipping bill (paid by manufacturer or buyer of goods), access to larger range of non-commodity items, control inventory, have access to many distributors that can effectively sell their goods which increases market share, and set prices of commodity they manufacture.
Direct disadvantages: Typically have 1-3 sales reps per region (i.e. southeast, mid-atlantic, northeast, etc.) limiting the number of accounts they can successfully manage/cold-call, lack physical customer service or physical technical service available to or affordable for smaller users or altogether, are sometimes not trustworthy because they will go in behind their distributors that sell their commodity to one account in large quantities (i.e. they missed a big account, and have found out about it through a distributor selling their particular product) which leads to the distributor not selling their product anymore, have too many distributors selling the product ultimately driving the set price down through deviations, possibly rely on distributors to actually sell the product, and competition from other direct sources.
Large distributor advantages: have access to other commodities that go hand in hand with other manufacturers (poor example- grocery stores sell milk as well as cereal), get direct pricing, many locations regionally or nationally easing the shipping burden of buyers with multiple locations, personal service either customer or technical, many sales reps that are able to cover a broader territory, access to multiple manufacturers of the same commodity allowing to keep prices in check, service programs that smaller companies can't offer and direct providers can't match in price or value, and experts of many many commodities as opposed to one or a few.
Large distributor disadvantages: smaller local distributors creating price wars (think Michael Scott Paper Co vs Dunder-Mifflin), direct mfg's going in behind and stealing business, limited access to all of the mfg's (you won't find Harris Teeter name brands in Food Lion and visa versa), can't truly set prices because it's based on both supply and demand, territory management, and tough growth prospects in slower economies (this is true for direct as well really)
Local distributor advantages: Typically a good ol' boy setting where the seller and the buyer know each other for years (this does happen at all levels, but mostly at the local level), local folks are right down the street and can be used in emergencies, if the local guy buys at high enough volumes then there is no shipping charge to the end user, and access to both direct mfg's and large distributors.
Local distributor disadvantages: easily beaten in price, array of commodities, array of technology, lack of trained staff, low cash flow, etc etc etc.
This is what I have noticed in my six months, I am sure there are plenty more that need mentioning. The way I am setting myself apart as a sales person is this: I go after the big accounts right now while I am new. The big accounts, if I land them, will take care of me while I am new and building a customer base. The money made off of those allows me to focus free time on smaller accounts that get me higher margins. I build up big accounts, I would like to have 5-10 of these, then get 20-30 medium accounts. If I lose 1 or 2 big accounts, the 20-30 medium accounts keep me afloat while I go after new big accounts. I don't really waste time on small accounts simply because they basically pay for breakfast or something really small.
I will say this, if you can't get a big account in the first 6-8 months (assuming you have cash flow that you can ride this long) you could be in a world of trouble. If you can get one, it will really make going after the others a lot more enjoyable and less stressful. It's simply just very exhausting wasting any time on anything other than big accounts in the very beginning. You work just as hard on the medium sized accounts and see 1/3 to 1/36 of the money in my situation.
If you have any other questions, you can PM me. I hope this helps in the slightest! 9/14/2013 10:24:00 PM |

steve madden? ecco? WTF guise?! I thought we were talking about shoes to wear with shorts?! lemme break it down for you. here's an outline man shoes (if you live in the south):
-rainbows (not a shitty knock off) -sperrys (not a shitty knock off) -gym shoes (that you actually wear to the gym - take care of yo shit and work the fuck out) -NB 993 (because you need the extra height - do not wear these to the gym and get them all sweaty and stinky and scuffed to hell) -dress shoe for work (steve maddens can be acceptable if you're a chump on a budget, but there are better options like cole haan loafers) -dressier shoe for special occasions

What you probably think I'm thinking: OMG he has money and will spend it on meeeeeee! Imma suck him dry then suck his wallet dry!!!!
What I think: Those shoes are a classic style that will last a long time. He makes smart decisions and has style. He's relationship material.
Notice what I was talking about in my original comment was shoes. "More expensive means better" doesn't hold true for everything - household goods, some groceries, t-shirts, underwear, etc. I'm advising that guys (who are single and looking for a gf) invest in a few quality items that will last and look good while being functional. You want to attract ladies? This is how.
If a graphic tee with a witty saying on it is your thing, and you want to attract the associated females who are in to that, that's fine. This is not your thread.

I don't think you're shallow, but your posts to this thread have come off as shallow. You talked about height, stereotyped women by the sports they play and whether or not you find them in bars, and wrote a lot about clothes.
So far, your advice has been that he's too short to wear flip flops and Steve Madden shoes are only acceptable if he's a "chump on a budget."
I'm just sayin. 9/15/2013 12:52:31 AM |

I have worn black, low top Dr Martens for at least the last 15 years. Summer and winter. I have like a dozen pairs that I never throw away for some reason. I am married with two boys, but I never seemed to have much trouble getting women back before I met my wife. Having been out of the game for a while I have no suggestions for picking up chicks, however, I strongly recommend this footwear.

I have found that being direct and assertive with girls works wonders. Don't be afraid to start a conversation with them, and when and if you do, try to have some swag: Make a girl laugh, complement her, and try to engage her on a personal level without being obvious about it. Girls love connecting with guys, and a lot of them will totally fall for the trap of telling them your secrets and desires without knowing it.
Most of all, it just takes a lot of practice to develop the ability to talk to and engage women. So, go out and practice. I think that going to a bar scene or night life is great for this, but just think twice before buying them a bunch of drinks and don't expect anything out of it. 9/15/2013 11:51:41 AM |

Sneakers with a collared shirt? Really? That's a mismatch right there.
Anyway, as others have said, be yourself, or be prepared to fake it for the rest of your life, unless of course, you end up having a makeover and become a new you by adopting a new fashion sense which becomes you. 9/15/2013 12:22:14 PM |

My very stuck up elitist fashion opinion Don't wear shorts. 50 years ago men wore suits all day everyday. If you're going somewhere where there are other people and you're going to socialize, you should probably wear pants. Also no low tops, low top dress shoes are like short sleeve button ups. Wear boots.
This is not opinion, wear clothes that fit. Nothing baggy. Baggy looks sloppy. Spend a legitimate amount of time finding a brand that fits you well and looks good on you. Take someone female to help you. You only really have to do this once to get a core outfit then buy variations of that outfit.

on the real, just be yourself and go meet people.
I met my wife at skeeball. Want to know one of the first things I said to her? "Holy shit what in the hell is wrong with your elbow?" Her and her friend (who practice yoga), were comparing how their elbows hyperextend.
Want to know my first compliment to her? "Hey your head looks different." Another friend of hers, who is a militant feminist, was sitting next me and asked what I meant. I told her that I meant that I noticed she had straightened her hair and it looked good.
While my words weren't smooth, I was myself, and after a few dates she liked that I was not a fake douchebag. 2 years later we got married.
AND BOOM GOES THE DYNAMITE.
(and yes I had PTSD, and no I've never been abusive). 9/15/2013 1:08:27 PM |
