Democrats are in favor of everyone having the ability to vote. On almost every connected issue, the Democratic position is to make it easier to cast a ballot.
While some individuals who identify as Democrat or progressive might feel uncomfortable about the idea of dumb people voting, I can't think of anything about the Democratic party IRL that aligns with that. I can't even think of a widespread shared view among the Democrats that connects with that." |

Is there a term for a strawman contained within a strawman? Double strawman? Strawception?
Democrats are absolutely not in favor of everyone having the ability to vote. I don't see many Democrats trying to eliminate the voting restriction on felons, for instance. Many of these "felons" were actually peaceful people contributing to society until the state put them into a cage for growing plants or whatever.
In any case, I wasn't initially making any claims about which party wants to restrict voting. The Republicans are obviously the ones spearheading the latest effort. I was responding to the assertion that Republicans should "want everybody to vote", when that is exactly the opposite of what any political party wants.
The Democratic party happens to be against voter ID laws, but it has nothing to do with actually wanting all people to vote. It's just a demographics game. Republicans are for voter ID laws because they've crunched the numbers and determined that it works in their favor electorally. Democrats are against voter ID laws because it does not work in their favor electorally. None of these positions are based on morality or principles of any kind.
Again, no one wants democracy. People want particular outcomes. People want democracy when they believe that they're on the winning side. People want something else when they're on the losing side.

Talk is cheap, especially if it came from Senator Obama.
Can't fault Democrats if they actually want to pursue removing the restriction on felon voting, though.

Half of that first statement is true.
The other half of the first and the second are completely ignorant. Show me your data.

digging yourself deeper in the hole you're in. dig dig dig
Your hatred of Democracy won't be directly refuted because our social contract is based on the idea that it's the best system we have. Is there any other political system you would like to lavish in praise as your suggested alternative?
Such unqualified bashing of Democracy is... well, undemocratic. It's hard to be more politically wrongheaded than this. But you could do worse, by pinning your electoral failures on the flaws of Democracy, which obviously favor the other party.
Republicans want tyranny. Is there any wonder they're headed for obsolescence?

Sure, he wants the same government that fantasy Libertarianland has. It functions ideally. A no tax paradise where no one treads on anyone!3/19/2014 1:30:39 PM |
