OK, everybody, calm down, the expert is here. Now, first things first: you're definitely all going to die. I'd go ahead and liquidate all your assets now so that you can enjoy what precious time you have left. I've heard good things about heroin. Try that.
And no, mosquitoes do not spread ebola. It does not survive very well outside of the human body, though it could be transmitted through needle sticks. Generally, though, you have to come in direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected and symptomatic person. 10/1/2014 4:50:41 AM |

I know I'm perfectly safe.... But it is weird knowing that I live about a mile away from the NIH where they are treating Ebola patient. And the same subway line is connecting the NIH and my crib, separated by like 1 stop.
If I catch anything, I'm going to go cough on ↑

You can so craft evil charms from stolen poo. I put a voodoo spell on dtownral the other day using similar methods.
On an unrelated note, I think that enterovirus d68 is going to be a larger public concern for parents of small children and teens with asthma. In about 10 cases so far, it has exhibited symptoms similar to polio, with lower extremity paralysis. 10/1/2014 7:14:20 PM |

Yes to sweat and spit, I'm not sure on snot but I would assume so. Also not sure on how much or how long, although I've heard that generally a very small introduction of the virus is enough. What the CDC keeps telling us is "direct contact." Meaning that if someone sweats on a door handle and you touch the door handle, you're fine, but if you put your mouth or an open wound onto a sweaty person you can get it. And, again, any of these fluids is only a risk if the person has symptoms.
Oddly it remains in semen for a long time after a person gets better, several weeks at least.
Smath made me smile with that picture.

I know it's the wolfweb but I don't like the implication that Africans are stupid. Crafting evil charms from poop is silly. Believing that a person has to ritualistically cannibalize a Jewish zombie or they will be on fire forever is pretty silly, too, but a lot of Americans believe that.
The problem isn't stupid vs. smart. People here are unwilling to leave their sick relatives to die, so they care for them, and in the process they get sick. Americans would be the same way, but fortunately we have decent medical facilities that have earned our trust, so we don't have to provide the care ourselves. We also have a government that isn't actively trying to fuck things up, which in itself isn't stupid, either -- having a fucked up country gets you free money from Europe and the US better than anything else.10/2/2014 4:34:23 AM |

A lot of Americans, including this one. The point being that we can't judge a society by quirks of its religious beliefs, since all societies have them and all of them, upon close inspection, have some serious quirks. If aliens landed, they would not think Beninese beliefs were all that remarkable. 10/2/2014 10:33:08 AM |

Isn't it possible that people who want to do this country harm - meaning those that would give their life to be a martyr, might somehow obtain the means to infect themselves and then make their way here?
Kind of a stretch, but all it would take would be one person with a lot of will, and once they got here, it wouldn't be hard to infect people if they were trying to do it on purpose. 10/2/2014 7:33:25 PM |

Considering You can get it from brief direct contact with spit and sweat, initial symptoms just seem like a flu, the primary response is to be quarantined to see if you die, and a million cases are predicted by January, I don't see the rationale for reports that there's nothing to worry about.
I foresee some Americans being afraid of government quarantine and either hiding, or being in denial about having it. They may not even come forward if they've been in contact with this guy. I guess we'll know in about 20 days if anyone get infected.
But who's the next carrier, or the next, to land on American soil with it. 10/2/2014 8:55:14 PM |

It's practically guaranteed though that until this gets under control in Africa, there is going to be another case here in the United States, and other first world countries.

I think it's childish to not worry a little.
Here in America we're fat dumb and happy. That happiness hangs on by a thread though. One small interruption to peoples' way of life and they'll be fat, dumb, but not so happy, and trouble could ensue.
Sure SARS and swine flu turned out to be a flop compared to the hype, but I'm sure Americans in the turn of the 20th century thought that particular flu wasn't going to be too bad in its earlier stages. Until everybody died. 10/2/2014 9:30:26 PM |

This article is a month out of date already, and their goal was to downplay Ebola, but if you use updated infection numbers and compare Ebolas death rate, it seem's we should be worrying more than we are lead to believe. Swine flu killed thousands of people, mostly the elderly.
Ebola is much less infectious (supposedly) but has a much higher death rate. If past flus are a guide, we could be looking at hundreds or thousands of deaths. 10/2/2014 9:39:53 PM |

The Country Director here was telling us that the Dallas guy showed up at the hospital, told them he'd just come back from Liberia, and was sent home. Don't know if it's true or not, but damn.
I know a few volunteers who have gone back home recently, and when any of them goes to the doctor for anything, they just mention that they were in West Africa and they get moved to the front of the line. So most places act out of an abundance of caution, but maybe not Texas.
I wouldn't be surprised if this guy had infected another person. I would be surprised if it were more than one. And there are probably going to be a couple more people who got it in Africa and who will start showing symptoms in America.
Quote : | "I foresee some Americans being afraid of government quarantine and either hiding, or being in denial about having it. They may not even come forward if they've been in contact with this guy." |
I could see someone hiding from quarantine, but hiding isn't conducive to spreading it. Even if you don't want to go to the hospital, you don't want to infect other people, either. And again, symptomatic ebola is not something you'd usually try to "muscle through" and go about your business with.
Quote : | "Kind of a stretch, but all it would take would be one person with a lot of will, and once they got here, it wouldn't be hard to infect people if they were trying to do it on purpose." |
It would be extremely hard. I suspect that one reason it never occurred to terrorists to use HIV is that it's actually kind of difficult to force your bodily fluids into somebody. This isn't something where a guy can spit in your food or sweat on the gym equipment and you get sick. It dies fast outside the body. Also, a person who is profusely sweating and vomiting, and possibly bleeding, is not a person who can move around under the radar.10/3/2014 4:55:06 AM |

So he did go to the hospital and was given antibiotics ( practically a placebo) then 2 days later got more ill which is when they took him seriously. He was symptomatic for 2 days, crammed in an apartment with 4 other people.
It would be interesting if the reason he was turned away was insurance. It would be an indictment of ACA in that it didn't go far enough... 10/3/2014 11:24:40 AM |

if the reports are right (that he was given antibiotics for a suspected cold virus), someone needs to go talk to that doctor that's another entirely separate problem.
