Aidy Bryant is not very funny.
She has a schtick that is funny like one out of five times. So while she has a few moments...they are few and far between....although I guess you could say that about most SNL cast members for the past 5 or so years. 9/29/2014 3:07:27 PM |

Looking forward to tonight's show. Too lazy to look at the guide to see who the host and musical guest are, but looking forward to some of you people claiming that the current cast members are just-as-funny/just-as-good as Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, etc
But now that i look, Sarah Silverman could be good, she's pretty funny. And while I don't care for Maroon 5, they're talented, when they're not ripping off Finley Quaye.

I thoroughly enjoyed the opening monologue and the movie trailer
then I fell asleep after the Joan Rivers roast (which was decent, but Silverman was a little sloppy in her delivery)

current cast members are never as good as past ones. just as movies aren't as good these days as they used to be. and kids use to be so much politer to their elders. and you could actually pick-up hitchhikers without fear of being murdered. and houses just aren't built like they used to be.
but Dan Akroyd sucks, and always sucked. And I never found Steve Martin all that funny. But my dad thinks he and Gilda Radner were the best. REmember that funny skit where Steve Martin Walks Like and Egyptian? And he wishes they could make horror movies like wolfman and frankenstein in the 50s. 10/6/2014 3:06:07 PM |

people who always make an effort to complain about the current state of SNL tend to only put weight into the post-SNL career of previous cast members, not in their output while on the show, which is all you have to judge the current cast members
it's always been an uneven show. I'd be interested to know how much of the first 5 seasons people who reference them have actually watched (and not just the highlights, the entire episodes)
when it comes to SNL, Lorne Michaels has a pretty flawless record.

I just can't comprehend how some people can act like the current cast has anything on people like Chris Farley and Will Ferrell.
I was one of the people who was like "oh no, Ferrell isn't gonna be back next season". Not someone like "omg did you see this movie featuring this unknown actor named Will Ferrell? Wow he sure is funny in movies, wonder where he came from"

you and vinylbandit have pretty much said "it's always been great until last season"
and anyone who knocks the current cast either hasn't actually watched old shows, etc
why so defensive about SNL anyway? it's not as good as it used to be. why does that hurt your feelings or hinder your ability to enjoy it? 10/6/2014 4:25:26 PM |

it was a known transition year. there have always been transition years.
"SNL sucks now" is a lazy argument and has always been a lazy argument
simply saying "this cast (and writers) is still learning/getting better/gelling" does not equal "this cast is as good as the all-time greats", which is the argument you've been attempting to make, even though nobody has said that 10/6/2014 4:31:24 PM |

vinylbandit thinks 90% of the people who say the show is not as good as it used to be are wrong, and only say that because they don't watch every week
it's simply not as good nowadays as the Carvey/Myers/Nealon/Farley/Spade/Sandler/Hartman/Meadows/Rock/Schneider days. It just isn't.

I think some of the cast members are funny as individuals...I just don't think the skits are funny...which leads me to the writing being worse. I don't think there was one funny joke in the Joan Rivers skit. The vitamix one was abysmal. The weekend update was horrible. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with the "Supportive Women" tv show bit...holy fuck that was bad. I actually thought the Obama/60 minutes opening was decent. But they had a pretty solid comedian as the host and completely struck out.
Even if the episode as a whole was weak, you use to always be able to count on a couple very funny skits to make it worthwhile. I feel like that rarely happens now. 10/6/2014 6:14:53 PM |

Did you miss the part where Jost and Che discussed things that they aren't allowed to say? Holy shit.
Neither of these episodes have been "good," but they have moments. The pretapes this were all great this week, as well as the monologue. It bothered me a little that Sarah jumped back to a relatively old standup bit as part of the audience section, but I really loved the use of her segments from the '90s in the back half of it.

I thought it was pretty clear what they were doing with that skit, and it was humorous.
I liked SS's monologue, and yes she is looking good...she screwed up that Joan Rivers sketch bad tho. I liked Update well enough, Sharpton is always fun, but the feminist duo thing sucked imo. I liked Airport drive, especially Bobby in it. http://www.dropshots.com/emmaprice/date/2014-10-05/14:27:16 . Vitamix was hilarious, but I'm a biased audience as I enjoy making fun of those things and those people.

We obviously have different views on what's humorous. While that part wasn't as bad as the rest of the show, it's a played out joke...and those two aren't funny enough to take it to another level to overcome the fact that we've heard this skit/joke in a different form a million times already. Not the biggest fan of Jost or Che either. Che is starting to warm up on me a bit though. I think I came in with high expectations for him because I've heard people rave about him and that he has a hilarious stand-up (something I need to check out). Jost just fails to deliver (IMO of course).
I thought the SS opening/stand-up was "okay". It was going down a bad path, but she saved it a bit. Still thought they could have done more with her (did like the flashbacks of her in the audience). And she did fuck up the Joan Rivers skit...but the jokes weren't funny to begin with, so I don't think it would have mattered much.
Regardless...we just have different senses of humor.10/7/2014 6:41:22 AM |

You do know that you just have a different taste in comedy? Those skits aren't clever and don't involve critical thinking that only you and a few select individuals who must be extremely intelligent can understand. Or are you that dense? 10/7/2014 3:24:09 PM |

Not a bad episode. I enjoyed the San Diego public access show. Whoever made that and the After School Special in the season premiere needs to get air time each week. Not the same played out premise that's contributed to dwindling ratings, but something that's both creative and funny. Although I don't know how much mainstream appeal those particular sketches had. But mainstream appeal and good sketches don't necessarily have anything to do with each other.
