saying what you like is "good" beer and what other people like is shitty beer makes you a snob. (i'm not calling you a snob, just saying.)
but if you like miller lite, YOU HAVE SHITTY TASTE.

Had a friend post last night that she tried Angry Orchard and had fallen in love with it. As she lives in Roanoke Rapids, she has never experienced the joy of a bottle shop or bar with real varieties of drinks available. People were discussing which Food Lion carried which flavors. It was funny because she said she had grown up like most of the people in small towns to only know the differences between Bud/Miller/Coors.
Back there the beer snob drink was getting a Blue Moon or Sam Adams. I was also an ignorant SOB until we moved to Chapel Hill. Then I had all these styles available and actually began appreciating beer for what it could be, rather than settling for some cheap shit just to get drunk. I don't down people for their taste in beers, but I am always glad when somebody else sees what they have been missing and discovers something new they enjoy. 10/5/2014 1:58:54 PM |

Two faults with this logic.
1) People say (insert favorite AAL here) is "good" beer all the time and call IPAs shitty beer, does that make them a snob? No. Liking what you like is not considered snobbish, it's when you place judgement on other "people" notice I did not say on other "beers".
2) Your taste is subjective, like everyone elses. But there are objective measures for knowing what good beer is. Just any competition where there's judges, there are measures of what makes good beer, whether you "like" good beer or not doesn't matter, it doesn't mean the beer isn't good by those measures.
There's subjective "good" (what you like) and objective "good" (based on measures of quality)
What ends up happening is people mix the two and say they think all AAL's are bad, when in fact there are some really well brewed AAL's out there and good compared to the measures for what makes it a good beer of that particular style.

Not really. You could make a stronighsh objective case that such beers are "inferior" (by certain widely agreed standards) to other beers, but not that they are shitty in any objective sense. It just depends on how picky you want to be, and pickiness is subjective.
It's like schwag vs. dank. Is dank "better," in any objective sense, than schwag? Yes, of course it is. But does it follow that schwag is terrible? No.
(I feel compelled to stick up for these beers, as I've had many a happy night getting shit-faced off them, and still drink them from time to time.)]10/5/2014 2:32:26 PM |

i enjoy exactly 2 "shitty" (ie. cheap) beers: yuengling and PBR
actually, you might be able to throw corona in there, too, but it's not as cheap as the other two
even then, these beers are (usually) relegated to the summer when it's hot out, after mowing the lawn or while at the beach or whatever
i never really considered myself a snob, i just find that most "shitty" beers lack flavor and so i'd rather drink water than take in the extra calories 10/6/2014 8:30:48 AM |

This. And on the other side of the coin... don't think I'm a prick/asshole/etc. because I'm not going to drink your typical, american light lager or similar beer; I won't take one you offer; I won't let you buy me one. Call me a beer snob is fine, but that's about as far as you can take it. I straight up don't want your miller/bud/etc. light; I'd rather have water. Not being a dick to you, I don't drink what I don't enjoy.

no, it's not. that's one of the dumbest phrases out there in the food and beverage industry.
Would you say the same thing about food, one dish which was free, but that you detest? I didn't think so.

^^Yup. We go mostly for the tasting room to try new beers, and whenever they send out their weekly newsletter that lists something interesting on sale. 10/6/2014 1:51:08 PM |

synapse has had some quality threads recently. I live in Denver so I tend to drink a lot of beer. I'm a huge hoppy/ipa fan.
Odell brewery is probably my favorite new brewery. I'm a huge fan of Dry Dock as well. The larger ones here (New Belgium, Great Divide, Avery, Fort Collins, SKA, and Upslope are all delicious as well.
I haven't brewed my own beer (I've helped friends) and I can't distinguish each individual type of hop or ingredient in a beer (I can to an extent) but I tend to have the same opinion about beer as I do about food. If you can get it anywhere then what's the fun in trying it out? There's probably 5 craft breweries within a short walking distance of my apartment so why would you ever buy anything else? All the liquor stores (can't buy beer over 3.2% in a grocery store) are independent and have a great symbiotic relationship with the local craft breweries. It's great being able to walk into any corner liquor store and sometimes have 50+ craft beers to choose from. With how many are opening up on a monthly basis it's like beer Christmas every day of the year.
But yeah I'm a beer snob only in the sense that if you don't try new beer you're missing out. 10/6/2014 9:50:47 PM |

I'd love too! Truthfully we just moved here a year ago and we're always busy on the weekends doing something in the mountains. Also my girlfriend doesn't drink beer which makes it hard! I'm always up for something beer related though! 10/7/2014 11:44:03 PM |
