I wouldn't say I'm a hardcore A's fan, but I'm definitely not about to hop on the Giant's bandwagon and go trash the city in celebration tonight like what others did last time. I've lived through all three of their recent WS victories in the Bay Area and yet I still manage to survive and continue pulling for the A's. I think it's weak sauce to root for both teams though, but a lot Bay Area people do. Kinda like people who pull for UNC and State at the same time. 10/30/2014 12:39:26 AM |

i'm going to live here for like five years total, i don't have time to be a hater. this is the first time i've lived in a place w/ one baseball team, let alone two, and they've both been great. i just enjoy it.
to me, hardcore allegiances come from fighting about it in elementary school... i'm just not invested enough in the bay area to feel strongly about it.] 10/30/2014 12:53:12 AM |

root for whoever you want. rivalries are mostly rooted in emotion anyway, so why even try to bring logic into it? Most A's fans I know usually hate the Giants (for lots of reasons, but mostly the territorial rights thing), while a lot of Giants fans pull for the A's too, like last year when the Giants weren't even in the playoffs. The split cap is an actual thing though, and you'll see them whenever the A's/Giants play each other. Giants fans sometimes claim it's a one-sided rivalry, which sounds very pretentious and UNC-like to me. 10/30/2014 1:06:33 AM |

educate yourself:
http://www.athleticsnation.com/2012/4/18/2958535/territorial-rights-a-not-so-brief-history
tl;dr version:
Quote : | "A brief summation:
Why territorial rights? Oakland did SF a favor when they were trying to build a new stadium in the early 90’s and were considering the South Bay. Territorial rights were created in the hope that it would give the Giants the public votes to support a new South Bay ballpark. That didn't work out. Unfortunately, the territorial rights "favor" had financial value which was included in the price of the Giants franchise when the team was sold in 1992. The Magowan group bought the rights that were intended as a gift. Now the South Bay rights are a financial entity, and the Giants have actively worked to expand their Peninsula/South Bay fan base. There is real value in that, and the Giants have every reason to demand compensation if MLB revokes the territorial rights to the South Bay area. But there is a very strong moral argument that the A’s were originally under no obligation to give the rights to the Giants in the first place. So no-one’s fully in the right and it’s a mess. One would hope Bud Selig would work quickly to solve this mess and let everyone move on, but he’s instead waffled on the issue. This leaves the A’s unable to create a secure long-term plan and well, here we are." |

Such great fans. Oh wait, it' the Oakland/"bridge and tunnel" people that try to destroy the city every time they win a WS like Giants fans are claiming.

Close to 10 years. What difference does it make? The Giants fucked the A's over. What is so difficult for you to underatand? Do you not get that rivalries are based on petty, trivial shit? How is me hating the Giants any different than you hating UNC? 10/30/2014 4:57:11 PM |

my point is, they fucked over the a's organization... forcing them to stay in oakland! if you're an a's fan b/c you live in oakland, that's what you want. i would think anyway. i don't think that's trivial, either. a team actively trying to leave its city is a pretty big deal as far as being a fan of that team goes. 10/30/2014 5:04:58 PM |

I mean most A's fans would love a water front ballpark or one in downtown Oakland, but moving to Fremont or a downtown San Jose stadium would definitely be an upgraded experience over the worst venue in MLB. It's not like I'd stop being an A's fan if the stadium moved somewhere in the Bay Area. A's fans want a nice stadium and game day experience. Why wouldn't they? The team has 9 championships, tons of history, and they'd love nothing more to have something similar to what the Giants have. Look at the graph of attendance: before Pac-Bell park, the A's outdrew the Giants some years. Do 49ers fans shun the team now that it plays in Santa Clara, an hour + away? Raw fucking sewage leaks onto the field all the time at the O.co The fact that the A's are in limbo is a combination of terrible ownership, piss poor city management by the city of Oakland, and the fact that they did a Giants a favor by giving them territorial rights to keep them in the Bay Area. Couple that with the fact that the Giants have won three championships and gloated about it nonstop (which is 100% natural) makes them a team I just can't root for. Call it jealousy or whatever you want, but do you really think A's fans should be happy about their current situation AND pull for the team is somewhat responsible for their misery?
Again, look at the rabid hated of UNC by State fans. It really shouldn't be difficult for you to figure out why people feel the way they do about sports rivalries.

it's just difficult for me to figure out how someone introduced to the situation as a grown man feels that way. i also disagree about the level of gloating. whatever, go giants. 10/30/2014 5:19:20 PM |

So you're saying that holding a grudge against a team and not wanting to join the bandwagon isn't mature..? No shit. Welcome to the world of sports rivalries, man. I fail to see how you can appreciate what's happening to UNC because of rabid, hateful State fans, yet you can't imagine why A's fans, regardless of age, don't want the Giants to win. Whatever. Go A's. 10/30/2014 5:31:36 PM |

Like I said earlier, I'd want nothing more than the A's to stay and have an awesome new ballpark near Jack London square- I could walk over from my apartment and probably hear the crowd from my balcony! But failing that, San Jose wouldn't be a bad option, especially if they build it in downtown SJ near the planned BART stop. Trust me, The stAy thing mostly means staying in the Bay Area, but preferably in Oakland with a new stadium. Failing that, it's certainly better to have the A's play at O.co. There's a very real threat that the team would be shipped away to another city if Lew Wolff doesn't get his way though, and that would really suck
