Anyway, they just have potential to become the best team.

Well Duncan just passed Jerry West for 18th all time but it doesn't look like Kobe is gonna get it tonight (has 19, needs 11 more to tie).

Guess he'd rather do it @ Minnesota than at San Antonio...

Wait, are you seriously going to argue that NBA defenses of the mid 90s were not significantly better and more physical than what Kobe faced in the 00s?

Even if you are, just set that aside and realize that Kobe isn't as good as MJ was on offense. He was also a shitty defender whereas Jordan was a very good defender.

Kobe scored a ton of points and he's going to pass MJ and maybe even Kareem eventually, but he's not a better player than Jordan, not even close really.

Kobe has no chance in hell of ever passing Kareem. He will be lucky to pass Malone

^^Defenses were allowed to be more physical in Jordan's era, but there were a higher percentage of better athletes in the league during Kobe's playing time.

MJ is obviously better. But Kobe is arguably the 2nd best wing player of all time. face would probably say Kobe isn't a top 100 player of all time though.

^^Really? I think it's pretty much a lock that he passes Malone and a pretty decent chance he catches Kareem.

He's 4000 behind Karl and 6000 behind Kareem, at 20 ppg and 65 games per season that's only 3 more seasons to get to second and 5 more to get the record. If he averages 25 ppg it's a little under 4 years to break the record.

Bare minimum he plays out at least this contract, but more likely he's probably going to play until he's 40 now. I thought it unlikely that he ever regained even 75% of his old self following the Achilles injury, but now I think he'll probably keep on playing until he breaks the scoring record. He's never going to get another contract like the one the Lakers gave him but I can easily see him playing a couple more years with Phil in NY after this contract in the hopes of getting one more title or to grab more records.

This has been kind of an odd season so far, as evidenced by PER leaders:

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics

I know it's still early, but Brandan Wright and Marreese Speights?

Also, Anthony Davis is having one of the all-time great seasons (24ppg, 10rpg and 2 steals, 3 blocks per game) and his team still might miss the playoffs which is just a testament to how bad a job they've done constructing that roster.

More of a testament of how amazingly strong the Western conference is and how historically awful the East is.

Also back to Kobe, the word is he will retire after next season. I'd be shocked if he played 4 more years including this one. He is likely to get hurt or play less games each season even if he plays 3-4 more years and no way he stays at 24 ppg. History is not kind to players in their late 30s.

Why? I think he'd love to be the 6th man on a title contender. And the Lakers could easily be on in two years.

With two more top draft picksthe next two years and $100 million Iin cap space they could easily trade into title contention.

West playoffs will be epic this year. I think it's between GS, Dallas, and SAS

but good lord okc getting the 8 seed? That has to be the most interesting playoff bracket ever

Mavs are still going to lose 2nd round in playoffs. good trade but lets be real the Chris Pauls and the Russell Westbrooks of the world aren't losing any sleep on this. Steph Baby face assassin Curry is still gonna drop 99 pts in a shoot out.

Yeah, he's a bit overrated as a defender and I'm not sure how much he really helps them on offense. Zac Lowe talked about this a bit on his last podcast.

On a completely unrelated note, the Cavs are infuriating to watch. They are just atrocious on defense and so inconsistent on offense. Flashes of absolute brilliance coupled with stretches of zero effort and cohesion.

Yup, sucks that Andy is done for the season, but the Cavs knew they were going to be playing some portion of the season without him. He's one of the most injury prone guys in the league. I'm guessing they were planning on 55-60 starts max from him. He played 76 games last year, before that was 31, 25, 25. You can't count on a guy like that to be in your rotation the whole year. Everyone with half a brain knew he was going to miss a chunk of time at some point this year.

Now they need to make damn sure they go out an get someone who can play 10-15 minutes a game for them at center, because they damn sure can't afford to put Brendan Hayward in as a regular rotation player and they can't ask Tristan Thompson to play for than 28-30 minutes a game and bang with other bigs like Andy could. Playing Lou Amundson. It would be nice if they could get Brandan Wright or Mozgov, but that's going to be a lot to ask given how little they have to trade away.

Yup, and that was an excellent game. Westbrook is so damned good. He and Curry are not your traditional pass first PGs, and it's a loaded position, but I think they're by far the 2 best in the NBA and along with Harden are the best 3 guards period right now.

I think the evolution of the PG position has done more to kill the SG than anything else.
