Could do worse than Gomes. At least he is a good clubhouse guy and maybe will help lighten up the otherwise boring Braves. If you are going to suck, might as well have some likeable players to pair next to shitheads like AJ Piersynski and BJ Upton. 1/23/2015 9:16:11 PM |

If THIS doesn't get you hyped for your 2015 Atlanta Braves, shit, I do not know what will. Need to take a shot of Old Crow for every time the phrases "the 31 year old batted .244 last season" and "Tommy John surgery" are mentioned. 1/27/2015 2:41:55 PM |

Only positive thing I've read all off-season for the Braves was Keith Laws farm system rankings in which he shockingly had the Braves at #6. Went from being bottom 5 to top 10 in one season which is amazing. Not sure I agree, but Law is apparently high on a lot of the prospects the Braves acquired. 1/28/2015 9:08:41 PM |

Yeah it sucks to lose a power bat like Gattis especially since 30 hr is like 45 in the steroid era with the lack of offense now. But truthfully this is a great move for Gattis in that he gets to DH now and play on a team with a bright future. 3/9/2015 8:24:56 PM |

Acquired Trevor Cahill for what looks like some nobody OF from single A. Arizona really wanted to unload his $12M contract and make room on their roster, and the Braves only have to pay about $5M to keep Wandy Rodriguez out of the rotation.
Hope he can get back to his Oakland days, he's been pretty bad since then 4/3/2015 6:40:36 AM |

that's a good loss on bj, I don't mind losing kimbrel, having somebody to get 3 outs isn't really that hard. He's really damn good, but you kinda had to know it was coming. Can't pay a closer 10M when your team is 60-102 4/5/2015 7:29:55 PM |
rflong All American 11472 Posts user info edit post |
Yeah it was clear that Kimbrel would eventually be traded, but I'm surprised they did it so soon and with the Padres again. The move saves the Braves $40M owed to BJ so that is huge and one of the prospects is supposed to be a stud. Can't be too upset about this move. Braves are really going to suck hard. 4/5/2015 8:36:38 PM |
Jeepin4x4 #Pack9 35774 Posts user info edit post |
we got a lot for Kimbrel and offloading Upton's contract is huge. It sucks to see Kimbrel go but we weren't going to have a lot for him to do this year. 4/5/2015 8:57:54 PM |
ncstatetke All American 41128 Posts user info edit post |
I didn't follow the Braves much over the past 5 years. Tell me, does Heyward have any power? All I see from him so far is a doubles guy 4/5/2015 9:05:54 PM |
wolfpack2105 All American 12428 Posts user info edit post |
^When Heyward came into the league, he was looked at as a 25-30 homer per year type of guy. 6'5 220, fluid swing. That just never happened. 15-20 homers....270-280 average...340-350 OBP. His defense is very valuable as he is a damn good defender.
The kimbrel/upton trade is about as good as we could have hoped for and even though I love Kimbrel...it was something that HAD to happen. A top 70 pitching prospect, a young OF prospect and a Top 50 pick. Not to mention we also unloaded Upton's contract. I'm sure this will piss off a ton of fans, but I love this trade and what the Braves have done this offseason. 6 of their Top 11 prospects have been obtained in this offseason alone.
Buster Olney:
Quote : | "Heard from several execs about SD-ATL: Each loves it for ATL. Said one: "I don't think for the money they took on, [SD] improved that much."" |
Getting rid of Upton's contract is about as big of a deal as the prospects/picks ATL got in return. Great trade.

Glad to see it looks like the Braves fans on TWW are using their head and not their heart when it comes to this trade. I loved Kimbrel, he was the best closer to come around since Mariano Rivera, but odds are he will break down in the near future. Yes, they will be awful this season, maybe next season too. But with the financial flexibility and the loaded farm system they've obtained, contending by 2017 and/or 2018 might not be a pipe dream after all 4/6/2015 11:59:37 AM |
BrickTop All American 4508 Posts user info edit post |
after the initial shock wore off, I didn't think it was that bad of a trade. SD is basically paying ATL ~$55 million, two prospects AND a draft pick for Kimbrel. that's a pretty good return.
in fact, I can get behind each the deals we've made in a vacuum. but what we've failed to do is replace the offense we've traded away. I mean, we've gotten next to NO IMPACT hitters in return, ML ready, prospect or otherwise.
people say hitting is at an absolute premium right now, and we've been paid accordingly for that in the form of high potential pitching (in the heyward, jupton and gattis deals), but the only thing we've brought back of note is Ruiz, the 3B from HOU.
I'm not saying that we traded three major hitters and we should have gotten three major hitters in return, but it would have been nice to get one or two elite hitting prospects somewhere along the way. hell even when we traded LaStella to CHC, we only got one of our old prospects back (who is now suspended for violation of drug policy).
I do like the potential of some of the hitters: Ruiz, Jace Peterson (who is on the opening day roster), mallex smith (speedy as hell OF). but none of them are going to scare opposing pitchers. and if by some chance a miracle happens and they all make it, over half the lineup will be slap hitting speedsters.
one last thing - I can further swallow the Kimbrel deal if the rebuild is now done in much much less time. as it stood prior to the trade, we were looking at at least a two year turnaround. possibly three before things began falling back into place. BJ Upton would not have been an albatross on such a bad team during that time frame. and he'd be gone by the time we're relevant again. but now he's gone, there are no more excuses or dead weight preventing us from winning (only time, of which it should be a year, maybe a bit more, before we start seeing some of these young guys breaking into the majors). 4/6/2015 1:07:14 PM |

The last two years the Braves lineup consisteted of strikeout hitters + Freeman. Never going to win with that.
Terrible to construct a team full of Ugglas, Uptons, Heywards, Simmons, etc.

12-2 win tonight. Scored 7 in the first, 4 in the 9th. Alex Wood wasn't sharp but he got himself out of jams. Cody Martin was really good out of the pen. Struck out 4 in 2 innings. I didn't realize we have 4 rookies in our pen. Yikes! 3 of them pitched tonight and gave us 4 scoreless innings though, so not a bad debut 4/7/2015 11:08:38 PM |

FFF was robbed by an awesome catch by Stanton. I thought there was no way he was going to make that. A couple errors on the base paths but honestly i like the aggressive attitude.
Did anyone else notice how bad Jonny Gomes kept wanting to step out of the batters box last night? A couple times he did, only to realize it and quickly step back in. Dude still takes incredibly too long to get ready. (Yelich has already received a letter from the league for this).] 4/9/2015 9:14:54 AM |

Only 59 more wins to avoid a 100 loss season!
Seriously though I like the way we are playing. Aggressive on the basepaths, doing little things to put pressure on the opposing pitchers and defense. Like last night when Jace went to third on a grounder to 3rd and forced Wright into a mistake. Last year the Braves don't have players fast enough to even think about trying that.
