^^^ Wow, had no idea about Guzzo. He won many ACCs which is great, but the Big 10/12 is the historically strong conferences in wrestling. Its strange seeing NC State ranked in the top 3 in wrestling over the powerhouses in wrestling but by looking at the schedule results its rightfully deserved. I wholeheartedly welcome the change

The match Friday against #10 VT is for the ACC title.

nah, the winner will have the best conference record (which would be an awesome feather in our cap), but ACC title is decided March 6 in Charlottesville

if they don't move the match from Holshouser, it's gonna be nuts on Friday and Sunday regardless of whether any T-dubbers show up. place was packed against Old Dominion on a Thursday night back in December and that was well before much of the hype/publicity that's been building around the team.

What's the significance of the national dual's? is this the playoffs?

Basically just to give bragging rights to someone and raise excitement for the dual format and the sport in general. The national dual team title is awarded by the National Wrestling Coaches Association. The ACC and NCAA Championships matter more to the team, but it would be a big confidence booster to beat Iowa at Iowa heading into those. These duals are one off meets with the winner of Oklahoma State-Penn State named the national dual champion. That's because Penn State is the highest ranked Big Ten team (#1) and Oklahoma State is the highest ranked non Big Ten team (#3). Iowa is #2 and we're now #4. If we'd beaten VT, we'd be facing Penn State.

21-17 Pack final over undefeated #2 Iowa. first ACC team ever to beat Iowa, per radio guy.

23-1 record on the season

(well, the image they posted on twitter kinda sums that up now)

not to mention we beat teams that were ranked (at the time of each dual) #2, #4, #5, #11, #14, #16 (x2), #17 & #24. were just a single match away from beating #8 Virginia Tech also and going undefeated, but I think I'll take it compared to where we were when Pop came in

This has definitely been the best season in school history. We've had national/ACC champs and team ACC titles, but haven't come close to being this much of a factor as a team. The team's confidence is really high going into the tourneys, which is always good. The ACC and NCAA Tournaments are individual tourneys at each weight class and the teams get points depending on where their wrestlers finish. Add those up to get the team standings.

No problem. Wrestling is unique in how it awards the team titles. Tennis is the closest to it, but they have an NCAA team tournament and an NCAA individual tournament.

We're apparently a team that is better suited for duals than individual match-ups. We do have a couple studs, but a lot of guys "minimize" points...as in they don't get majors against them and allow for the other team to get bonus points. Then our studs come in and get majors and bonus points and it allows us to beat a team like Iowa (and OK State and Nebraska).

So don't be surprised if we lose the ACC tourney to Vtech (and since they did beat us already) and not put up a lot of points at the NCAA's either.

Yep. That was the key last night. Both teams won 5 matches, but State, obviously, got more bonus points.
In the ACC/NCAA tourney, it doesn't matter how you win a match, just that you do. The key for our non-ranked guys will be to finish as high as possible. That sounds like what they should be doing, but in a tourney, getting those guys to finish 3rd/4th will help us. The NCAA tourney will be a different animal. I'm not sure how many are projected to go from State. Of course the more that do, the better our chances. The key in tournaments is not only to have good wrestlers, but multiple ones.

yeah, we're not gonna win the NCAA title barring something crazy, but we do have a chance for four All-Americans this year (Gwiz, Max, Gantt, KJ, maybe even Renda), which would be a school record. I think we've had a total of around 30 All-Americans in school history, with a lot of those being repeats for the same guys (which Gwiz and KJ would be as well)

Under Coach Popolizio, State has finished 5th, 6th, and 6th (only 6 teams) in the ACC Tourney and 63rd, 19th, and 16th in the NCAA Tourney. Can definitely win the ACC this season and should be able to finish better than 16th in the nation, but tournament wrestling is a different animal from dual season. You can see here that there are two different sets of rankings: http://intermatwrestle.com/rankings/college/Team

Our dual ranking is 2nd.
Tournament ranking is 8th.

I'd say we're in a great spot for a Top 10 finish. Top 5 would be awesome.

Maybe a 10-15% chance of winning the NCAA team title. I expect Penn State to win it.
