2 more wins than 2014?

8-4. People overlooking BC, VT, and UNC games. We will definitely lose one of these, probably two. Clemson and FSU will be our other two losses. I think we solve the Wake on the road curse next year.

I would feel pretty confident in saying the 4 OOC games, @Wake, and Cuse are definitely games we can expect to win. We all know that doesn't necessarily mean we will win those but we certainly should. To me, everything else is either a toss up at this point (UNC, @BC, @VT, Louisville) or games we'll likely lose (@FSU, Clemson). I don't think it'd be a stretch at all to go 2-2 in the "toss up" games and 0-2 vs FSU and Clemson.

But this is also predicting this 9 months out, so a lot can change.

^^ @FSU is the only game I would place in the "likely lose" category.

I think Clemson is losing like 9 of 11 starters on D and their best coach just left for SMU so they're going to be in a big transition. That's more of a toss up in CF. But yeah, semantics.

That's true...Clemson loses basically their entire defense. And their OC. I expect their O to still be fine next year, assuming DeShaun Watson is healthy. He was pretty great when healthy this season. The game being in Raleigh definitely helps. Trying to predict games 9 months out is kinda useless anyways

yeah this year's start to conference play was brutal - FSU, @Clemson, BC, @Louisville all without a bye.

Clemson's defensive back-ups are probably better than our starters. They've been recruiting pretty well the past 5 years.

2014 review/2015 preview by patrick stevens here....all seems pretty reasonable:

http://www.syracuse.com/patrick-stevens/index.ssf/2014/12/acc_2014_football_wrap_nc_stat.html?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=t.co

Quote :
"Way-too-early 2015 guess: Speaking of less-than-imposing out-of-league slates, N.C. State faces Eastern Kentucky and Troy at home and Old Dominion and South Alabama on the road next year. The Wolfpack might not crack the Florida State/Clemson/Louisville tier in the Atlantic Division, but there's enough in place that something in the 7-5 or 8-4 neighborhood should be anticipated.

That might not satisfy N.C. State fans a ton, but the Wolfpack is not going to stack another five-victory over the one it enjoyed in 2014. Maybe Doeren can coax a 10-win season out of his roster, but the Wolfpack is solid in a lot of places but great in few. That's not the sort of overall identity that lends itself to much more than a respectable season and a mid-level bowl bid."

That seems fair. I agree that while we are quite strong at a few positions (run game and QB namely) - we aren't overwhelming anybody at other positions and right now that's the difference between us being 7-8 win team and a 9+ win team. Obviously this was only year 2 for Doeren and we made great strides...and this year's recruiting class is pretty strong. All of which is a good foundation going forward.

We'll be breaking in all new special teams(LS, K, P, KR/PR), breaking in 2 new OTs as well as likely getting some first-time game reps for several RS-FR and/or true FR...I'm fine with a weak OOC schedule.

We're not competing for a playoff spot here people, pad your record with early wins while you work the kinks out(and hopefully get McClendon and other back-ups some PT), then hit the ground running when you start ACC play. Hopefully we won't have a stacked 3-4 game stretch like we did this year but I'd rather start ACC play at 4-0 beating scrubs than 1-3 or 2-2 losing to ranked teams.

This year is all about getting a higher # of wins(8-9 regular season) for a better bowl, we're not ready to compete for the ACC Championship yet.

I don't care who we play OOC as long as we win and it counts towards bowl eligibility. Stop kidding yourselves. We're still a long way away from needing to worry about how strong our OOC schedule looks year-to-year. Using that nervous energy to worry about how to finish in the top 2-3 in our Division would be a better use of our time.

the only reason i'd want a better OOC at this point is simply from an interest standpoint as a fan. playing south alabama, odu, troy, and eastern kentucky is just boring as shit.

I really don't give a shit about bowls. They're participation trophies. I know, I know, the schools love them.

I'd rather see a good or better 12 game schedule than worry about some shitty 13th game reward for mediocre teams.

Looking at State's all-time rushing list...barring injury, Shad should finish 4th in State history in rushing yards. He's currently in 10th with 2369 yards. Ray Robinson is 4th with 2781, so it wouldn't take much to pass him in 2015. But 3rd is Tremayne Stephens 3553...so it would take 1200 yards next year to pass him - really unlikely.

http://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/north-carolina-state/rushing.html

Assuming this is accurate, Mike Glennon finished his career with -280 yards rushing. Good for 321st, dead last, on the list

forgot the 2015 thread existed, so i guess i'll just copy this here:
he's the guy that got demoted from their OC this year, so I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't stay long if he gets an offer to be a coordinator again (he stayed at Arkansas as WR coach for less than a month to take that Syracuse job). supposedly a great recruiter though, so I'll take it. hadn't heard anything about Frisman Jackson leaving though.

so did we fire/demote the previous WR coach? good to see that the article posted above says he's known as one of syracuse's best recruiters and has a lot of ties to the south florida area. obviously we're not gonna be stealing talent from fsu and teams like that - but it'd be nice to get some of that florida talent.

Bowls matter for the extra practice time to improve skills-- which are huge for the next season, and help with recruiting. Right now we need all the help we can get.

Trying to punch above our weight right now will hurt us more in the long term. We're not ready to compete with the big boys yet. Doeren's playing the long game. Play 4 winnable OOC games, beat the in-conference teams we are supposed to beat, maybe steal one or two from the better ACC programs, finish with 8 or 9 wins, and get to a mid-tier bowl.

It's a lot easier to sell recruits on a team that's "on the cusp" of being a contender at 8-9 wins than going 6-6 because we played too tough of an OOC schedule for the talent level we have.

They don't go back and do qualitative analysis on the schedule and go AHA you played shit teams to get that record, and therefore i won't commit to play at NC State.

If Doeren can continue this trajectory, recruiting will improve, results will improve, and scheduling will improve.

Linebacker Ford Howell, who signed with Wake Forest out of high school, is apparently transferring to State. We recruited him out of high school and originally committed to us, per the twitter dot com. I don't know much about him really, but I guess this is a good thing. I assume he'll sit out 2015 and be eligible in 2016.

heard about this last week but just now became public. sucks because he's a good kid who was willing to move over from LB when we were thin at DL. fortunately, we're not nearly as thin now, so we've got other guys that can take his spot in the rotation.

Non-Conference:
Troy - W
Old Dominion - W
South Alabama - W
Eastern Kentucky - W

Conference Home:
Clemson - L
Louisville - W
Cuse - W
UNC-Cheat - W

Conference Away:
FSU - L
BC - L
WF - W
VT - L

8 wins in the regular season is my conservative estimate, I'd like to hope 4-4 in the league is a floor, but we like losing in Winston-Salem, so we could dip lower. Hopefully we don't get screwed out of the 1st tier of bowls this time with the 1 additional win.

I wish I could have more confidence in our road conference games. I'd throw VT in there, depending on what time we get them next season. If they're having a mediocre run and it's late in the season, it would depress the crowd and we'd have a good chance of winning. If we beat FSU or Clemson somehow, at 6-2 it might have us in contention for the division. Maybe.

Toss-ups:
Home v Louisville - played them tough this year, but I fear their offense will be improved
Home v UNC - always going to be a toss up
Away v Boston College - curse of TOB
Away v Wake Forest - I rather not explain why, too painful
Away v Virginia Tech - I just hope it's not a night game, or VT has a BYE before playing us

Should lose:
Home v Clemson - their QB (if healthy) will likely be the O-POY
Away v Florida State - their Defense will by nasty"

Of those tossups, I think we beat UNC, BC, and Wake. 8 win season and an invite to the Belk Bowl if ND doesn't get drawn for it.
