up to $47 now it looks like. Still might be worth it...I think a lot of people will be chasing this one.

Purchased some AAPL today (along with some SSW, completely unrelated). First time purchasing AAPL, decided ahead of their next large consumer release was as good a time as any. I still don't like their products but it's hard to argue with their overall performance.

Let's hop my finally buying some doesn't signal the death knell of the company.

I do options trading occasionally but mine is all of the high risk high reward type. I have had some amazing runs and also lost every bit of money on some of them as well.

I picked up some GPRO felt like a good buy point regardless and hoping earnings come out ok, those rumors cant hurt either.

Feeling pretty happy about picking up AMD at 2.46 about 2 weeks ago also moving on buyout rumors. Up 33% but hoping to convince myself to hold until it hits $4 again.

Wouldn't it be crazy if Apple filed their patent for a GoPro-competing camera, just for the purpose of depressing GPRO in advance of a buyout or hostile takeover or something?

would not be shocked. And Apple has the perfect infrastructure to incorporate GPRO tech. Imagine a GPRO with an apple logo that would integrate with your iphone/macbook and distribution through itunes. gold.

Hmmm halted trading.....

And we have a huge forecast beat.

that and poor guidance I think. I was hoping they would provide guidance on new revenue streams not related to the existing camera inventory.

GPRO just seems too risky to me. It seems like an Apple or maybe Google (or maybe even Amazon) could annihilate them almost at will, which they'd be inclined to move into that space and do if GPRO becomes successful enough.

Now, maybe that takes the form of a buyout at a premium, if, say, Apple determines that's the most cost-effective and/or expeditious way to attack that market space. If so, great...it'll be nice to be long GPRO.

On the other hand, what if they decide to build a competitor in-house? Sorry, I don't see GoPro being able to stand up to that. GoPro may have a head start, but Apple would fucking nuke them in terms of R&D capability, beat them in brand name appeal, and offer proprietary integration with their ecosystem. Plus, I have used the latest-gen GoPros, but their earlier device have a terribly cumbersome interface. I know the new ones are better, but are they on par there with what Apple or Google would bring to the table?

Again, it could totally go great for GPRO holders. They could get snatched up like Beats By Dre or something. On the other hand, I learned a hard lesson a few years ago by holding on to Garmin for too long and not taking the huge profits I could have. The smartphone revolution smashed the portable GPS revolution, and I lost pretty much all of those unrealized gains.

^ all good points and exactly the reason why I wouldnt hold GPRO long. If they continue to rely on hardware sales they are doomed to fail. There's only so much innovation in camera tech before it becomes the same as everything else (or even falls behind). Acquisition would be a lucky break for longs but I think GPRO will ultimately follow the route of Garmin unless they can find new revenue streams (perhaps cameras on professional sports players and offer stream as paid sub or drone tech).

Thinking AH action was fear and algorithms. Just find it hard to believe that 18% correction is warranted considering blowout earnings in Q4 and slightly lower earnings forecast in Q1. I dont expect it to be above today's close at tomorrow's open but I think it'll get close by the closing bell.

^^ Yep, they are almost certainly boned if they continue with just selling hardware. I have to think that they aren't that dumb, but I'm just not sure where they go. With everything I can think of, they would risk attracting a real apex predator to the frenzy if the feeding got really good. I think they're just too narrowly focused + too little moat for me to ever invest in them.

The other problem is that, in addition to only seeing one way to win (acquisition) and a thousand ways to die, there just doesn't seem to be that much potential upside even on the win. I just don't see there to be anything stopping Apple or Google (or Amazon or others) from out GoPro-ing GoPro. It seems to me that the only way they would want to acquire them is if they could do it at a reasonable price...if they become super successful and the stock price goes way up, I'm afraid it would tempt the big players to come in to that lucrative market and lay the smackdown (instead of acquiring GPRO at a steep price). If that didn't happen and they got acquired at a more modest premium that would be attractive for an Apple or Google, well, buying GPRO would be holding a hot potato and not having that much to show for it in the end.

Yeah I have heard some talk about trying to get in with putting cameras on professional athletes more and this is something they definitely need to get out ahead of. Imagine if you could watch an entire game streamed from one particular players POV. Also, imagine that receiver going across the middle and getting to see the replay of what he was seeing when he got lit up.

Hoping to see a rebound throughout the day as others have said yes there was some bad news in the conf call but seems like quite an overreaction if I hadnt bought yesterday I would def pick some up today. I would imagine it is back above 50 within a week or at least I hope so getting dicked like that I just want to get back to even and step away myself.

This isn't exactly stock market stuff, but I'll pose the question here.

I live in FL, and have no state income tax. I just started working in AL, which has a ~5% income tax. Even though I have exactly jack shit to do with Alabama other than working 30 minutes across the state line, they fuck me with their tax.

At my job, I can contribute up to $18,000/year into my 401k plan, and can do it pre-tax, post-tax, or Roth 401k. Would it be advantageous to contribute the full $18k/year, pre-tax style, to avoid paying AL state taxes on that portion of my income...then I could withdraw money back out other than the company match up to 6%, since I'd be withdrawing it in FL and not paying state taxes on it?

I've never had a job with a 401k before, so I'm just figuring this stuff out, and it's a bit of an odd situation (living in one state, working in another, and one state has no state income tax).

You'd get charged a 10% penalty unless it was a hardship withdrawal.

You wouldn't contribute post-tax money into to a 401k until after you hit the 18k cap. So you are looking at pre-tax or Roth contributions. Roth is almost always the way to go, however the main question would be how long you plan to stay with your current employer. If you know you may be leaving in a year or two, you could go pre-tax 401(k) contributions now, then once you move to a different company you can then convert the 401(k) into a Roth IRA. This would avoid paying AL tax, but wouldn't work if you plan on being with your employer for the long term.

As others have said, you can't withdraw the money right now unless it is a hardship withdraw.

That sucks. I was hoping it was like a Roth IRA where you could take out principle without penalty.

I did pre-tax, at 6% to maximize company match. I already have a Roth IRA that I max out.

First of all, how the fuck have you never looked into opening an IRA?

Second, meh...

Quote :
"Accounts between $10,000 and $50,000 will have 1% of annual contributions matched for three consecutive years. The match rises to 1.5% for accounts between $50,000 and $100,000, to 2.5% above $100,000, to 5% above $250,000 and tops out at 10% for accounts at or above $500,000. This means a maximum $5,500 annual tax-deductible IRA contribution would be met with at least $55 and up to $550 a year, depending on the account size."
