sounds like his versatility will make him exactly that, which isn't a bad thing

Watched him play a few times and he is very versatile and high energy. I had him as a late 1st round pick, particularly to the patriots who love versatility.

He is a high energy type player that can help ST and add another layer to the Def. WR are deep in the draft and OT can be picked up late as well. It wasn't a sexy pick but it was a solid pick.

Wait to judge the draft after just the first round.

From what I read, Shaq was Gett's #2 target of the players he thought would be available at 25. That's good enough for me to be happy with the pick. On the surface he looks like a guy that can fill in at OLB or safety on day one, with the potential to blossom into a superstar.

I fully expect him to become a three down LB, but he probably isn't ready for it as a rookie and he won't have to be, barring injury. He'll probably get most of his early PT on passing downs and ST, as he probably needs to add some muscle to be effective against the run in the NFL. That said, he definitely seems to fit the mold of the LBs that Gettleman and Rivera like.

I just saw where Kiper didn't like this pick at all, which makes me like it even more. I'm almost back to being a panthers fan, something I haven't said since before the delhomme/hurney era.

He could also be a natural fit at nickelback. A lot of it depends on how the roster around him develops, but it makes the most sense to put him on the field alongside TD and Davis, but not necessarily as a linebacker.

I'm guessing #1 was Humphries? Can you link the article?

The guy I've got my fingers crossed for WR-wise is Lockett. I think that kid is going to be a stud. Dad and uncle both played professionally, and everytime I watched K-State he made plays all over the field on offense and special teams.

I don't know the original source, but I read it here,

Quote :
"“Bottom line is they were the two guys we were talking about. D.J. and Shaq, those were the two,” Gettleman admitted after taking Thompson with the 25th pick. “Either way we’re getting a really good football player. They’re both really talented. They both have big upside. They’re talented guys, and we would not have been disappointed either way. That’s the way it fell.”"

Just glad we followed the Patriots model of drafting for need instead of 'BPA' which us what people use to justify bad draft picks.

Also glad those rb got snapped up early saving us from wasting our first rounder on an rb

Lots of DB, OL, RB, and WR talent left. I bet we go offense but it's really a crapshoot.

We hit the offense. Get a WR and add depth to OL/DB. I wouldn't be mad if we double dipped at WR!!!

Hoping for WR or OT in the 2nd round, need someone to slide to us.

Really expect us to take a DE just to mess with me, haha.

Reports we gave up 2nd, 3rd, and 6th round picks to move up? If so, this was a horrible move.

and we can judge the move after seeing the kid play, maybe?

of course we gave up our 2nd round pick to get their 2nd round pick

and one of our 6th rounders we still have 3 picks in the 5th round

guy has an upside of Julius Thomas and a downside of Dwayne Jarrett. It's a big weapon for Cam though.

It's a lot to give up for a project but we just gotta wait and see how he fits into the offense. Cam's got his young weapons now.

So Getts is saying they had a 1st round grade on Funchess and after they saw a bunch of guys they coveted go off early in the 2nd, they decided to make a move. Apparently didn't think any of the OTs left were worth a 2nd round pick.

Makes sense to get giant receivers, because they're there only ones with a chance to catch passes from Cam.

It takes years to judge a draft. And last years draft turned out fairly well. I'm sure these are good players and hopefully they turn out well.

But this team has a massive need for a left tackle and to have it not addressed in two straight drafts is highly questionable.

You don't often get Pro Bowl left tackles with the 28th or 25th pick in the draft, so you can't blame Gettleman too much for not reaching just because Gross retired. I wanted us to get Morgan Moses last year but I'm glad we didn't because he was a fucking turnstile. He would be getting blasted if he had taken him over KB or even Ealy.

I would say Gettleman and company thought Byron Bell would be adequate at LT last year. Every team has strengths and weaknesses, LT wasn't going to be our strength last year. But I think Bell did decent in training camp. So question their evaluation of offensive linemen more than their drafting strategy, imo.

And with our team's philosophy of establishing the run to setup play action, it's almost more important to get big bruising run blocking offensive linemen than an elite blindside pass protector, especially when Cam is one of the more mobile QBs in the league.

LT is still a weakness, but it gets unrealistically magnified when a bunch of bloggers and TV personalities look at a sheet of paper on team needs and tell a fanbase in a radio interview or online editorial that the Panthers are retards for not using a 1st round pick on a guy with 2nd-3rd round talent just because we don't have Joe Thomas. Besides, the interior and even right side of the line has been pretty solid with Remmers.

But we do need more depth, and Oher or whoever else isn't a longterm solution.

Yup, we had more draft picks than roster spots. Makes sense to trade a couple for a better player instead of just throwing them away after training camp.

While I'm not a big fan of either Funchess or Strong, it seems to me like trading up earlier in the 2nd to try & grab a deep threat like Devin Smith would've made more sense, but who's to say they didn't try that & got turned down

As for tackles, I don't think any of the tackles in this draft are too good, outside of maybe Flowers, so it makes sense to me to not reach for one just to have another T on the roster

But, I'm obviously not a NFL scout or talent evaluator, so what does my opinion mean?
