the storm at the beginning is the only major thing the author fudged for the sake of storytelling. (i think i mentioned that either in this thread or another one already)... That's pretty much the first thing he always mentions in his interviews.

Finally got around to reading the book last week. Read it all in four days. I thought it was excellent but as an aerospace engineer, sci-fi geek, and NASA/spaceflight employee and enthusiast that is prob to be expected. Very scientifically accurate and I'm hoping the movie maintains that level of accuracy.

So 20th Century Fox had to consult with NASA on a ton of things while making this movie (We actually have a specific department that consults with media, even on silly movies like Transformers 3) so as a thanks for all of the technical guidance they are holding a special pre-screening for NASA employees on Monday. We are having a free raffle here to see who gets to go. Something like a few hundred tickets (out of a space center of like 4000 people, half of which prob won't enter) so its about a 1 in 5 chance I might get one. Will report back.

I am not as intellectually invested in the topic, more of a curiosity and wonder at what our best and brightest can discover in a universe so vast! Heard the science was very accurate (believe the author is not only a hobbyist but actively interested in Astronomy).

The read itself wasn't a literary work of genius but it was written in layman's terms and was actually very funny. From the previews I think Damon will kill it as Watney and the rest of the cast is also very good. Can't wait to watch this movie!

Looks like I'm just extremely unlucky. There were ~300 tickets they were giving out. ~400 people signed up. I didn't get one.

Today there was a raffle for the unclaimed tickets. I still didn't get one.

Literally every person I know who entered except for myself and two others got one.

Id really like to know how that conversation goes down on something like Transformers...after NASA gives them some actual science, do they respond with "You know, we are going to stick with the schlock weve got. Thanks anyhow!" Im picturing someone asking, in all seriousness, "So how long would a deactivated Transformer last on the moon?"

Im about 3/4ths through the book, and Im really hopeful the movie stays pretty true to it. The trailers do seem to imply there is video communication with Mars, which concerns me...maybe that will be the one exception.

^^I think for the most part the consultation is so they can get permission to use NASA logos and insignias and stuff to look more authentic. I know someone who consulted with the movie studio that made Gravity -- my coworker is a leading expert in orbital mechanics and space attitude dynamics. She spent like 3 hours on the phone talking with them telling them all about how things properly move when in space and what works and what doesn't. They pitched all these things at her and she corrected everything and the studio was all super grateful and everything. Fast forward a few years and the movie comes out and they clearly didn't listen to a single damn thing she said.

I think its him doing the journal. I think in the movie they change it to video journals instead of a typed word type document. Can't recall what was in the book, maybe it was supposed to be a video journal all along?

The atmosphere of Mars is very thin, even 100mph winds would feel like a stiff breeze to us. It has to be 50 mph even to PICK UP dust much less anything else.

Ran into Robonaut in the cinema lobby! The real Robonaut doesn't have a Chevy logo plastered on his chest though.

Great movie . Really good adaptation of the book. Even included a lot of lines taken directly from the book. Only left out a few things, but if they had included them it would have upped the run time by at least 30 mins so understandable that they couldn't include everything. A few blatantly obvious fallacies (none of which were in the book at least) but I won't be that guy and post everything that was wrong

Loved it. I can go along with the few points of drama they actually left out of the movie. I love the incorporation of direct dialogue because it was hilarious.















My one bone of contention [SPOILER]:














I groaned at how they portrayed his rescue from the MAV while in space after they stuck with the story so well to that point. There was no reason for Lewis to have to go out nor for him to do the silly "Iron Man" thing (yes I know he mentioned doing that in the book) when the entire rescue was crazy enough as written. It felt like some weird Gravity-esc movie shenanigans.

The book really focused on preparing and details for the journeys.

But overall they ended up making a really good movie. I was impressed with how they showed how skinny he became with scurvy and all that.

And they did a brilliant job with his launch back into space. For some reason the launch into space with open windows and no nose was really unnerving. And then the entire borderline nauseating unstable rotation of him in orbit.

I really enjoyed it, but was sort of curious what they gave Commander Lewis more of a part in the rescue/why the changed the rescue at all. I think what was done in the book would have translated very well to the screen. Not really a complaint because I still thought the movie was great.

As for the 3D, I thought it was perfect for all the landscape/wide shots and not the typical 3D 'we're going to throw stuff at the screen'. It was very subtle and was a good compliment to the movie.

Thought it was good, and I inderstood most of the deviations from the book. Surprised Kapoor was played by a black guy (isn't that an Indian name?) and I really didn't like the scene with Childish Gambino. I agree that the 3D was done well. I didn't know they only showed it in 3D where I went to watch it. I almost waited to see it elsewhere because 3D gives me a headache but it was actually good.

I was surprised they left out the bit about the storm or the rover getting stuck. The storm had so much promise on screen! Also surprised they didn't build in some sort of love interest for him (Kate Mara) because, you know, Hollywood - but I'm not bothered that they didn't.

My only other gripe was that it made it look too easy and too fast, but I get they had limited screen time.

I think they did originally have an Indian actor for Kapoor but scheduling did not work, also some people are upset that Mackenzie Davis played Mindy park instead of a SK actress

It was explained in the book. He essentially had to combine some of the second rover into his rover and he needed more space to do so.
