Bully playing a free set the Wednesday before Hopscotch starts

did any of y'all go to CAM tonight for the block party? I got there around 7:45 and Bully had already almost cleared the stage of gear. bummed I missed them and definitely not what I expected since the Facebook event said they'd go on 7:30 or 8 (and the event would last til 9)

not going to Hopscotch, but i'll be in town Saturday night. If I wanted to try to go see Daniel Romano at Tir-Na-Nog what should I expect to pay at the door?

I don't think you're able to pay for individual shows

ok i wasn't sure. i was told that some of the bars would let you pay a door fee if they weren't at capacity. thought i'd give it a shot if that were the case.

^ AFAIK that was only for the first year or two.

Daniel Romano is also playing a day show at Ruby Deluxe today if you don't want to get a Saturday pass.

i don't think i've ever seen a crowd look as emotionally drained as Fletcher's did post-waxahatchee

Hopscotch vets, how did this year compare to previous ones? How were the crowd sizes and attendance?

I spent Sunday at Slim's for the hangover party. I was already planning to attend to see the Backsliders and AA, but glad I was able to catch a DR set as well.

After five years of VIP, I didn't bother with it this year. I had no problems except I didn't bother waiting in the line that formed outside Moon Duo to get in for Roky Erickson (prob. would've taken ten minutes) and I got to Pour House very early on Friday to make sure I saw King Gizz (NBD because I love Birds of Avalon and the Zack Mexico set was INSANE).

I stopped buying the VIP after the 2nd year. I've never had to wait more than a couple of minutes to get in anywhere. Unless you really wanna go to the VIP party, it's not worth it.

The only thing I was bummed about was the huge line to get into a crowded tir na nog friday for Mitski/whoever was after Mitski.

I also think The Hive should probably not be a Hopscotch venue as it can fit like 15 people able to see anything.

It's not ideal, but there are only so many usable rooms. The Longview Center went away when it became creepy Vintage Church, Memorial isn't being used, etc., and everything gets bumped down.

Is Southland Ballroom not a venue because of it's location or is that a management decision?

I'd have to assume it's location. The longest distance from venue-to-venue is Kennedy to CAM, which is around 0.8 miles. Even in previous years, adding Longview or Five Star would only extend that longest distance by a block. Southland is another 0.8 miles past CAM, meaning it's more than a mile from most of the festival. Being close-ish but out of the way, Deep South is already an island; Southland would be a death spot.

Was Vintage Church actually creepy? They were pretty nice to me when I shot some portraits there. And the one show I caught was a drone noise thing, Helm, and it was v profound, probably specifically due to the location. There was a dude drunk as fuck rolling around on the floor and lying down in the pews and on the verge of puking though. I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't invite Hopscotch back if there was more of that on other nights.

here are my portraits from this year btw:

Clarification: the Longview Center was a lovely room to see a show, especially with how well it was programmed (quiet electronics, country-tinged big bands, etc.)

Vintage Church is the organization that took it over, and is one of those misogynistic, prosperity-centered 21st century evangelical deals.

Nothing against the room at all.

^^I never went to the "Longview Center" when it was called that, I just went last year, when it was listed as Vintage Church, and that's who I dealt with and what I'm referring to. I wasn't aware of their politics but it seemed like a cool spot even as VC. *shrug*

^what is wrong with u
