Didn't they say deGrom is batting over .300 vs lefties? Doesn't sound like a bad bat to have in the lineup.

Also, if you field you should bat. The DH is the worst thing in baseball.

I'm sure that's a robust and useful stat with his 100 career ABs.

NL baseball is unwatchable at times because of the pitcher trying to hit. It isn't just a free out either, you get situations like the one going on right now where Degrom might get out of yet another jam because the pitcher comes up.

Kershaw put a pretty big swing on that ball, was better contact than half of the Dodgers' position players have managed to get on deGrom pitches.

Baseball has so many fucking problems. Umps are amongst the biggest, but they're part of baseball's beloved "tradition" so there will never be any chance they go away.

Is it a strike, who fucking knows? Baseball: where damn near every call is subjective even though almost none of them need to be.

Road teams dominating the playoffs so far. Hope the Cubbies take game 2, so sick of St Louis. Great organization, just tired of seeing them win.

Crappy LA fans cheering while a player is on the ground hurt. Utley was way off the base, I don't understand how that's not interference and an automatic out. Should have been a double play and no run counted.

AND NOW THEY'RE RULING UTLEY SAFE? WHAT THE FUCK? He wasn't even tryng to touch the base, and then willing left the field. Shouldn't even matter what Tejada did. Th annoucners even said what Utley did isn't allowed in the NFL, how can it be ok here to tackle someone?

And now Utley scores the go-ahead run when there should be 3 outs. This is all such bullshit.

3 runs now owed to bullshit.

I don't understand any of this. How can the player be safe if HE NEVER TOUCHED THE BAG? And then willingly walked off the field? If a batter walks back into the dugout with only 2 strikes he is automatically out, how is this not the same?

Mets better come out next inning ANGRY. They've had plenty of comebacks down more than this, never rule this team out of it. But I've punched everything in my house short of putting a hole in the wall over how messed up the Utley/Tejada play went down.

I guess umps thinking is that Utley went to dugout because he was called out and that isn't giving himself up.

Still, hard to take.

Baseball is the most childish game I can think of. It's the only sport where guys trying to injure each other is considered part of the game. Hitting batters, take out slides.. fucking childish.

Umps are just the fucking worst too, completely unpredictable, and no one holds them accountable.

Tejada didn't touch the bag, BUT NEITHER DID UTLEY. If the ump made the right call originally, then the fielder would have had a chance to go back and tag the plate. But since the fielder was ON THE FREAKIN' GROUND, they would have called Utley out on interference and this would be a 2-2 game.

Please let Utley start Monday. Please.

Don't throw at this head but he deserves Harvey heat right between the numbers.

There is no way on earth that his intention wasn't to railroad Tejada. Of course he didn't want to break his leg but there is no positive outcome that comes from a slide like that.

MLB says replay can decide that a runner can be safe if it is determined he would have touched 2nd if the correct call had been orginally made by the ump. That's why Utley was given second even though he never touched 2nd and went back to the dugout.

It's shitty but move on. Mets took care of business in game one and now have home field advantage. I jeep forgetting this round is a 5 not 7 game series. NY is is great shape.

Wouldn't the fielder also have gone back and touched 2nd if the correct call had originally been made? Why is the runner given the benefit of the doubt and not the fielder? If both players are assumed to have had a chance, then the runner would clearly be guilty of interference.

^^ exactly. It's a dumb rule irrespective of the fact it should've been a double play because Utley did that. The Mets literally lost a game in 2007 when Marlon Byrd took out Utley and that was FAR less egregious a play.

Utley suspended 2 games. If MLB agrees he did enough wrong to deserve that, then he did enough wrong to be called out in the game.

Definitely a bullshit call against the Mets. Suspension of Utley should be upheld and the umps involved should be suspended for making such a shit call. In terms of the worst calls in history, this is one, but there have been worse.

I like how the examples of this happening before without a suspension involve multiple other "slides" by Utley.

Dumbass gamesmanship like this is a big reason I'm no more than a very casual baseball fan.

replay causes a stolen base to be overturned by showing less than an inch of shoe coming off the bag....watch this be the end of the Royals' season.

It's so dumb...neighborhood play is supposed to be unreviewable. But then they review it just find out if it was neighborhood or not, and therefor end up having enough evidence to overturn it.

Lol.

I've been bitching about this same shit since i was about 12. It's never made a bit of sense. Unwritten rules are ridiculous and baseball is the only sport that continues to tolerate this shit. NBA did away with a lot of their rough play that used to be considered "part of the game", the NFL is trying like hell to make what is inherently the most dangerous major sport safer, and even hockey has tried to cut down on the violence. Only baseball still does shit like it was 1945. The obsessive love of tradition and "the human element" is just idiotic.

Also, Astros fans with the completely unjustified hubris. Governor of Texas tweeting about the Astros advancing in the 6th innning. Apparently they didn't watch any of the postseason last year.

Nah, I agree. NL baseball can be pretty damn boring to watch. People want to see home runs, not low scoring games. Pitchers duels can be fun every once in a while, but watching them night after night gets old. Do you really like to see scoreless ties in soccer, or 6-3 football scores? I sure don't.
