its not as bad as cnn makes it out to be. nothing is. americans aren't targeted. Highrollers and overall jackasses are. If you are smart about what you do, where you go, and keep a low profile, brazil is as safe as chicago. deet prevents zika and zika is not even bad unless you are pregnant. diseases like dengue and malaria are much worse.

The difference is in most other countries you naturally stand out as someone that can be taken advantage of as a mark. If you're an American in New Orleans, well, it's full of Americans. You can't hide being an American in a Rio de Janiero favela. Americans are hardly alone in this. A lot of people from a lot of different cultures deal with it. Was reading about Syrians dealing with it in Istanbul in a New York Times Magazine article today.

They are pretty used to americans going there quite often. I don't know why you would be in a favela but you are more accurate on that. Thats just part of being smart and keeping a low profile. A white tourist walking into a housing projects in raleigh would be odd as well. Going to the olympics does not require going into a favela. You don't end up in a favela. You have to intentionally "hike" to one.

Not sure why being a Canadian vs. an American would make any difference unless you're saying Brazilians are racists (or the nationalism equivalent) toward Americans. You still stand out as a potential mark.

Yes though, ultimately you have to be smart and not put yourself in the position to be taken advantage of, regardless of where you go.

(Remember on BigSoccer a guy related to the World Cup being there telling a Brazilian friend "I want to go." The friend thought for a few seconds and calmly said "I can get us a couple people that will protect us." )
