The wolfpack club aint rich boys and girls. Its got a lot of members, perhaps ranking up there with the tigers or whatever, but what matters is how much dis members donate. And our fans per capita are not donating all that much.
Our athletics dept doesnt have deep pockets.
We gotta live out another couple shit years of DD before we fire. At least one more year for certain, maybe two just to teach us a lesson.

I'm sure Doeren is scheming ways to blow this game as well, so that he'll have another excuse to go out and buy more donuts.
Maybe he'll go for a QB sneak on 4th and long on our own 10 in the first quarter. Or maybe he'll run a fake punt on 3rd down after calling a timeout to discuss it.
Who knows. The man needs more donut 9/27/2016 4:17:07 PM |

My tickets to WF v NCSU are for sale. Section 17 row J seats 31 and 32.
Face value is $46.63. I'll take $90 for both plus $25 for my parking pass in the TX lot on the corner of Blue Ridge and Trinity.
PM me if you're interested. I live in Graham and work in Raleigh, we can figure out some way to get the tix delivered

Goodnight has ZERO interest in donating money to athletics, this is well known. I applaud him for this.
He donates a lot of money to the education side of things, (the goodnight scholarships, campus buildings, etc). Its pretty gross how much money gets poured into athletic departments in this era. These are supposed to be institutions of higher learning, not corporate football clubs.9/28/2016 10:53:44 AM |

i don't disagree...it's unfortunate. but if we aren't spending the money (and getting the contributions) that other schools are then we kinda can't ever expect to compete on level higher than middle of the road.
goodnight does give a lot to the academic side if y'all hadn't heard.

Quote : | "In a new study, Douglas J. Chung finds that when a college goes from good to great on the football field or basketball court, undergraduate applications increase dramatically. Chung discusses the so-called “Flutie Effect” " |
Quote : | "His findings include:
When a school rises from mediocre to great on the gridiron, applications increase by 18.7 percent. To attain similar effects, a school has to either lower tuition by 3.8 percent or increase the quality of its education by recruiting higher-quality faculty, who are paid 5 percent more than their average peers in the academic labor market.
Students with lower-than-average SAT scores tended to have a stronger preference for schools known for athletic success, while students with higher SAT scores preferred institutions with greater academic quality.
Also, students with lower academic prowess valued the success of intercollegiate athletics for longer periods of time than the high SAT achievers.
Even students with high SAT scores are significantly affected by athletic success—one of the biggest surprises from the research, Chung says.
Schools become more academically selective with athletic success." |

Success on the field can translate to many positive benefits for the university that affect academics. It's not mutually exclusive.
I'd like to see studies on how athletic success affects hiring recent graduates. Hell, I wouldn't know that schools like Marquette and Gonzaga even existed if it weren't for their basketball programs.

I spent a lot of my life growing up in Florida (dad was military). One thing I noticed was that as UF got good a football and then later at basketball, the school suddenly got stronger and stronger academically at least in terms of university rankings.
The athletic programs, specifically football and basketball, are like the advertising arms of colleges. Success on the field/court leads to more involved alumni, more donations, more school pride, more apparel sales, more applications, etc. There is a huge impact that may not be quantifiable. If Goodnight wants to help NC State reach another level, donations to athletics should not be excluded. 9/28/2016 4:56:15 PM |

I agree that athletics can help a new schools gain name recognition, and thus lift their enrollment numbers, but I have a feeling this can only take a school so far in improving the academics side. Otherwise, Alabama should be the Oxford of the americas by now.
For schools like UCF, USF, ECU, APP State, UNCC, successful athletic programs will definitely help boost their enrollment numbers, and thus their pool of quality applicants.
However, I think NC State enrollment is basically beyond the point where successful athletics is gonna make too much of a difference in improving our standing academically.
What WILL help is luring prestigious academics who do noteworthy research, having the most advanced research facilities in the state, drawing the best and the brightest NC highschool students through quality scholarship opportunities.
Perhaps through nurturing these areas NC State can finally churn out our first Rhodes Scholar (UNC has had like 47, we have zero.)
I want our sports teams to win too, but I have no illusions that winning football games is gonna make a huge impact on the prestige of NC State academics. And I'd prefer prestigious academics any day of the week. 9/28/2016 6:38:27 PM |

but overall our campus and raleigh in general is just not a desirable place to be for young people. maybe its desireable for soccer moms and small business but not in the way that is going to attract the academic types, elite athletes and the brightest high school students.

You're missing the point. I also listed several reasons why they will consider going anywhere else BUT nc state. Sports can be a deciding factor if everything esle seems even between your competing offers.
NC State doesn't have anything else to make it stand out against the competition. Its not like we are some extraordinary academic environment like MIT where it would be nonsense to consider sports. We're below the level of a lot of schools that have great sports so we don't really stand a chance without it and we can change sports easier than changing our campus location. 9/28/2016 7:08:16 PM |
