The last 1:30 just proved that Smith isn't ready for primetime. He may draft well because of his upside, but I hope teams don't expect him to be lights out from the start or they'll be disappointed.
I don't know if Dorn in Kapita are in the doghouse or if Markell just got a lot more play because he showed energy and hustle and passed better than Smith.
Won't complain too much, I'm just glad we got a win. 1/17/2017 10:24:29 PM |

Yeah it's weird how Dorn's minutes have gone down...Henderson and Mav played well tonight and so did Markell. But there's been games recently when those guys weren't playing well that I thought Dorn deserved more time.
Kapita maybe just wasn't a good matchup against a smaller lineup like Pitt. We went small a lot tonight because of Pitt's lineup. 1/17/2017 10:29:23 PM |

SuperDude, are you suggesting that DSJ would benefit from returning for one more year? A little more seasoning? If so I would be down for the Gott Hyper Loop to continue to the next testing phase. 1/17/2017 10:51:14 PM |

Yeah, he'd benefit to stay another year, but the money is calling and I don't expect him to stay. He's easily a first rounder, although I think he's playing himself into the late first round. Granted, scouts may be so high on his upside that he can still be a lottery pick. 1/17/2017 11:10:34 PM |

IMO, going small with only one big man is by far the best option this team has.
-Better transition offense and defense -Better spacing and penetration -Better ballhandling and passing -And surprisingly, better rebounding. We were +15 in rebounding tonight, and Pitt is a good rebounding team. IIRC, Tony said it was the biggest rebounding advantage we'd had in an ACC game in years. Guess it's just better quickness helping us get to more loose balls.
Hopefully we stay with small ball the rest of the year. Highly doubtful since Gott prefers playing two bigs, but one can hope 1/17/2017 11:23:38 PM |

Yeah I'm sure dsj would get better if he played another year of college ball. But he'll also get better if he's in the NBA. And he's a guaranteed top 10 or better pick. That's 100% the right choice to go pro. 1/17/2017 11:36:29 PM |

^ You've seen the games so you see the glaring holes. Not a great shooter. Not a great decision maker. Terrible on-ball defender. He's getting by on his athleticism and his ball-handling skills and the idea that he'll improve in all the other areas.
Again, he's got upside, much like *cough* Marvin Williams *cough* back in the day to make himself a lottery pick. He likely won't reach his full potential until he's 23. He'll definitely have growing pains and whatever team that drafts him will have to accept them. 1/18/2017 12:01:24 AM |

I'm no expert on NBA drafting, but I don't think that's how it works.

Hard to play Dorn last night since it was a bad match-up defensively and he was getting shot over at will. I like Dorn's game, his efficiency is crazy, but we were trying to maximize our defense and he was in a tough spot.
It was like Anya, he is clearly our best defender but he's so out of shape they were just killing him on ball screens and pulling him away from the basket.
DSJ staying another year would be insane. You don't pass up a top 5 draft grade for another year of developing in college, ESPECIALLY when you've already had a major knee injury. He's definitely going to struggle early, but he'll end up being a special player.
Yurtseven should stay, but it really depends on how the rest of his season goes. Right now he's not projected as a lottery pick, but obviously if he keeps putting up numbers like last night he could play his way into that high of a projection. It's hard to tell a kid projected to go in the lottery to stay another year. 1/18/2017 6:56:09 AM |

Yeah that's fair and accurate imo. But his minutes have been going down before last night.
^yeah that's true. he missed some fts vs unc too I think. Not so much last night specifically, just pointing out that his minutes have taken a big hit recently. Granted, most of that has to do with Mav coming back. But Mav's had some bad games in this stretch too.1/18/2017 8:47:55 AM |

Rowan at least TRIES on defense. That's more than we've been able to say about half our team before last night's game.
Plus they tried throwing a zone at us, only reason we kept them out of it was Henderson and Rowan knocking down 3's. Small ball will work fairly well, but we're going to face some teams that are going to crush us when we try to run it too much.
We really need good Abu to show back up, the one that was averaging a double-double in ACC play last year. 1/18/2017 10:26:02 AM |

Positives from this game:
1. Yurt finally looked like an impact player. 2. Mav found his 3pt stroke and hit a couple big shots. 3. We won a close game and didn't collapse when we got down 7-8 pts in the 2nd half. 4. The defense was actually solid the final ~8 minutes. 5. Won a game in which DSJ was not good.
Negatives:
1. Our D still sucks. It's insane that every team can hit 40%+ against us from 3. 2. DSJ was pretty bad and continues his up and down trend game to game. 1/18/2017 11:30:01 AM |

And not to take away from yurt's good game. But Pitt is very small, so that's the type of game he should have against an undersized opponent. 1/18/2017 11:56:09 AM |

I can't think of a bigger disappointment in recent memory than BJ. Guys like Scoot and Fells "underperformed" due to their blue chip status, but they were still valuable assets to the team. 1/18/2017 12:14:59 PM |

No he's not transferring. He could be a top 20 if he went pro now. No way he transfers and sits a year.
Scooter underperforming, imo, was more a product of the offensive system. He would've excelled in a more uptempo offense. In hindsight, I'm surprised he didn't transfer. He didn't see a ton of playing time till his senior year, iirc.1/18/2017 3:19:22 PM |

^Totally agree with that. Scoot could have been an All ACC guy somewhere else, but he was neutered by Herb's Princeton offense. Turned him into strictly a 3 and D guy. I always thought Herb's offense made some players who weren't that good look really good (Etimov, Melvin) and it made some players who were really good look average (Scooter, Bethel, even Bennerman to an extent).
Anyway, Mav is such a weapon against zones when he's hitting shots. His release is so fast that the defense can't react fast enough to stop him. Plus he's also great making the extra pass to get other guys good looks. He's pissed me off a lot in the past, but I really liked everything he did last night.

Scooter didn't play early in his career because of defense. Herb didn't play guys who couldn't contribute on defense. He ended up being a really good player for us his senior year, and his ankle injury late in the season (vs UNC if I'm not mistaken) really hurt our postseason chances that year.
And LOL at Rowan passing. Also, any time Anya was in the game we should have be in a zone because he isn't going to guard a guy shooting threes. 1/18/2017 9:51:51 PM |
