I saw Joker on Friday. Wow! Joaquin Phoenix absolutely killed it. He definitely brought his A-game to this one, his performance was nothing short of awesome. I think he absolutely will get an Oscar nod for this and I wouldn't be surprised if he won.

For me, this is what tied this initially kinda boring movie to the Joker as we have known him in the past.

I think yes. The events on the subway were pretty formative.

Same. One of the things I liked about this movie was it was hard to tell what was in his head and what was real. I initially thought the Murray phone call was the former.

Personally, I don't need a protagonist. But that is a common complaint to be sure. I loved American Psycho, but there is nobody to root for there either.

Yes, yes, and no.

It's a comic book movie.

I saw this a few days ago. Not nearly as violent as I expected. Also, not nearly as good as I expected.

I don't view this as a comic book movie. I view it as a movie that has a characters whose origins in comics.

The film was good. Joaquin was amazing and the mood that the film was about to build and carry was great.

I can imagine if someone went to this film expecting a comic book movie or an action based film, then you'd be let down and the film would have failed to deliver in several areas.

I would have liked it more if I knew going in it was a dramatic character study of a crazy person rather than thinking it was a comic book movie somehow.

It was good for what it was though.

I agree with whoever said he came off as plain dumb. But I think this was a crucial element of the story. Movements can form around people without really being derived from the characteristics of that person.

I didn't view Arthur as a dumb individual, rather, I felt that he was (outside of his mental illness) just average and ordinary.

I think synapse mentioned not knowing what's real, but he had that picture of his mom with the inscription by Wayne. I think that was meant to throw the tiniest doubt on the adoption story? Or just that he did have sex with her and dump her but didn't get her pregnant?

Rented it twice and couldn't get through it. Just found it boring, and I wasn't expecting a comic book movie or some crazy action. Generally I like these types of movies but it for some reason just couldn't hold my attention.

I watched it a third time, and I've liked it more each time. I liked the darkness and grit, and the how they use Gotham as a character. Possibly creeping into one of my favorites. Joaquin is so damn good.

and I'm really not in to most comic book movies, Black Panther and Wonder Woman were the last I saw, and while they were okay, I found them pretty boring. (this wasn't a comic book movie)

(I still need to go back and watch King of Comedy, I've seen it a few times, but it's been a decade or two)
