You are right, I don’t think clausen was a bust. I didn’t expect him to be great. To me a bust has to be a player that you give up a lot for and it is a legit surprise they don’t work out. If he were drafted top ten, I’d say that’s a bust — a second round qb pressed into service and flaming out doesn’t surprise me.

Players drafted in the second round, especially the start of the second round, should be serviceable NFL players. Clausen was nowhere close to being good enough to even be on an NFL roster, much less starting at QB. That is a bust.

Also, wasn’t Clausen projected as a very high draft pick? So even if he fell out of the first round, there was obvious hype and expectation around him.

Clausen was overrated from the time he was in high school. So yes.

He wasn't a bust in any way. He just wanted too much money to return after playing out of his mind for one season.

I guess I’m just arguing over nomenclature then — I agree a high second round pick should be serviceable but also I am fully aware that the success rate of a second round pick isn’t guaranteed. So it’s just I guess I consider a bust to be a big whiff instead of a player that should have worked out but didn’t. Like to me a bust sets you back big time in regards of you thought you were set with this player and then oh shit no they suck.

Fair enough, continue on fellows.

Now, on the subject of Clausen, I do think he was more of a college bust because he was so highly rated and was viewed as the savior to finally fix Notre Dame and return them to the promised land, and he did not do that.
