I don't know if I would be upset about that, at this point. With the Mets and the Phils up top, it's like watching a nightmare sometimes.

Yeah but when there isn't much on TV it would be nice to see a team that I like(even if they are sucking) playing a little ball.

Yeah, it's time to start selling. I thought if we came out strong, we could stick it out until the end of the month at least. But losing two out of three to the Nationals right out of the gate is the death knell. Pack it up, so long Tex, Hudson, Glavine, et al.

205 days until pitchers and catchers report.

fyi, you guys are nothing to me now...

Phillies are the bigger rival.

I'm sure you can build a nice little rivalry with the Fish though

I was hoping Renteria would have brought a #3 type starting pitcher, but I doubt anyone is dealing SP."

From page 1. Interesting that the trade has worked out great... I didn't think it was a good one originally but Jurrjens has been one of the Top 10 pitchers in the NL to this point and is a main reason you guys are still in striking distance (though that is being generous)

From DOB's blog:

Couldn’t make this stuff up: Injury in “area” of ulnar collateral ligament. Wren wouldn’t say anything more or characterize severity of injury until after Hudson sees Dr. Andrews this week.

Unbelievable.

Wow, talking about piling on......

done: [/season]

chipper to the DL also.

folks out there are talking tex to the dbacks. wren better draw a hard line and come away with something worthwhile... i'd love to see scherzer headline the return. i like arizona's young team, they are alot like the rays - alot of youth surrounding a few core vets. kotsay and ohman up on the block as well - which is fine with me, they were one and dones anyway.

No idea who the pitching prospects are, so I'll reserve judgment, but Casey Kotchman is about the most boring player in baseball. If this is the real deal, I hope we're getting some world-beater prospects. We gave away a lot to get Tex, I'd hate to see us get nothing in return.

wow, the braves are quickly becoming one of the worst teams in baseball. wren is driving the bus right off the cliff.

i expect him to trade kotsay, ohman, maybe francouer also. although our pitching is shit, we better not trade soriano or gonzo.

We trade the biggest name on the market, the guy we gave up a shit ton to get, for Mr. Vanilla and a 24 year-old with an EqERA around 6.

^^Still two days before the trigger had to be pulled.

^He wasn't a sunk cost, he was the biggest name available. I have a feeling that by midnight on the 31st he'd have commanded more than this crap.

also we are getting a guy locked up till 2011 and he is pretty cheep. this means we still have a lot of money to play around with next year. we can try to sign a big outfielder and a pitcher like c.c. sabathia

I understand what a sunk cost is, I misinterpreted your post. Either way, I think we should have recouped more from the loss of Salty, Andrus, and Harrison. Wren got hosed.

"

you don't pay much attention to this team do you?

but yes, kotchman is cheap, and we have him until '11 or '12. those are the only notable things about him.

i take back what i said earlier about this team becoming one of the worst in baseball, it was a rash comment. HOWEVER, i will say and stand behind the fact that this team is the MOST AVERAGE now.

C: mccann > great, one of the best in the game
1b: kotchman > AVERAGE
2b: johnson > AVERAGE
SS: escobar > AVERAGE
3B: jones > great, but healthy 50% of the time, his replacement > LESS THAN AVERAGE
OF: clusterfuck of doom > BELOW AVERAGE
pitching: outside of JJ, soriano, gonzo, smoltz, hudson and moylan (which, sadly, adds up to only about 4 pitchers), everyone is complete and utter shit.

nobody can convince me this n00b knows what the fuck he's doing. god i wish we still had dayton moore.

WHAT'S UP MOTHER FUCKERS, I'M GONNA TEAR THIS BITCH DOWN FROM THE INSIDE OUT.

"Teixeira is making $12.5 million and will be eligible for free agency after the season. Atlanta general manager Frank Wren said the team was rebuffed in spring training when it offered Teixeira a deal that would have made him "one of the highest-paid players in the game."

There were no further contract discussions between Wren and Teixeira's agent, Scott Boras. With Atlanta plagued by injuries and fading in the NL East, Wren thought he had little choice but to get something of value before losing the 28-year-old Teixeira.

"We offered him a very aggressive, multiyear contract," Wren said. "When he didn't take that, we knew we wouldn't be able to re-sign him.""

that about sums it up. i'm sure there are not a lot of teams in the running willing to pay $12.5 mil for <1/2 season. the Braves have been pretty good historically at getting value with their moves, I think they deserve the benefit of the doubt. but sounds like they're lucky they got anything and didn't lose him to free agency.

i disagree. this week is the time contenders step up and solidify their playoff runs. there were plenty of reports that several teams were interested in tex, including boston, nyy, tampa, laa, lad, arizona. the likelihood of each is debatable, but like ernie said, there were still 2 days left to pit these teams against each other and come away with more.

you also have to consider that when tex walks, that team still gets 2 top draft picks in return. that's worth alot. so you're getting 2 months of tex (more if you count the playoffs) and the 2 picks. plus, said team doesn't pay that 12.5 mil, they pay a fraction of that (prorated for the time they have him). that's really not that much money to pay in return for a shot of adrenaline to your playoff hopes.

^ I disagree about the idea that there was a marker for Tex. Buster Olney did a good report on ESPNews last night and he basically said that no one was truly interested in Tex because most of the teams did not need a 1B or DH.

No doubt we lost way more in getting Tex than what we got in return, but atleast we got someone. Kotchman does have a big upside though and the only reason he's hitting below 300 is because he's been in a big slump. He is a prototype 300, 15 Hrs, 85 RBI guy which is okay for a 1B. Its better than fucking Scott Thorman.

it sounds like Arizona wouldn't give up Jackson and LAA was willing to let Kotchman go. obviously Jackson was the first choice but there wasn't a huge market for Tex and in all likelihood, this was the best deal out ther. That being said, I'm ok with this deal because, as mentioned above, it keeps Thorman from being an everyday player

There has been several positives in the game tonight:

1) Infante is on fire.

2) 5 players with multi-hit games (Infante(3), KJ, Kotsay, Escobar, and Sammons (3))

3) Sammons with 3 rbi

4) Hampton with 2 rbi, and making it through his 2nd start.

5) Frenchy's first 2 at bats were fairly decent looking ( 5 for his last 15).

So, the 2009 Opening Day rotation will look like:

1. Jurrjens (our best pitcher, but not a #1 yet)
2. Reyes (dear god)
3. James (seriously?)
4. Morton ()
5. James Parr?

Cole Rohrbough can't get here fast enough

I don't think we'll go after any big free agent starters like Sabathia, next year has to be a real rebuilding year. Kotsay, Hampton, Smoltz, and Glavine will be gone; who knows when Hudson will be back and who knows what Chipper will have left; it'll probably Cox's last year, too; Francoeur and Johnson should be on the block during the winter. We still have a lot of talent in the minors, but no one that will be a real factor until late next year at the earliest. Wren needs to read Schuerholz's 1989-1991 playbook.

Is it too early to make the 2010 thread?
