see, while i do dream big in the grand scheme of things, i know i'm personally not at the skill level to be selling my own stuff. i also see my father's family, and their horrid history of entrepreneurship, and i want to have some experience in other businesses before diving headfirst into my own (if that does happen).

for me, it's more like ANY job opportunity i have, it would be in nyc or on the west coast. it made no sense to stay home job hunting from afar, but currently, it's just rough being unemployed here. (it's only been a week, but still, it sucks.)

I had an interview last week and 15 minutes in the guy ends the interview because my skillset isn't a good fit for the job. Fair enough - no point wasting our time if it's not a match. (It was a decent fit for the job description but that's another story.)

On the plus side he gave me the name of another director in the company who is looking for someone with my actual experience and education. I'm following up with him this week...

I feel your pain. I've regretted this decision almost from day one. I could have stayed in NC and made nearly the same. I didn't take that job because it was a contract position for one year. In hindsight, that would have been a lot fucking better than looking for a new job after 5 months.

Oh, and what do I tell to my fiancee who I've moved to the worst shit hole in the country for nursing jobs? This website that lists jobs for new RN grads (http://288th.com/) has this to say about New York:

Haha, it was $15/hr, so paycheck to paycheck quite literally. Which makes this a bit rough now. I actually quite like New York (some days). But I couldn't really imagine living in Jersey. I'm in Brooklyn and it's not bad.

But my thing was there is NOTHING in my field in NC. So, I basically took the internship knowing I was going to have to go to NYC or the west coast to find something. And, now, it's pushed into my lap. I'm sort of scared of how I'm gonna afford August once rent rolls around.

Got an HR pre-screen call today. Next steps, hopefully a phone interview, then a trip to Boise for another interview. First contact in months

I have 3 guys already in the company, former colleagues (we were all laid off together), recommending me, so hopefully that should help. If it works out, I'll be off to Idaho within weeks/months!

I knew absolutely nothing about Boise or Idaho, but for some reason, I had it in my head that Idaho is some boring, flat, hillbilly midwestern state or something.... i dunno. I guess I didn't really have any real impression about it, but it still had a negative connotation. That's the reason I didn't interview with the company months ago when they came to our site (after our company announced our closing) and hired 20 people.

But, since then, I've learned that, apparently, Boise is the shit. It's right at the edge of the mountains, it doesn't get too hot in the summer, not too bad in the winter, you can mountain bike literally from downtown and be in the mountains in minutes, you can be snowboarding w/in 15 minutes in winter, etc. All the people I've talked to who moved out there from my old company love it, and every time I mention it, I keep hearing "oohhhh, i grew up in Boise and loved it" from random people. so.... who knew. one of those hidden gems, i guess.

^Dude... I went to Boise for a week in May and it was a freakin blast. I'm doing everything I can to move up there if you like the outdoors, it is an awesome place to be. The general population seemed really laid back and nice - lots of young people since Boise State is there. The green belt (the bike path I think you're talking about) kicks ass as it goes right through the city & is a little over 30 miles round trip. Other places I traveled in Idaho included Sun Valley (excellent skiing in the winter & lots of celebrities have homes there, so it's quite a nice little town) Bruneau (the sand dunes were amazing) and Stanley (we went camping up there and it's gorgeous). Anyway if you have questions about it let me know. Good luck!

I'm an alumni that does campus recruiting for Merck & Co for various engineering and IT positions. Last time I came to NC State for engineering fair, I was surprised at how many of you would decline an opportunity to interview because the jobs are out of state or too far from Raleigh in-state.

Seriously, in a market where there's a 9.5% unemployment rate, I was very surprised at just how many of you would decline a opportunity just b/c it's not within commuting distance of RTP. We have a data center in Charlotte, that was even too far for some! Not only current year's graduate is competing with their own class, but also previous year's graduates.

These are usually $60k+ starting jobs (with a BS) with a Fortune 500.

they moved him to columbia SC for 5 months after graduation, then they moved him to Hagerstown MD for about 8 months, then that sent him to Columbus OH which was supposed to be for an extended time.

but then 6 months after that, they said they had to let him go due to budget cuts

so basically he either had to find a new job in Columbus, or move back to NC while unemployed

Of course, I see your point about Charlotte. That's a little bit ridiculous. But moving out of state should be considered carefully.

relocating means...
-you're most likely moving to a higher cost of living (raleigh is fairly cheap)
-there will probably be a salary difference, but not enough to cover the increase
-unless you already know people, you'll have no contacts
-oh, so you went to UNC? :facepalm:, I'm now wondering if I should list NCSU rankings on resumes/cover letters.
-you could be moving to a place with fewer jobs AND more competition in your field than the place you left
-if you have an SO, you could be moving them to a place with fewer jobs AND more competition in their field than in the place you both left
-you probably won't find a subletter even after sweetening the pot as much as possible. you certainly can't trust the complex to lift a finger (the money is already in their pocket). In fact, don't even trust them to send you the security deposit. "oh, we didn't have a return address". I see. I guess the address written on the last 5 checks I wrote you for rent for the apartment I'm not living in isn't fucking clear enough.

Now, if this were five years down the road, no problem. I could relocate without worry.
-With experience, I'd actually have a shot of picking up another job in rough times.
-I'd have at least six months saved up giving me the option for another extended job search OR relocating back to where I came from.

these are just some things to consider. relocating might be the best option for some, but I wouldn't say it's a no brainer.

^^ buried in that post are real concerns, but the overall spirit of that post is irrational fear. Several of those concerns can be addressed through basic research (cost of living, job market for you and SO) and some are stupid (UNC thing, deposit, subletting).

Furthermore, none of those are reasons you should not even try to look in the first place -- after all, you can find a job that does pay enough, will make moving easy by paying relocation expenses, and will be in an interesting place. You have to be really scared or self-doubting to rule out even trying.

relocating straight out of college isn't necessarily a bad thing. I actually was able to relocated to an area where cost of living is cheaper than raleigh and with better salary on top of that. I guess it's just depend on your line of work.

I have a question about unemployment benefits.


I was laid off from the company I was working for in Chicago back in May. I moved back to NC after my layoff and am receiving unemployment from Illinois.

I got offered a temp 3-4 week job in NC. Will I be able to refile my unemployment claim with Illinois at the end of this job? Or will I basically be SOL on the unemployment benefits?

this is what ive been doing.

dont file anything for those 4 weeks. Dont even go on the website and answer the questions.

when the temp position is done they will ask you why you havent filed for unemployment and then you answer two questions. Was it self unemployment and why were you let go.

just say you were laid off for lake of work and keep on getting money. They will send you a form you have to fill out and they will send it to the company to confirm.

however the out of state thing might be funky.

ive been doing this for 8 months and Im still getting the unemployment when I need it when I cant get temp work.

After having little success in finding something in my field after graduation (one interview got very far, really thought I was gonna get offered, then the company decided not to fill the position, got a few phone interviews and got some contacts out of it), I turned to my old standbys for a job just for income. Put in an application to NC Temporary Solutions, and got placed within a week - also had to pick between three different jobs. Finally, monies!

EDIT: The position I picked is pretty much permanent - the contract is for the max period with Temp Solutions, 11 months with a 32 day wait period afterward and then starts right back up again.
