im getting the error "the directory is not empty" when trying to delete the windows.old folder since i migrated all my stuff over and don't need any of those programs, should have just done a clean install but oh well

until Forefront comes out, you will want AV.

ESET is the only one I remotely like for Win7, and I literally tried every single option out there during the beta. Very little resource usage, keeps updated, inexpensive and has caught several things I would have otherwise been infected by (just from regular internet browsing and email).

well i know plenty of people with several anti-virus and/or anti-spyware tools installed whose computers i've had to clean up. i've never been asked by somebody who decided not to use anti-virus to clean up their PC.

you're right, i could easily have thousands of viruses infecting my computers and i could not know it. but you can just as easily say "you don't know what you don't know" to somebody with or without AV.

I had a lot of issues with AVG Free, and AVG Pro during Beta/RC. Performance lags, too much micromanagement, infrequent updates, and it didn't like the computer being in sleep mode.

Installed RTM on a friend's Dell Mini w/ 1 GB RAM and an 8 GB SSD. Working flawlessly. Also installed Eset Smart Security, which is nice and light.

Mines working great on my dell 1420, except the sound driver. It keeps telling me that Im installing it correctly and that it was a success, but I get no sound? Not sure what the deal is there, but the OS itself is pretty spiffy. Just running a basid 7/avira/pg2 at the moment. Very smooth.

I don't know if anybody else is having this problem but whenever i'm playing a video on win 7 either with media player or gom player, it randomly freezes for up to 20 secs and then resumes. I thought it was the 8600m gt nvidia since i've read that it had a defect in it. But i've reformatted it and put vista on it and now it's playing without any problems. I used the win 7 rc and rtm and both froze while playing videos so theres nothing wrong with my copies. Perhaps it was the driver but dell doesn't have the win 7 drivers for the 8600m gt on their site so I used the latest copy from nvidia website. Any suggestions?

btw just in case anyone wanted to know, windows 7 with avg running very well on a nettop - zotac ion mobo with intel atom 330. overclocked the FSB beautifully and easily too. if anyone wants to know the parts i ordered, it was pretty cheap and literally makes NO noise at all (fanless).

I'm not so eager to do a clean install at the moment, but if the OS and apps will be snappier on the level of a processor upgrade, I'd consider it.

You might see more RAM - how much does xp 32 report? Run the System Information tool and see what it says for physical memory.

3.5 is max for 32 bit windows systems. I have "heard" it can use more than that sometimes but i don't think its possible.

Main issue with 64-bit is addresses obv take up more memory, so the gains are negligible with 4 GB of RAM.

Better to go with 6 or 8 GB on 64-bit; 6 GB particularly if you're using an intel core i7 cpu to take full advantage of triple-channel DDR3.

On the plus side, 64-bit is more secure -- one reason being it requires signed drivers. There is more to it, but that's the height of my knowledge on the subject : p

ok more of mozilla bug probably but it won't save ANY passwords or forms in firefox even when i have it enabled in preferences and i have a master password set, it used to pop up and ask for the password whenever i went to a site that required it and stay logged in as long as that firefox window was open but its not saving/asking anything

^windows search uses look ahead.

As soon as you type the first letter it goes searching, and continues to filter as you type. You don't have to "start over", just hit backspace once.

doesn't work.

backspace just takes me back to the control panel before it processed the first letter. i can do that, then hit ctrl+f again, then type again, and it works fine.

the filtering after each letter works fine, it's the fact that i can't type more than one letter (the first time) without it making my cursor disappear--for lack of a better way to describe it.

after hitting ctrl+f a second time it works as it should and filters after each letter if i type slow or after a couple of letters if i type fast and lets me keep typing. very strange.
