Springsteen is a clear influence on the band. An influence--it doesn't define them if they're influenced by Springsteen. It's not as if they sound exactly like the E-Street Band.
Nobody's going to create a new breed of music out of thin air. I have no problem with them drawing heavily from a source. And I don't even know if they draw THAT heavily from Springsteen.

My biggest thing on those two songs is the vocal delivery. He's actively changing his timbre to a squeezy Springsteen type of singing. That's fine, I'd just rather not hear it out of them very often.
When I first heard "Antichrist Television Blues" (which is a fantastic song), I immediately heard Springsteen. I hear the same thing on "Month of May," though the song's not nearly as good.
Of course there's nothing wrong with drawing heavily on influences, I just hope they don't get preoccupied with sounding like '80s Springsteen because their sound is better when they don't. 5/28/2010 3:48:12 PM |

I really don't think the Arcade Fire is sitting around listening Springsteen records and asking themselves, "What do we need to do to sound like this?" I don't think they do that and I'd doubt they would. That said, Springsteen has influenced the music they have made and will probably continue to do so, but I don't think he's any more an influence on them than say, Talking Heads or Bowie. It's just the sound they've come up with for themselves. They're not TRYING to sound like anybody, necessarily; that's just the nature of artistic influences. And I don't think they're anywhere NEAR in danger of becoming any E-Street band ripoff or anything. 5/28/2010 4:21:21 PM |

I don't hear Springsteen at all in "the suburbs" the way I did in "anti-christ television blues" and several other songs on Neon Bible. I don't hear it as pronounced on "month of may" the way I did "antichrist", either.
On "the suburbs", I hear much more of a Neil Young sound in his vocals. When I first heard it I thought, "okay, Bowie for Funeral, Springsteen for Neon Bible and Neil Young for this this one". But, then I heard "month of may" and my theory was shot to shit...... well, until August 2nd anyway.
Also for Ryan Adams fans, Orion has leaked and it is just awful. 5/28/2010 6:48:33 PM |

^ gotcha
and, re: Ryan Adams --- I knew going in this was supposed to be a "metal record", so I wasn't expecting much, but it's so terrible I thought maybe he was pulling a Van Morrison and putting out a horrendous contractual obligation record of some sort. 5/28/2010 7:12:24 PM |

If you heard "Electrosnake" before Orion's release, you'd know what to expect.

yeah, I definitely didn't see that.
I knew what to expect in general terms, but it's not even a good attempt at a metal record. It's a scatterbrained shit fest that feels more like an inside joke than anything else. 5/28/2010 7:31:08 PM |

The last couple of nights I've been listening to these Arcade Fire songs thinking "I really like both of these, but wow I find it hard to believe they would allow such incredibly shitty production." Now I realize I've been listening to the radio rips. Just got the rips from the vinyl... 1000% improvement. 5/30/2010 12:51:12 AM |

^x5, ^x3 lol...you can't just download something off the internet and upload it to what.cd to fill a bounty. 99% of the stuff on what comes straight from a CD because people are super-anal about sound quality there. you're not going to get yelled at for trying to share shit, but you might get yelled at by a what mod for uploading a transcode (meaning it's already been passed around; not a rip straight from a high quality CD), but it's def not that big a deal. 6/1/2010 9:14:49 PM |

Everytime you burn a cd with mp3s, they are compressed more so the quality goes down. So if you ripped the album from a burnt cd, it's gonna be a transcode. 6/2/2010 12:35:32 AM |

well, he's good (ibt vinylbandit saying he can't take Drake seriously b/c he was Wheelchair Jimmy), but he really only has 1 flow, and his songs have damn near all been about the same thing. So, yeah, his first mixtape was surprisingly good, but since then, my enjoyment of his music has waned. Still a pretty good album though. The song with Jay-Z "Light it up" is a beast. 6/2/2010 4:30:53 PM |

our last EP from 2007 just shot up from like 100,000th place last time I checked on Amazon to 4,900 this week in mp3 sales
I think the highest we ever were was like ~2,000 the year it came out. For reference, BTBAM's latest album from 2009 is at 15,000. I'm not sure if there was an error or what happened to cause this spike. I need to get in touch with the label
