i find it funny how long this thread has been dormant given the amount of news around wikileaks (swiss banking, splintering of the organization, bankruptcy, massive spending by wikileaks, etc)
it just goes to show that people don't really care for wikileaks or believe in their mission - they just like taking shots at the military and governmental leaders they don't like.
julian and wikileaks just happened to be a convenient vehicle to rally around when they needed something to pin their outrage to that could give a semblance of validity to their rants

All European nations refuse to extradite prisoners to barbaric countries that slay the condemned, so at least the US will have to promise not to execute him in order to get Sweden to hand him over. Of course the US could always change its mind once they have him, and our prisons can be worse than death. Either way Assange is fucked. His best bet is suicide while it's still possible, the only relief possible from tyrannical governments other than revolution. 2/24/2011 6:47:03 PM |

The media didn't drop the ball they actively contributed to government corruption. Just because wikileaks attempted to do something that I agree with doesn't mean I support what they are. Hell I imagine even sarah palin has done something in her life I agree with however I still think she is an ignorant piece of shit.

Anonymous is planning attacks on anyone involved in Manning's arrest and detention, including an anti-military PR campaign.
The military has announced that Manning's clothes will be taken every night from now on. This is the same torture used on prisoners of Abu Ghraib.

Their reasoning for taking off his clothes as a "suicide prevention" technique is ridiculous in and of itself. No one should be treated so poorly that they are at high risk of committing suicide, especially someone who has not been fucking convicted of anything. 3/5/2011 12:37:54 PM |

It all makes me very sad.
There will be no revolution. There will be no protests. The public craves executions like this. He will die like the rosenbergs, and the people will cheer. The wars will continue. The abuse will spread to other citizens. We've already missed our opportunity to change course. Politics offers no way to change our path. The tea party was the only movement that even suggested reigning in the military, and it has failed.
There is nothing I can do to help him. 3/5/2011 6:14:14 PM |

^ US media assisting the government in discrediting wikileaks (denying that wikileaks offered the government a chance to redact documents to protect national security however the US media was actually the intermediary for this exchange), obfuscating information revealed by wikileaks (NYT missile story omitting key information) in order to promote an environment of fear and misunderstanding, Sweden acting as a US lapdog in order to discredit, capture and deliver Assange, and finally Bradley Mannings possible mistreatment.
All of these things are fairly indicative of a government with a scary level of influence and indicate that high level corruption could be a serious issue for the government.
Do you think anyone would have any interest in exposing further government corruption after witnessing this? Whistleblowing in the US government has been effectively stopped by trumpeting the cause of "national security". 3/8/2011 12:24:27 PM |

I'm not sure this is a reasonable assessment of suicide prevention in general. You don't have to be treated exceptionally badly in jail or prison to want to off yourself. Shit, I've got a relative who had to be put on it a few times, and he only had to go in on the weekends.3/8/2011 5:48:41 PM |

Just saw this for whatever reason. My relative -- who I probably know better than you know Manning -- also showed no signs of being suicidal before incarceration. My only point was that being in any jail environment is going to seriously ratchet up the stress level. For some people that will put them over the edge.
I've no idea whether Manning is suicidal. They may just be fucking with him. But it does not follow that he could only become suicidal if they were treating him especially badly.4/25/2011 3:09:32 PM |

Considering that prison psychiatrists, Manning himself, and Manning's lawyer all acknowledge that he wasn't a danger to himself I think the evidence is pretty damning.
Quote : | "Sixteen separate entries made from 27 August until the records stop on 28 January show that Manning was evaluated by prison psychiatrists who found he was not a danger to himself and should be removed from the PoI order." |
Quote : | " Manning writes that he believes the suicide watch was imposed not because he was a danger to himself but as retribution for a protest about his treatment held outside Quantico the day before. Immediately before the suicide watch started, he said guards verbally harassed him, taunting him with conflicting orders." |
Really sounds like the guards were concerned with his welfare doesn't it?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/mar/11/stripped-naked-bradley-manning-prison
I can't believe anyone is still attempting to defend how Manning is being treated. Fucking ridiculous.
^ The fact that your relative had to be put on suicide watch has NO BEARING on this situation. The evidence presented pretty clearly shows that Bradley Manning was put on suicide watch in order to torture not because he was suicidal (even the prison psychiatrists agree). Your relative was put on suicide watch because there was evidence that he was suicidal.

You seem to think I'm saying, "Well my relative was on suicide watch so clearly Manning is suicidal." No.
My original point to that was and is that a person who is put in jail or prison doesn't have to be treated so badly to be at risk of committing suicide. My clarifying point earlier today was that you also don't have to have a previously demonstrated risk of suicidal behavior. It turns out that a sane person put into normal prison environments might begin legitimate suicidal behavior.

While I'm glad to hear that, I must confess that comment related specifically to McDanger and comments that he's previously made regarding the death penalty. These ended up taking a tack that we should use bad people for medical research to figure out why they're bad. (Although he might call that a gross characterization.
