I need a little feedback on some things I want to do.
I'm implementing an anti-dupe/hack system today. The only feature I'm undecided on is the anti- durability glitch mod. It basically makes it so when you drop tools/swords/etc they disappear. So you actually need to craft tools.
I'm also looking at putting in some cool minecart features once notch fixes the chunk loading issue. It makes things like gold, obsidian, and gravel legitimately useful. I could get minecarts/boats working now with the new anti-hack system, but there would still be crashes at chunk boundaries, which would be annoying.
We've been musing on the idea of adding some sort of economy to the server. Once I get the inventory/item hacks patched (mostly), and clear out the already duped items, it will be craft/mine only with the exception of unobtainable items. After the system is set up I'm banning anyone caught duping/hacking. I had hoped with a closed community it wouldn't be an issue, but apparently I was wrong.
Back to the economy, there is a mod out now that adds intangible currency and auctions to the game. This is fairly useful on it's own, but with the limited number of people on the server it won't help too much. There is another mod being developed that adds NPCs and questing, and should soon integrate with the economy mod. This will allow me to setup NPC shops to purchase items, as well as a good way of doing quests/public works for rewards. I think it's a cool idea, but I want some feedback on it.
The last thing I'm considering right now is adding PvE/PvP to the server. I haven't really seen how it works, but there are mods to implement these features. It could be fun, or it could suck. If you want to try it let me know.
Also need to work on switching the server over to MySQL from flatfile. The player database should be easy enough, but some of the mods might go a little screwy while I work on it. Bear with me.
Thanks for the feedback, and if anyone has suggestions or ideas let me know.

I think the less mod's the better, just for your sanity. Otherwise, it will be a constant struggle for you... Notch has stated he is "against" mods, and every mod has the chance to break at every update. That said, if you don't mind (enjoy?) constant piddling the more features the better!
I didn't realize dupe/hacks were frowned upon (when obviously the main city and road materials weren't mined). First I've heard of it. Will honer it from now on. The mod is certainly a good idea to "keep honest man honest".
Minecarts/boats, Economy, PvE, PVP all sound very intriguing.
PvE certainly makes the game seem "more real"... and I love building monster traps. Is TNT enabled once you can harvest gun powder from mobs?
PvP especially sounds awesome-- I always thought a Capture the flag / Fort Wars thingy would rock in this game... although with PvP I think it would be good to have zones where you can opt-in (else greifing will be an issue). Also, I would think you would need "faction zones". We'd probably need a lot more people before this became fun though.
What is the name of the economy mod?

I love the idea about NPC shops and economy/questing.
PVP sounds pretty cool too. 11/15/2010 10:23:01 AM |

This is the only one i really have an opinion on, and I wouldn't like this one. It's already ridiculously time consuming to build anything large, and having to remake tools that dont stack over and over again really doesnt add anything to the game at all.
I wouldn't be in favor of this one. Plus, I can't count how many times ive accidentally hit Q instead of 1 or 2 when trying to swtich tools.11/15/2010 10:51:37 AM |

You missed the part where he made 7 million dollars using his "crappy" graphics
I don't know what fantasy land you live in where someone comes along in a weekend and knocks notch out of the water with marginally improved graphics. Those there: they are tech demos, not games. Notch has been working on minecraft for a year and a half.

^, ^^, ^^^ - I was leaning towards that anyway. It's not really game-breaking, and is more convenient.
--
^x5 - notch isn't against serverside mods, he's against mods that alter the game-client code. He clarified that on his blog. Most of these mods aren't hard to keep running once the initial setup is done. I also steer clear of any that cause lag. If you have another reason for not liking mods, let me know so I can take it into consideration.
I thought anything that required some sort of glitching technique would be obviously frowned upon. The central city and roads were done with spawned materials by the admins for the whole community. Any community oriented projects will have materials supplied, but personal projects should be legitimate. If you need something you can't normally get then ask for it. We plan on giving people support if they support the community, be it through helping with projects or unique ideas. Hopefully shops/economy will make it easier to obtain materials anyway.
TNT will remain off until a better way of controlling it comes out. It really isn't THAT useful, and has way too much potential for abuse. I would like to think that wouldn't be an issue, but I've learned not to underestimate how shitty people can be.
There is another mod I could implement that adds king of the hill and capture and hold minigames, both PvP oriented. There's a huge one that involved owned towns and such, but I don't think we have enough people to make that worthwhile.
The economy mod I'm looking at is iConomy. It actually has "sign" shops already, so I may go ahead and implement it before the NPC mod is ready for release.
---
Thanks for the feedback, keep it coming! If you see something cool on forums/another server that you think would be nice to have let me know, I'll consider anything put forward.

Notch is just a fat dude in his basement. Any decent development team could duplicate and surpass his efforts in a couple weeks as long as the engine was already built. Besides, notch implements stupid things. Skeletons that shoot arrows? Chopping wood with your hands? Can't scoop moving water? What sense does that make? And don't even get me started on redstone...too much stupid there to even comprehend.
I'd like to see a true voxel survival game with crazy animals and such that come out to eat you at night. Kind of a land of the lost vibe. Something to really trigger those mammalian instincts. 11/15/2010 12:01:59 PM |

My two cents on the duping thing.
There were structures built in town center that were not mined. I can understand using free resources for roads and the town center layout but building any structure with out mining and then frowning upon duping is sorta hypocritical. Mods built there houses or whatever without mining. Also, this rule should be posted in the rules area in the town center before enforcing.

Didn't make the edit.
So I have a 4 x 2 painting I want to place but can't. It looks like the painting selection is random, but I never get my 4 x 2. Is the only way to get it to destroy a painting and keep reapplying until it makes the random selection?
Also, any restrictions on the dimensions? Like 2 x 5, 1 x 6, etc.?
EDIT: So there are restrictions on the dimensions. If I want a 5x2 I'd have to make a 4x2 and span the image over to a 2x1.
Still it's hard to get a 4x2 to be selected.

^^ Yeah, you have to keep destroying/replacing. There's no method of specifying right now. That being said ^ is right. Paintings don't show up for anyone else in multiplayer, and will disappear after a server restart. Netstorm found that out the hard way with his art gallery.
Also, the map has been updated. I'm curious as to what the hell the obsidian/lava structure northeast of the spawn is... and how someone got that much obsidian/lava to begin with. Seems like a lot of effort. 11/16/2010 1:24:07 PM |

Blocks reappearing should be mostly fixed. It's a temporary solution that may cause some minor bugs with item drops, but I'll keep it updated so the interference should be minimal. I'd rather have a few minor things than that annoying bug. Also hoping to have the economy/shop system set up before long. I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it.

So I started back up after some time off, updated to 1.2.2 and I noticed that snow no longer falls in my pre-existing snow map. Is that normal? Would I have to create a new map to get snow back?
EDIT: Created a new map and walked until I hit some snow. It wasn't snowing there either. You dig up the snow and it's permanently gone. Kinda lame, the snow biomes can just be dug up and then they aren't snow biomes anymore.
I'm guessing it's not just me and that this is a work in progress then.

Apparently there is a team developing a C++ Server. From early reports it appears to have most of the functionality of the official server implemented, with some slight differences. The big news is that it uses a quarter of the resources of the Java based server, and runs much more smoothly; even at this early stage. Assuming they release an API soon a lot of the popular mods will probably be ported. Here's hoping they keep it up. 11/17/2010 1:50:26 PM |
