i mean, i was 99% sure clausen was going to suck balls

im only like 60% sure newton will

and the sentiment that even if he does suck, it'll be a more entertaining flavor of suck is on the right track

so fuck it, lets go

lots of people compare him to Roethlisberger

good to see he won't be flying through downtown at 70mph on that liquorcycle

at least Roethlisberger learned through trial and error that helmets are a good thing, not just between the feet decorations like some people

that's probably close to what he looked like after crashing face-first into a windshield

also, came across this gem with a google image search for "roethlisberger motorcycle accident":

I'm interested in getting a few tickets to the GB game on the 18th (if there is a season). I've never bought panther tickets before, can I just buy them on their website? Any idea of face value for decent seats?

^^what is decent to you? i believe face value for most upper level seats is around 65-75

Stupid Fuck

Quote :
"If the sources talking to Brad Briggs of the National Football Post are correct, Ryan Mallett’s draft stock could soon take a serious hit. Briggs says the Arkansas quarterback skipped a pre-draft meeting with the Panthers earR. Mallett (US Presswire)lier this month after a night out on the town in Charlotte.

Mallett reportedly arrived in town April 8 and met team officials for a dinner that night. There were supposed to be meetings the next day at Bank of America Stadium but they were cancelled after Mallett called the team saying he was sick. The problem? Sources say Mallett was seen out on the town following the late dinner.

Earlier this week there were reports that Mallett had admitted to teams that he has used drugs in the past. Questions about rumored failed drug tests and character concerns have dogged the talented pocket passer throughout the 2011 draft process.

UPDATE 12:40 p.m. EST:
Briggs isn't the only one reporting this. Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer says league sources tell him Mallett skipped a meeting with GM Marty Hurney"

his agent says he really was sick (of course) and that he was in his hotel room by 10pm that night. he added that Mallett met with Chudzinski in the morning but was too sick to continue the day's meetings.

i'll believe reporters over an agent who represents a player's best interests any day. what agent would say "yeah, he was drunk as shit and smoking blunts all night."?

maybe the Panthers don't want Newton? who the hell knows, but i liked reading this article because i don't want Cam Newton anywhere near BofA Stadium

http://www.cbssports.com/#!/nfl/story/14991408/panthers-passing-on-newton-or-just-blowing-smoke

Quote :
"Based on what I heard this past weekend, there's a growing skepticism among NFL coaches, GMs and scouts that Carolina chooses quarterback Cam Newton with its first draft choice.

Yeah, I know, never trust anything you hear in the week prior to the draft. I usually subscribe to that axiom. Only it seems as if there are so many people convinced that Carolina goes in another direction that I'm beginning to wonder where the Panthers go with their first pick Thursday.

The arguments are familiar. Only now you hear them everywhere:

• Carolina wouldn't spend its first pick on a quarterback this year because it spent its first pick last year on the same position. Besides, the Panthers have a raft of other needs.

• Button-downed owner Jerry Richardson might not endorse the flamboyant and outspoken Newton, the subject of an NCAA investigation and the guy who said he wants to be the NFL's next "icon" and "entertainer."

• Newton is a risky choice in a spot where you don't take chances.

• The Panthers just hired a defensive-minded head coach who takes over a club that ranked 26th in points allowed and last in point-differential and who, at his introductory news conference, said, "I want to get back to tackling."

That sounds like someone who might be more interested in Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus or Texas A&M linebacker Von Miller than a quarterback.

Furthermore, one scout I trust told me Carolina was desperate to trade out of the top spot, hoping to acquire the second-round draft pick it doesn't have, saying he heard the Panthers "want to deal out of that spot and want it bad." Pardon me, but that doesn't sound like someone that is fixed on Cam Newton.

The problem is that there's no consensus on Newton: You either like him, or you don't, and there are a lot of people out there who don't. The only question, of course, is whether Carolina is sold on him, and I wish I could tell you. I can't. But I can tell you I know plenty of NFL execs and coaches who think the Panthers don't pull the trigger.

I keep hearing them question if Richardson would sign off on the deal, especially after Carolina spent its first pick last year on quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Now, let's be honest: Clausen stunk. But so did the rest of the team. Plus, he was playing with a shuffled offensive line, rookie receivers and a club that sank faster than the Lusitania.

"Funny thing," said one NFC general manager, "but Richardson might be OK with Newton because he could be looking at 40,000 empty seats. If he thinks he (Newton) can put people in the stands, he might push for him. But he would have to swallow hard."

Drafting Newton would be an admission after only one season that Clausen is a bust, and nobody is convinced that Carolina GM Marty Hurney is willing to do that. Not yet. More to the point, they say Hurney is one of Clausen's supporters.

But there's a new head coach in town, and that's former San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. Having been in the same locker room with Philip Rivers the past four seasons, he knows the value of a franchise quarterback. But the Chargers had a conviction about Rivers when they acquired him. A growing number of people believe Carolina lacks a similar conviction about Newton.

If so, it's understandable: Newton had one season of success at the Division 1-A level. Granted, it was an extraordinary season, with undefeated Auburn winning the national championship, but let the record show that he threw 280 passes at the major-college level (two years at Florida; one at Auburn), compared to Blaine Gabbert's 933, Tim Tebow's 995 and Sam Bradford's 893.

Let the record also show that he ran 285 times -- or more than he threw. In Newton's Heisman Trophy-winning season he averaged 20 passes a game and 18.9 rushes per contest, and that won't ... can't ... continue in the pros, where he will face bigger, stronger and faster defensive linemen.

"I'll tell you what scares me and what should scare Carolina," said one coach Sunday evening, "and that's that (Newton) never really developed past the 'JC' (junior college) level in terms of football knowledge. At Auburn, they let him do what he wanted to do. And that's because, athletically, the guy is a Hall of Famer. But in terms of what he knows about the game and how he plays it he's still at a junior-college level."

Translation: He's not ready to step into the NFL and play immediately, and that's not what's supposed to happen to No. 1-draft picks. I know, Cincinnati did it with Carson Palmer, but the Bengals are the exception. The Bengals also had Jon Kitna as a safety net and a mentor for Palmer. The Panthers have no such veteran.

"If you're asking me," said one scout, "I don't believe they take him."

I'm not sure. Let's put it another way: I'm less sure now than I was last week. "

then two years later, they make a playoff push and go to the Super Bowl, and everyone has loved them all along

I can understand peoples frustrations this time around...making bad decisions in an effort to get better is much more acceptable than the garbage richardson pulled last year

it's a little more complicated than that because of the uncertain labor situation last offseason, but i hear ya...2-14 is awful and i feel like Richardson should have gotten rid of Fox instead of making him a lame duck head coach. i feel that Fox threw in the towel.

Panties are spreading rumors about Newton to get one of the suckers (read: Redskins, Raiders) to trade up for him. Ideally they trade the pick.

If not, Steve Smith to Cincy for Carson Palmer and Dareus with the #1 pick.

If I'm not mistaken, I heard a day or two ago that because of the lockout, teams can only trade pick for pick...so no trading the number 1 pick for another pick plus a player.

He asked to be traded. Does he have a no-trade clause letting him pick which teams he can go to?

If not, who cares if he wants to go to Cincy.

I figured he wants out of here because he's got Clausen underthrowing him all the time. I'm saying who is gonna throw him the ball in Cincinnati if Palmer isn't there.

And while I was a big fan of Palmer about 5 years ago, he's really shut the bed the last few seasons and has never been able to fully come back from injury. Plus he might just retire at any given moment (based on his comments a couple months ago)

I don't want Palmer as any type of long term solution

^^ Gotcha - I was hoping that Palmer was a product of gong show coaching, and we can pick him up at a low price.

Would love to make a run at Kolb, not sure what we could offer Philly though (besides draft picks, which we do like to throw around like $1 bills at Pure Gold)

until the "stay" is resolved, no players can be traded yet. it's also unlikely that this will be resolved by thursday unless judge nelson gives more specific verbiage in regards to her ruling on lifting the lockout.

so for now, picks are all that can be traded. according to draft pick value charts, for a team to move up to #1 without trading a player, they would have to trade almost all of their top value draft picks. (a la Saints going for Ricky Williams). i can't see any can't miss player that a team would be willing to give up so much for.

this will explain it all better than i ever possibly could:

here's a link to draft value charts that teams use to determine value when trading picks

http://www.draftcountdown.com/features/Value-Chart.php

not sure how familiar people are with this...since right now players cannot be traded, you would have to equal the 3,000 point value for the #1 pick with an assortment of draft picks in order to move up, which looks unlikely at this point

Pretty much how I feel too. I did a complete face palm when we drafted the fuck up Clausen. I don't feel near as bad about Newton just for the potential hype. Clausen was just a high potential train wreck that is still crashing.

I was extremely disappointed when Carolina took Clausen when McCoy was still on the board. I felt like that kid was a winner and despite his lack of height would have been a much better choice as evident by at least looking fairly good in Cleveland.

i'm skeptical of people saying that clausen was a sure bust while also saying newton will be better. besides douchey photos online, what exactly led you to believe he'd suck? he played in a pro-style offense and put up awesome numbers.
