Since my sports med thread is too old I'll just post it in here.

The scaphoid bone is the most proximal and lateral carpal bone. It is the most common wrist bone that is fractured, and can cause a lot of pain and swelling just behind the thumb.

Scaphoid fracture



Avascular necrosis (AVN) (essentially bone death from a disruption of the blood supply to the bone) is a common complication of a scaphoid fracture. Risk of AVN depends on the location of the fracture.

- Fractures in the proximal 1/3 have a high incidence of AVN (~30%)
- Waist fractures in the middle 1/3 is the most frequent fracture site and has moderate risk of AVN.
- Fractures in the distal 1/3 are rarely complicated by AVN.

Non-union (bone fragments not healing together) can also occur from undiagnosed or undertreated scaphoid fractures.

I think UNC can beat USF or Ohio without Marshall, but not Kansas or NC State. Unlucky for NC State to be facing Kansas or Purdue at this point and not UNC. With the momentum we have and the injuries they have we might even have been the favorite by the odds makers.
