Atlanta is the perfect match-up for Seattle.
1) Atlanta is one of the worst rushing offenses in the league so they won't be able to run the ball against Seattle at all (which despite what you saw today is an above average unit).
2) Atlanta relies on the passing game (though it's not GREAT) and Seattle has one of the best pass rushes in the league and a top notch secondary. Seattle can really get after you and if Atlanta is forced to abandon the run early that just makes it easier to get pressure on Ryan.
3) Atlanta's defense is very susceptible against the run (not TERRIBLE, but certainly below average) and Seattle has the best rushing attack in the league. Seattle also has one of the more efficient passing games in the league so they can throw the ball too if Atlanta tries to cheat too much against the run. 1/6/2013 9:22:58 PM |

It will be a travesty of justice if they give it to Luck. I can understand the argument for RGIII but the last month owned by RW. 1/6/2013 9:33:58 PM |

LOL, Luck got exposed today against a very average Ravens defense. He couldn't do shit.
59 passer rating and 5 yards per pass.
I think he's going to end up being a great QB but he was obviously the least NFL ready of the three. 1/6/2013 9:47:12 PM |

FUCK. Chris Clemons, seattle top DE is out for season.
Luckily they have Bruce Irvin their first round pick. He's a pretty bad ass pass rusher himself, but can't play the run. Shouldn't matter too much vs Atlanta or green bay but that's huge against san fran if they play them 1/7/2013 10:44:04 AM |

I dont' get the TOB hate. He obviously thought RW could make it in the NFL and needed to concentrate on football - not miss 2 years of spring practice failing in baseball. I guess you could say RW proved TOB right. 1/7/2013 2:50:24 PM |
Lionheart I'm Eggscellent 12775 Posts user info edit post |
Oh believe me of all the things to blame TOB for I don't really hold the RW situation against him. I would have taken Russell back in a heartbeat but I understand the decision. Its a rational argument that didn't work out terribly from a football standpoint (I'd argue that RW was probably worth 1 more win the year we would have had him). Strictly from a PR/prestige it really hurts us in that he's a pro that everyone associates with Wisconsin but its not like anyone realistically believed he'd be a rookie starter in the NFL. I don't think you can hold that against TOB. 1/7/2013 2:57:44 PM |

yeah no sense throwing a body block in that situation, just make enough contact to keep the defenders balance in the opposite direction of lynch.
also, that could have been a block in the back. 1/8/2013 1:39:16 PM |

Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think it's considered a block in the back if both players are going the same direction as the play. 1/8/2013 3:28:40 PM |

That could have been a bitb? He was coming at the defender from the side with the defender actually facing him.
I guess a pissy ref might have called that, but it would seem pretty unreasonable. 1/8/2013 4:57:52 PM |

^^ So there is no way to block a player who is attempting to take an angle on a runner unless you are in front of him? I'm just saying you see bitb on non-return plays about once per season. 1/8/2013 5:00:45 PM |

It didn't look bad from that field-level angle. Looked like Wilson was setup to block the redskins player legally the whole time, and the redskins player got out of the way at the last second. 1/8/2013 6:35:24 PM |

The NFL rulebook defines a block in the back as:
Quote : | "...a block that is delivered from behind an opponent above his waist. It is not a block in the back:
(a) if the opponent turns away from the blocker, or (b) if both of the blocker's hands are on the opponents side." |
So, yeah, that was technically a block in the back and could've drawn a flag. It would have been a shitty, ticky-tack foul that a lot of people would have bitched about, but it could've been called nonetheless.

My interpretation is that Russell Wilson misjudged the angle and couldn't have done anything other than hit Josh Wilson (#26) in the back. He realized that and didn't really try to throw much of a block. And Josh Wilson wasn't turning away so much as getting low in anticipation of contact.
Having said that, even as a huge Redskins fan, I'm fine with there having been no flag on the play. Josh Wilson wasn't going to be making that play, minimal contact from RW or not. There were a couple of no calls on some obvious holds on Kerrigan that I was upset about at the time, but overall I think it was a pretty well-officiated game. 1/8/2013 8:06:45 PM |
wstcoastwolf All American 1642 Posts user info edit post |
The defender just dipped his shoulder to keep outside leverage which is why Russell, who is not used to blocking, pretty much whiffed. Not a block in the back 1/8/2013 8:25:46 PM |
