Rough start by Beachy, but thank God for the bats coming alive. Beachy is not ready to pitch in the bigs right now, but the Braves had to see what he could give them. I'm sure Wren is doing everything he can right now to find another starter that can eat some innings. Not much out there, Jake Peavy makes the most sense. 7/30/2013 10:04:25 AM |

^no and hell no. White Sox want too much for peavy. Just stick with what you have. Teheran, Minor, Medlen, Maholm and Beachy/Wood will be fine. Especially if those first 3 pitch like they did in their last starts. 7/30/2013 11:22:08 AM |

If beachy can just improve a little and be in midseason form by September that's fine. As long as there aren't any more injuries I'm ok with just going with what we got 7/30/2013 11:43:13 AM |

^^ Yes, I like that rotation and it is just fine to get through the rest of the season and win the division, but do you honestly feel overly confident with it come playoffs, especially theoretically in the World Series with the American League having homefield advantage and the Braves being a fairly bad road team? I can't say I feel very comfortable with a 1-2-3 of Minor, Teheran, and Medlen/Beachy (no playoff experience among any of them) going against the 1-2-3 of the other potential playoff teams. Yes, the market is VERY slim, and the asking price for Peavy is way high, but Wren should do his due diligence to at least gauge what it would take to land an impact front-end starter. Just my two cents 7/30/2013 1:11:40 PM |

Jake Peavy's ERA in away games this year is 6.10. That is higher than Maholm's. Last year was the first year he finished a season with a sub 4.50 ERA since 2009. He is constantly battling some kind of injury. I just don't want to give up a truckload for a #2 or #3 pitcher that can't stay healthy.

Son, I will be disappoint if we don't get a SP. Minor is our ace from here out in 2013, but this will be his first season of full work load. Teheran has really made good on his promise this year, but I'm sure he'll be held back some until the PO. Medlen is wildly inconsistent, also will probably be held back some. Then we have Beachy/Maholm/Wood at this point, none of which you can really count on. So you can ride Beachy/Teheran/Medlen and be fine (if none of their arms fall off, and if they don't in 2013, continue to pray that they don't in 2014). but if anyone else suffers injury, we're fucked. and if one of those three doesn't get hurt, well, you still need another decent arm to allow them some type of rest to be effective come PO time.
Right now, I wouldn't worry about the prospects that we have to give up, our farm sytem really isn't all that anyway. there are no uber ELITE guys that are untouchable. go get an arm and capitalize on the potential 7/30/2013 4:05:14 PM |

I too am worried about all the young arms and heavy workloads. Both Beachy and Medlen are less than 2 years removed from TJ surgery, Teheran is essentially a rookie, and Minor is really only in his 2nd year. Wood probably won't be allowed to throw more than 75-100 innings.
Hopefully Maholm comes back strong from his injury and we can add an arm that will eat some innings like a Peavy or Norris. Obviously both those guys are bad options long term, but we need someone to help take the strain off the young arms. The only saving grace is that we have a big division lead and that may allow us to rest the younger guys in Sept some. 7/30/2013 5:38:20 PM |

I'm not worried about innings.
From what we know, we have the following guys that can start: Minor, Teheran, Medlen, Maholm, Beachy, Wood. That is 6 starters for a rotation that usually goes with 5. Once Maholm comes back, we could skip a start for a guy every now and again by throwing Wood if need be. Also, Aaron Northcraft is an innings eater in AA and is on the 40 man roster. When September callups come around, he could give us a spot start or two to give someone a break(especially if we continue this 9 game lead in the division. We can get by, and yes...I would be content going into the playoffs with Minor, Teheran, Medlen as my top 3. Adding a Jake Peavy isn't going to win a series.
And no, I don't want to lose anyone out of our development leagues for Jake Peavy. It is going to cost one of our top minor league arms, and I don't wanna lose that. The minor league talent pool is shallow enough as it is.

Also, Washington lost today, so looking like a 10 game lead in the East after tonight.

Good god this team is on fire right now. We'll be up 11 games after tonight, and it should be closer to 15 if we could have played like this on the road against those bad teams. Wish we could have somehow added a top of the rotation starter, but it wasn't going to happen with the market this season. We'll just ride this staff the rest of the way and see where it can take us! 7/31/2013 8:18:01 PM |
