Ottawa is an interesting story, and the exception to the rule here. Chicago has a hell of a team in front of their goalie, and Boston has a dude named Chara that will help average to above-average goalies look like all-stars.

STL: Halak $3.75M, Elliott $1.8M
SJ: Niemi $3.8M

Between Ward and Ellis, we've got $7.1M tied up in net. That's right in line with most playoff teams, and for a guy that's proven he can steal playoff games and win a Conn Smythe, that's worth a little extra. Shit, the Rangers have over 8 million combined in net and are on the outside; similar figures for Buffalo and Philly as well. Point is, finding a competent netminder is not easy, again, look at the famously comical struggles Philly and Toronto have had trying to fill that void.

I don't really have a problem with Jussi getting waived. I like the dude, but for a guy getting $3 million (and due that amount again next year), he's been underwhelming this year, in my opinion, by whiffing on quite a few good chances, taking some bad penalties and being a liability in the defensive end. He's won a good number of his face-offs, which I appreciate, but I have to assume we can find someone comparable for a lesser price and use some of that money on a top level defensemen.

I was hoping earlier in the season that McBain would be a trade piece in a move to get a defensive D-man. Unfortunately he's sunk his own stock and is more or less useless on the trade block right now.

I'm just blown away that after numerous defensive injuries that saw several AHL call ups for their NHL premiers, Ward out, more defensive injuries, then Ellis out, then Faulk...we haven't seen even any rumors of anything other than a 'depth defenseman'. News flash, JR, most of our remaining blue line are depth D.

I don't know what it is on the other end of the ice either, but our offense has 7 goals in our last 6 games, which has been the duration of this slump. 2 for 18 on the PP during the same 6 games. Just pathetic all around.

He's a +3, stays out of the box and averages 12 minutes or so a game. Not a lot of games played, but we are not good on D. This at least could create some competition. Could also be setting up a McBain trade.

I'd really like to see us try to get a "starting" goalie.
