There are two reasons i don't think Google will kill the nexus... VoLTE. When Verizon rolls out volte, they will no longer be able to block devices as they can under CDMA. This will enable Google to open their nexus lineup to a new set, and not have the problems of the fake nexus previously put on Verizon. They will get every single person still holding onto their unlimited data.
Plus, nexus 7. This tablet brought android tablets a competitive market share. 1/30/2014 7:17:01 PM |

So... are there any decent slider-keyboard Android phones on the market now? I think that after no news about the Droid 5 for so long, I think it may be vapor. (But I'm not completely giving up yet...) My Droid 4 is really starting to show its age. 1/31/2014 1:29:41 PM |

If you want cheap, the moto g is a pretty good value from what I understand. I love my moto x, they're around $400 now, they were $70 off the whole month up until Saturday... At 330 it'd be a great buy. Oblig nexus 5. 2/25/2014 7:19:08 PM |

Nexus 5 is a bit too much for this use I think...$250ish would probably be the limit. N5 is $400 with tax/shipping. 2/25/2014 7:20:29 PM |

you arent going to find anything new and worthwhile at ~$250 unless you look into the moto g. you should really look into the g, it has gotten pretty good reviews for what it is and it is on 4.4.2.
or you could try to find something used. 2/25/2014 8:41:39 PM |

Republic Wireless is now offering the Moto G. I've been with Republic about 8 months and love them.
$149 for the phone, no contract, cheapest plans around ($10 unlimited calls/texts, $25 unlimited calls/text/3G data, can change plan 2x/month).
https://republicwireless.com/ip/moto-g
If you're interested let me know and i'll give you referral link so we can both benefit. 3/16/2014 4:49:48 PM |

^ that's the 8GB version...16GB is $179
also, the referral links don't work anymore...they discontinued the $19 credit program as of 2/28 and are "rebooting" the referral system
since it doesn't get much simpler than plan credit, which is essentially cash monies, i assume they're going to something stupid like refer 3 friends and get 2 months free or RW bucks for purchasing accessories
it hasn't been announced, yet, so who knows 3/18/2014 9:23:47 AM |

Ok, so I'm abandoning Microsoft and going to Android. I'm on AT&T and I don't feel like moving or plunking down for an unlocked phone.
So that means either S4 or HTC One (or wait a month for the S5).
Recommendations? I'm kinda leaning toward the One. I love the durability and feel of my Lumia 920 but I'm so fucking tired of not seeing apps on the Marketplace.
lol, I might be waiting a month anyway, the One is out of stock everywhere local.

That's what I thought but the Galaxy Note 3 screen is really only 0.7" inch larger than the S4. You get used to it rather quickly. Everyone I know who's gotten one and had concerns about it's size changed their mind within about a week of owning it. I'm a normal sized guy (5'8" 175) and I've never had problems putting it in any pockets. It's fairly thin and light. The screen on the new Note 3 is fantastic.

I got the LG G2 a couple of weeks ago. I still have to get use to running with it. (I really want a forerunner 220 though, maybe for my b-day.)
I'm having some problems with my "favorites" dial/call page. It keeps listing a person that I havent talked to or texted under "frequently contacted" even though I've deleted that person... it annoys me to no end!

If you root a Samsung Galaxy phone and freeze/stop all the Samsung/Carrier processes and stick a launcher like Nova on it's almost identical to a Vanilla Android Rom. I'd even argue it's better than a vanilla android rom because you get the benefits of the Samsung software (usb drivers, certain apps that work/look better then vanilla versions, etc).
Quote : | "...what are they missing exactly? not being a dick; i'm genuinely curious." |
I mean without even going into all the advantages of Android over iOS you've just got a more usable device in general. I've had two iPhones, and two Android phones. All the things I enjoy doing on my Note now I find very difficult to do on a small iPhone screen. Games, looking at maps, reading, watching videos. It's all easier and more pleasant on a phone with a larger screen.3/27/2014 4:52:53 PM |

I find iOS to be a far superior mail/messaging device than Android.
I've had 3 Android devices and 1 iPhone (and 1 blackberry), and i prefer the iPhone at this point. The only thing I miss about Android is what ^ said regarding the keyboard. The iOS keyboard is terrible. Bottom of the barrel. Apple needs swype, or something better.
I do like the Droid Bionics (?) always-on voice control though. 3/27/2014 5:45:55 PM |

Don't really see any major differences. There's a Gmail app on both. The "mail" app on Android works just as well as on iOS. Text messaging works fine on Android. No real benefits to iOS other than the in-network text messaging (imessage?) so you don't use up your texts. Almost everyone has unlimited texts now so it doesn't really matter.
My main complaint about iOS is I had to jailbreak my iPhone to customize anything. You can't change the icons, layout, or have widgets at all. All this is standard with Android.
I'd even go as far as to say Android is better at Mail and Messaging than iOS because there's a lot more customization options that grant you faster and easier access to your messages where and when you want them. Apple really doesn't like third part applications messing with vanilla iOS apps.3/27/2014 6:03:38 PM |

It's been a year since i've used android regularly, but my big beef was with the exchange support. Not to mention Android was still dog slow back then. It's come a long way in the past year though, and could be worth a second look.
If customization is your thing though, you'll never like iOS. I'm fine with just being able to change background, text sizes, an icon layouts. 3/27/2014 6:09:06 PM |
neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
I think it's been a few years since Android was slow. My Note 2 is more than a year old and it's just as fast as most of the devices out today.
Exchange support is great. My only complaint is that the read status isn't pushed. (Although I don't think it is on iOS either). For example if you read an email on your laptop and it gets marked as read you have to open the mail app and sync it before that email gets marked as read. The only thing that is pushed is the incoming mail. Other than that exchange works great. 3/27/2014 6:17:31 PM |
