Oh snap! Is it really the 7th? Because my plan with AT&T isn't up until the 23rd at which time I was planning on switching back.

yup. After July 7th, non-smartphone/Verizon customers better get ready to bend over.

2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

If you would like to add tethering on to any of those packages, you can purchase 2GB of data at an additional cost of $20 per month.
Data plans w/ tethering:
4GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month
12GB – $100/month

did AT&T ever kill the unlimited plans for those grandfathered in? Or did they set a date by when unlimited would totally be gone for everyone?

Nope. They still have unlimited plans. There was talk a while back about them going after heavy users/obvious tethering people and automatically switching them to the 2GB plan, but I don't know how widespread that was. It really wouldn't surprise me if they did away with the option to grandfather your plan to the iPhone5 or whatever the next one is called.

I think it's interesting that VZW went to a 2GB metered plan and that it's $5 more per month than AT&T's 2GB plan. IIRC, VZW's original plans avoided the 2GB mark in what I always assumed was an attempt to avoid direct comparison to AT&Ts rates for the same amount of data. Also, I think it's a pretty big mistake for VZW to not offer a ~$15 for a small amount of data plan. I know that's the only reason my mom decided to get an iPhone was because AT&T started offering a $15 plan for 200MB. She has wi-fi and home and work and rarely ever uses more than 100MB a month of mobile data. Interesting that VZW isn't trying to go after that casual user market at all.

our unlimited at&t plan was grandfathered in & never canceled.

reported now that verizon will have a 75mb, $10/month plan. That is perfect for casual users or someone who has wifi 95% of the time.

That 5% of the time would still probably put you well over 75MB on a smartphone. I have wifi at home and work and still managed to use 100-200MB+ without really doing anything.

i have a droid with verizon but still have my old alltel plan. i get unlimited data and texts, 20 my circle numbers, free nights and weekends, etc... for cheaper than i could get any similar verizon plan.
they have let me keep it and said i could keep it as long as i wanted.
When I get an iphone, will i still be able to keep this plan? I don't see why not, since i have my droid on it.

I'd think you're good as long as you're on a smartphone prior to July 7th regardless of your voice plan. That isn't to say that Verizon can't decide to release a phone down the road that requires everyone to be on one of their Nationwide plans and screw them over though.

And it looks like that 75MB plan is only for feature phones so it's just an extension of the "limited time" add-on they already have. http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/22/edit-verizons-datagate-plans-leaked-in-excruciating-detail/

with wifi at work and home, my only real 3g data use is in the car. If I don't stream pandora much (like I have the past few days ) then i MAY get to 75mb with a lot of email or web usage. For someone like my dad the 75mb plan is perfect who wants email, maps, and weather, until he decides to start streaming radio paradise 4 months down the road.

this may be a stupid question, but i'd rather ask it than screw something up. our new iphones come in tomorrow, but we can't activate them until the 30th (that will happen in-house). can we go ahead & turn on, update, etc the new phones w/o activation...then just follow the instructions for calling an 877 number & entering a bajillion numbers on activation day?

^^You can't. At least not by any publicly available, remotely legal tools currently available. Supposedly the Dev Team has been working on an unlock for the newer basebands for a while, but nobody really seems to know the status, or even if they're still working on it.

Edit: Actually, that's not totally true. There are some sort of Grey Market Chinese/Russian/Something Sim cards you can order and then you dial some number and it's supposed to unlock your phone. But I heard it was illegal in most places and the websites that sell them look shady as hell to me.

^For AT&T activation is done with the SIM card through iTunes. Activating the phone also contacts AT&T and activates the SIM. I don't pretend to have the first clue how VZW activation works, but I wouldnt be surprised if it was handled in a similar way.

verizon doesn't use sim cards, i think. the instructions that i received via email say to call this 877 number from a landline or other mobile phone, then at the prompts you enter your mobile #, some code that comes on the receipt, & billing zip code or something. after that you dial *228 from the iphone & it programs it. maybe those were just stock instructions they send to everybody who orders this way, idk

That sounds kind of like what AT&T does through iTunes. I dunno. Like I said, I'm not even gonna pretend to have the first clue how VZW iPhones work. You could always just try it with one and play dumb if it activates it early.

^^ That's the usual way for Verizon phones but it really seems that my iphone was activated through iTunes instead of having to make a call. It's been a few months so I may be wrong but I remember thinking that it was an atypical activation.

HALP!!!!!

we decided to activate today. i'm helping one guy set up his new iphone. we wanted to set it up as a backup from his old phone. sounds easy enough. it couldn't setup from backup initially because the software version on the old phone was newer than that of the new phone. the only way to proceed was to set up as a new phone. our intention was to let it setup & update, then restore from that backup copy. when we click restore, it doesn't give us an option to restore from a backup copy, only to reset to factory settings. wtf are we missing here? i'm about to head over to his out to help him figure it out. i need to google some more also, but if you have ANY ideas PLEASE post. thank youuuuuu

okay, nevermind that post. we fixed it.

new problem. my iphone 4 has ios 4.2.8. obviously there is a newer version, but when i click update in itunes it says i have the most current version. what's going on? anywhere i can manually download & install this?

turns out the 4.3.mostrecent is the same as 4.2.8 for verizon phones.

So I'm finally getting into this iPhone business. I have AT&T now but there's no real reason to stay, especially since everyone I know with one uses at least 10 GB of data a month.

My question for people who are just getting the Verizon unlimited deal is this: is it a sure thing that everyone will be grandfathered in on the unlimited plan?

new problem...

before with 7 iphone 3GSs & 1 bb storm, we had no problems all sharing the wifi at work. now with 8 iphone 4s it will only let one of us in at a time. we've changed router password & it's name. it's several years old, but i don't know how that would make a difference (maybe it does idk). any ideas on what we can try/test/do?

^Try renewing the dhcp lease a couple of times on them. I have problems with my iphone4 sometimes where it won't get an ip address from the router, while other devices work fine on the first try.

^didn't work. i'm not sure what's going on. it's something to do with the new iphones though bc the router works fine w/ the old 3GSs. *sigh*

okay, on to another issue...
i told everyone to bring me their old iphones after they're sure everything has been moved/copied/whatever so i can wipe them clean & sell them. my dad brought his & my mom's in this morning. i erased all data, settings, etc with the erase function that's built in the phone. anyway, i JUST NOW got a text from my mom telling me she just remembered that she had been storing a voicemail from my grandmother (who died last august)!!!! jesus christ. is there anyway to get this back? we've switched networks so i'm pretty sure we're not going to get anything from at&t. does it store a copy on the computer somewhere when you sync by chance??

There's probably a backup of the phone sitting on someone's computer.

Restore the phone and it might be there.

Voicemails are not backed up on the phone. They're stored in the voicemail box on your cell provider's network. Unless the voicemail was explicitly copied somewhere else (which I don't think you can do with the default phone software) it's probably long gone.

Voicemails ARE stored on the phone. You can pull them off via ssh, etc. I don't remember if they will return if you restore.

has anyone here had their iPhone replaced under the AppleCare plan? If so what was wrong with your phone? Mine has some cracks on the case, isn't holding its charge, and the speaker doesn't seem to be working that well...just was wondering how much of hassle they might give me in getting a refurbished phone under warranty.

Our athletic department uses microsoft exchange servers, and I'm already set up on that, so my contacts/calendar/everything moves just fine between laptop and home, iphone, and office computer.

My iPhone took a swim this past weekend. It initially looked ruined, then I dried in and stuck it in a bag of rice for a day. Now the phone appears fine, except the Wireless and Bluetooth appear to be ruined.

Since Apple long ago stopped making any decent repairs on my device, I expect it is unrepairable. What are my likely options at the Genius bar? I know in the past, they would give you a new one with one that is unrepairable for a couple hundred dollars.

They do this all the time actually.

Apple seems to be one of the more generous companies when it comes to "oops" replacements (i recently had an iPad replaced outright for being RIDICULOUSLY dropped...). The genius phrased it to me as a "one time ever" replacement, and gave me a receipt with the comp'ed $350 "repair" charge.

Yeah, I've heard of them doing that sort of thing all the time. It's not exactly standard practice, but it's not a one in a million thing either. Apple usually has pretty damn good customer service, even when they don't technically have to.

I guess it depends on the genius. The guy i got was younger, and seemed to hate his job actually (~6 years ago the Apple Store wanted me to work there, but I didn't, and the genius said i made the right decision), but was friendly and understanding, and I threatened to hug him for replacing my iPad.

It was a chick that saw me. She was very nice to me. I'm not going to say she was flirting, but she was very pleasant. She told me that it was obvious I take good care of my phone (I do, but I dont carry it in a case), and that she was going to waive the $200 fee.

I was set not to buy another iPhone after the antenna issue, but after this, they've got me for another one.

I've been seeing a LOT of reports like that in the last month or so. I don't know if it's a policy change or what but it's pretty reassuring as an ip4 user that's in the construction industry.

they did that for me last month. My one "get out of jail free" card. It definitely wins them repeat customers and they just quickly make those into refurbs to hand out to the next guy that comes in with a broken phone.

hey carzin did they not check your water indicator to see if it turned red? I have the iphone 3g and after an update my wifi screwed up and doesn't work anymore. I took it to the store and they said they were going to give me a new one till they found out my water indicator in the dock was red and said they couldn't take it back anymore.

I'm debating on getting a refurb iphone4 with at&t..should I get it or just wait till the new one comes out? I've heard it just a few minor changes.

I've been having issues with the home button on my iPhone 4. It's pristine, never dropped, never abused, no scratches, nothing... but sometimes I'll press the home button and the phone doesn't do anything. It's just out of warranty (I got it when they dropped last year). Think the Genius bar will help me?
