Josh Pastner is the next Valvano.

Gregg Marshall would be an excellent choice, and could approach that level.

^ The thing about Marshall is we could have had him back when we were hired Sid. Marshall was looking for that next step up and took the WSU job after Turgeon went down to Oklahoma.

Firing Sid now is just a stupid move given our tough schedule so far and Tracy being out. If Tracy comes back and is actually healthy and we still lose double digits games in the ACC, then maybe.

I would be worried that Pastner learned to many of Calipari's tricks:
http://www.myfoxmemphis.com/dpp/sports/local_sports/072210-memphis-tigers-self-report-ncaa-violation

Primary concern hiring a new coach is that we run a clean program. There is a definite double standard with the UNC system BOG and we don't want them to have an excuse to dismantle our Athletics again.

^ did you actually read the violation that was referenced? If so, and that actually concerns you regarding "calipari's tricks" then you should also be worried about Sidney. He's committed a couple, this one back in 2008:

1) Pastner barely even coached under Cal. Like 8 months only.

2) Pastner would, in all likelihood choke on laughter when Yow called him.

The violation was in pursuit of a player who was awaiting trial for attacking some woman in Miami. Not as worried about the violation itself much more worried about who he was pursuing during that violation. Also Sidney (new to the NCAA at the time) made the mistake of talking about a recruit, he didn't commit a violation attending a game of a potential felon to try and recruit him for the team.

Yeah, and did you notice how he also said that it's Smith was in the one position that was going to hurt us the most being out? Last year, wasn't it the guards that we needed? Is Lowe never going to be successful unless we have 5 healthy stars out on the court? $10 says that if Tracy comes back healthy and then Scott Wood gets hurt, he'd complain about how not having our outside shooter is really killing the offense, and that people aren't being realistic by judging him without our best outside shooter.

People are just tired of the excuses. It's a coaches job to adjust. One player, no matter how good, shouldn't throw our game off so significantly for so long, particularly given the talent that we have acquired in basically all other positions on the court.

Last year I was a huge fan of Lowe. This year I was, too. Hell, the background on my phone is still a picture of me and him from the Jimmy V Classic this year. I like the guy. He just does so many things during the game that no one seems to understand...and when we lose as much as we do, that's going to piss some people off.

In his defense, we don't have a second big man in the post with presence like Tracy. I don't think Lowe was prepared for him getting hurt (which is some NC State shit). Howell, Painter, and Vandy have struggled down there be it poor body positioning, lack of awareness of court position, or god damned butterfingers. Not to mention they don't rebound for shit.

We shot like 30% against Arizona, and we stayed in the game for the most part. We were right there with syracuse for the whole game. If we accept Wisconsin was an outlier (and everyone will have some of those), then really Lowe's not doing a bad job.

and to answer your question about having one guy out causing a team of youngsters to perform poorly... Look at UNC. They lost their big man (and their star guard), and they are struggling too. (lol, they got bumped from ESPN2 tonight for a women's game, lolz).

Alright, I'll give you that. But he's lacked on defense, even though he's given better effort there than the others, and the team as a whole sucks ass at boxing out

^^^if the ball gets knocked out of your hands by a PG, the rebound should count.

It comes down to all the big man not stepping up against good teams. the hard part and debate is: is it coaching or are these players fill in the blank (too young, too shitty, to dumb, too weak, not mentally tough, etc...).

Right now there is no flow on D or O, and it's real hard to watch.

I mean they'll prob lose the big games and wouldn't be ranked no.1 in the nation. I was at Cameron yesterday and without Nolan they are leading by 12(and it seems Elon can narrow the gap) in the second half. One 'glue' player makes everyone better and the contribution is not just individual stat.

I love when pussies use bullshit reasons to eliminate great candidates from consideration. It's like the fag at the bar who comes up with bullshit reasons no to talk to a chick.

- I don't really know any facts, but this guy will surely put us on probation!!
- No one wants to come here because Lee Fowler's shitty coaching search didn't turn up anyone better than Lowe, and I also have no knowledge of what any coach thinks!!

Lowe calls all you douchers out haha, he says you don't live in reality.

Now you've gotta feel stupid when your opinions are so out of touch the coach tells you to live in reality.

And this is how you end up with a John Blake situation. Are you really delusional enough to think that if we had a similar situation on our campus the media and the UNC BOG would be so helpful in trying to sweep it under the rug. We have to run a clean ship because unlike UNC we will get raped if we don't.

Luckily the team isn't letting all these debbie-downer arm-chair pointguards get them down.

http://www.wralsportsfan.com/ncsu/story/8814632/

Quote :
"There hasn't been much to celebrate about the start to N.C. State's 2010-11 basketball season.

Losses to Georgetown, Wisconsin, Syracuse and Arizona means there won't be a marquee non-conference victory. The Pack struggled to beat lesser teams like Tennessee Tech, Fairleigh Dickinson, and trailed Youngstown State by nearly 20 points in the first half before pulling away. And Tracy Smith the last eight games with an injury.

A solid recruiting class coupled with some key returning players had many believing this would be head coach Sidney Lowe's best team yet - and a sure fire NCAA Tournament team. But after a 6-4 start it's not a given that N.C. State ends it's five year March Madness drought.

But the head coach still tried to focus on positives when asked to diagnose the early stages of the season for his team.

"When I look at our team I look at a team that's continuing to try to grow, continuing to try to improve. We're getting better in some areas. I like the mindset right now. That's the main thing is that they still feel confident in themselves," Lowe said Tuesday on his Wolfpack Sports Network radio show. "We have to shoot the ball better. We have to score a little better.....and just keep playing, just play as hard as we can and stay together which their doing."

And not having senior forward Tracy Smith has made it difficult for a young Wolfpack team to put points on the board.

"We're playing without our leading scorer and the center piece of our offense. He opens up other opportunities for the other players," Lowe said.

But fortunately Smith will return in time for the ACC schedule. Lowe said his big man won't play against Delaware State, but he will be ready to go after Christmas. And the Wolfpack need him in order to start racking up wins.

Because if recent history is any proof, a Pack team without a big non-conference victory may need to go on an incredible tear to catch the eye of the Selection Committee.

Just look at Virginia Tech.

Seth Greenberg's Hokies finished last season 23-8 overall, went 10-6 in the ACC and had four non-conference wins against BCS level schools. Those non-conference wins were against the likes of Iowa, Georgia, Penn State and Seton Hall, but there were non-conference wins to speak of. Still, that wasn't enough to be invited to the big dance.

The Wolfpack have 20 games remaining before the ACC Tournament, and would have to finish the season 17-3 to pull its record to 23-7. Currently the only ranked opponent on the schedule is Duke (twice).

N.C. State has a good chance to string together five straight wins with Delaware State, Alabama A&M, San Diego, Elon and Wake Forest all on the upcoming schedule.

I still think us going 10 and 6 with a few ACC Tourney wins will get us in. VT hasn't played anyone worth a shit out of conference in years and they typically play the weakest in conference schedule year in and year out with only playing the top teams once. Plus, the committee has just as strong of a history of looking favorably at teams who started slow because of injury IF they finish well.

i mean, it's possible, but it's sorta prefaced on tracy smith being so transformative that he turns this team into a strong 7+ seed.
