From an engagement I shot last weekend. We hit up a few spots on campus and came up with this. It was a lot of fun, they were great to work with, and I think we ended up with some decent stuff.

Great set, Ronny! You sure get around with those lights. Did you use your Vagabond/AB combo or speedlights? Very clean compositions too.

We'd been looking into getting a DSLR the past couple months but hadn't pulled the trigger. Today at Sam's they had a D5100, which was the camera we'd been looking at seriously, an 18-55mm lens, a 55-200mm lens, and case for all of it that someone must have bought online and returned for ~$670 plus tax. The sticker said original price was $899.

Please validate my purchase.

Also, hopefully I will have some stuff soon that's half as awesome as what you guys post.

I rented a 5D Mkiii yesterday and shot full frame digital for the first time. It was nice, but not a mkindset changing experience that I expected. I was shooting a corporate event type of thing, so maybe it didn't have much room to shine. Or maybe I just did not take full advantage of the crazy ISOs. Anyhow MKiii with the kit 24-205 f/4 was very comparable on the brightness and focus accuracy to the 70D with a f/2.8 It was super nice to have two bodies and not have to swap the lenses all the time. Did not really get to put it through its paces in terms of video either.

I've heard the 24-105 is a surprisingly great lens, if/when I eventually get a 5D I may just have to get the kit so I can get some L glass for basically ~$300 off. I don't really have any decent zooms anyway, not counting the 11-16.

Yeah im way off on my number pad

The range of the 24-105 is definitely nice, wider and longer than my favorite 17-55 on crop sensor. DOF at f/4 is same or shallower than f/2.8 on the crop as well (which can be a good thing or not). Very light and compact for L glass. Definitely worth the kit price.

Went out to the track with some friends and shot some track practice photos this past weekend. Rented 400mm f/4 prime for the close up action shots, also shot with the ef-s 17-55, 10-22, and 18-200. For portraits I used 580exII speedlight for fill and edge. I fucked up majorly by not using servo AF and more than half of my shots ended up being off focus. It was hard to tell on the camera screen even with the magnification on, but as soon as i opened them on my monitor it was obvious Lesson learned

These were mine and frybaby's. Ronny did a great job and it was fun (I pretty much never say that about photographers/having my picture taken). We've gotten a ton of compliments on them and she was very happy with them... some of my favorites aren't even on here. That last one with the rain was baller though.

Looks like Apple saw an untapped market of people who don't know how to operate a camera but want to take photos. It's hard to imagine that no camera or film company has ever thought to tap that market.

People should need licenses to own cameras so no bad photos are ever taken

In a light field camera, aperture is not a factor. So it comes down to shutter speed and ISO. In fact, as technology develops, shutter speed may not be a factor either (at least in the superfast to quarter second range). Essentially, the camera knows which direction each photon came in from and at what time it happened, making aperture and shutter speed adjustments possible in post production by the photographer or even by the end-user (viewer) in the same way the end user can now re-focus the photo at any area. It is not a replacement for a DSLR, it is a different technology with a different user experience, kind of like what Polaroid was.

And you guys need to get off your high horses. It's not like these people with entry level DSLR kits are eating your lunch. If anything, they are making your photos look better to those in the know. In the meantime, these people can enjoy documenting their reality in their own way, no matter how blurry the photos and how many instagram filters are smothered on top of it.

By the way, iPhone camera is pretty fuckin badass for a fully automatic point-and-shoot. I dont know why that Blackberry picture is up there, nothing special about their camera.

^looks like it was tough lighting to work with. That one where you were dragging the shutterworked very well with her shirt. A tight, snooted shot of second curtain flash through to her face would have probably made her recognizable.

Estimate on how much it would cost to get some lenses cleaned/lubed? The zooming/focus rings feel a bit gritty.

Just a basic Nikon 55-200 VR and 35/1.8.

There are Photoshop and Premiere, which are professional level image and video editors, respectively.
Then there are Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, which are consumer-oriented editors. Nothing wrong with using either one of them, depending on your needs. You don't need a 500 dollar software licence to put together family videos. Photoshop elements combines sorting and tagging functions of Lightroom and editing functions of Photoshop pretty nicely. It still has layers, blending options, vector graphics, and most other things you would need from photoshop. It doesn't have masking or many fine selection tools available in Photoshop CS5/CS6, and I'm not sure if it allows working with RAW files, which maybe more of a problem.

I have used Elements for a while before I switched up to Photoshop. For quick editing I still occasionally use it, though I am trying to force myself to only learn/utilize CS6. It is not as powerful as Elements and can't run some basic things you will want to use, like Actions and Lens Correction, but for just doing a little cropping and photo adjustment it can do pretty good. Just realize you are getting what you pay for with it and it is not nearly as strong as any Photoshop CS4-6.

I need a lens like whoa. I'm tired of borrowing glass. I've got a fixed 50mm that was kind of a stop gap solution when I first bought the body but now I have some solo shoots I've gotta do.

This is discussing Nikon gear instead of Canon glass, but I was camping with my sons cub scout pack this weekend and talking to another dad who shoots with a D7000. He uses it strictly for family pictures and has an 18-200. He said its a great vacation lens, and I tried it out and enjoyed it for what it was. But there is no way in hell I would carry that thing for a wedding shoot. I'm not sure I would even consider it for an outdoor wedding. Again this was the Nikon glass, not Canon, but I just did not feel like it would be fast enough in zooming, focusing, or in getting enough useful light to be anything but a vacation/travel lens when you want one body and lens to cover the whole shoot. In that situation the flexibility is worth the lost image quality and slower response time.

For video it should be OK. I'm not sure what other lenses you own, but if you have the 50mm 1.8 (which is pretty common), or any other fast normal/lightly telephoto prime, you will be fine using that 18-200 for all the outdoor stuff and swap for the prime for anything that will be super low light.

I think the entire wall behind the altar is glass and faces the ocean so light should be abundant

In that case, make sure not to shoot AGAINST that wall unless there is strong fill light coming from the opposite direction Profile shot should look great though. And whatever you do, don't shoot handheld! Bring a monopod, or a tripod. I feel like monopod works better for run-and-gun situations. last thing you will need while shooting video at a bright environment such as the beach is LCDVF.
