Some people actually view the wolf web on a (*gasp*) tablet!

Honestly, if you can't show a preview of your subject with a simple 800x600(+/-) small proof, then your framing sucks or whatever you were trying to show is really small.

It's silly to think that having a high resolution picture will add way more value to every picture. I don't want to open up the page and view a 2400 pixel wide photo of a stupid UNC cone that could have been viewed at a smaller resolution.

If you are worried that a low res proof would loose meaning to whatever you shot, just add a link to a higher resolution under the proof for people to enjoy in all its glory if you wished. If its a good shot, I wouldn't mind clicking on another link to see the expanded detail view of the same shot. Good, sharp nature/landscape shots in particular.

Also, I've been trying to get some practice with time lapse videos. I took this the other night during the Orionid Meteor Shower at the Farrington Boat Ramp on Jordan. I knew I wouldn't get any meteors in the pictures, but for my first attempt at night time photography I was pleased.

So my wife has always had an interest in photography and she is a pretty good amateur photographer with our canon elf point and shoot. I’m looking at getting her a DSLR for Christmas and hopefully get a steal on Black Friday. I’m trying to keep my budget under $500 for the body and lens. A kit with carrying case would be a bonus. First I would suggest that you ask your wife. As much as I love surprise presents, when it comes to things I am passionate about, I like to be pretty particular. With cameras in particular, Canon vs Nikon are like the Dems vs GOP, so if she has opinion formed about the DSLR scene, you have 50% chance of getting the brand she does not want. Once you start buying lenses and other proprietary gear like flashguns (and she most likely will), you are pretty much tied to that brand.

If you absolutely have to make it a surprise, you are sure she wants to be creative with photos, and she already has a decent point-and-shoot, skip the kit and get the body you like+35mm or 50mm lens with large aperture (for the least expensive ones you are looking F/1.8 or f/2). You can probably get body + 50mm f/1.8 for right around 500 new from either of the brands. Autofocus 30mm or 35mm lens will be tougher to score in your budget range. Skip the bag as well, if she is anything like most women, she'll get a designer padded bag down the road anyhow. Memory cards are dirt cheap now and having one in a kit is not a major advantage. And for god's sake, don't fall for the microfiber cleaning clothes "valued at 29.99" that come with some of these kits. Those things such and will not clean anything, in fact they will probably fuck up the coating on your lens. Get her a Lens Pen, or use the cloth that came with your iPhone. If you absolutely MUST have the kit lens, get one off craigslist for <50 bucks that no one else wants. Also get her a book on photography, preferable written specifically for that model camera ("From Snapshots to Great Shots" is a great series). All that info is available on the Internetz for free, but the book will speed up the process immensely.

Here is on though, a portrait of my grandpa. Edge light came out a little harsh (should have softboxed it), but overall I still like it.

They usually put shitty lenses in those kits because most people aren't reviewing/researching the lenses

I've been using southeastern camera in Raleigh for some gear purchases/rentals recently and have been really pleased with them and their prices. You could get her a gift card there and then go in and see if they can help her put together a good package. She'll get a chance to handle everything and see what she likes and may be able to find a good deal on used gear (I bet they'll get a ton after Christmas is over) that would be better quality but lower cost because it's used.

You are absolutely right, right now it blends in pretty bad. The plan was to separate the jacket from the background with the rim light. It ended up hitting too hard on the side of the face and not hard enough on the jacket, i should have pointed the flash lower. It was kind of a rushed photo shoot. Maybe I can dodge the jacket outline in photoshop just a bit. Alternatively, I could lighten the background (I already smoothed it a little bit due to wrinkles on the muslin), but I like how the really dark one brings his face out. Thanks for the feedback!

^if you think she'll be OK with going used, CL is the best way to go. My local camera store absolutely overprices used equipment as compared to the market price. Not sure what is the deal in Raleigh area though.

Igor.....thanks for the feedback. My wife is not very tech savvy. The intricacies of the DSLR functionality is something that she has yet to learn. I really am just looking for an introductory DSLR so she can get her feet wet. She would be happy with anything that I got her. I'm the one who is very particular about my technical gear so I read a lot of reviews. I came to TWW for some input on the major differences between those models and what would be best bang for my buck. In all seriousness...I asked her if she had to choose between a new Kindle Fire or a DSLR what would she want. She chose the camera so since then I have been shopping around. She's not a photophile (is that even a word) so at this point she hasn't learned to be picky about her gear.

Ok in that case brand does not matter as much, as loyalties are split about half and half. All of those models are pretty comparable, obviously at the same price you should go with the D3100 vs 3000, as 3100 was a pretty major refresh for Nikon. In terms of miniscule details, i woul line them up like this: D3100>t3>D3000. I still stand by my suggestion to get a wide aperture lens and a book, or it is very likely that your wife's DSLR photos will turn out very similar to the photos she took with the P&S.

Problem is, you can't get a new-in-box T3 or 3100 body only, as body-only packaging starts with T3i and 5100. You can get body-only on Amazon from individual sellers:

Or, if you can stretch your budget just a little bit, you could just get one of the kits you posted and add a $100 50mm f/1.8 from either of the vendors, and a $15 book

your grandpa's pose is very nice and very natural. The only thing I'd say about the framing would be to shoot it in portrait aspect instead of landscape; if you wanted to keep it landscape, then I'd say follow the rules of third, specially when you are dealing with a lot of negative space and black of all things.

The exposure looks about .25 to .33 stop under exposed (light skinned specular transition (forehead, nose, cheeks) should be around 218-225 value) and my only real complaint about the lighting is that you didn't get enough light spill from the kicker to outline his black coat so you could separate him from the black background.

I suspect the type of textile & dye used for his jacket just soaks up light like no tomorrow, but you could just fake it in photoshop by playing with the mid levels of black and only paint it in for his jacket as I do see 'some' light spill from the kicker after pushing the mids by about 2 stops, but it does present with a bit more noise (of which can be canceled out a bit with a noise filter and/or de-saturate color since you are only dealing with a black jacket with white lines).

As for the kicker being a "little harsh", I think it looks good in terms of the level of specular highlight and the contrast around that area. Adds a nice pop and gives the subject dimension. It looks professional.


Usually, most people who shoot portraits like that tend to miss three key things of which you got right.
1. Reflections off the lenses
2. Top part of the frame intersects the eyes
3. Miss specular highlight in the eyes (as in dead black eyes)

Also for high contrast portraits, you have to watch for green tinting of the skin tone in some subjects in the mid to dark blacks; usually on light skinned people. Some times, different post techniques or even just exporting the photo in wrong color spaces can make the green way more apparent; specially when you go to print. Just as a note, not saying your photo has it. Just FYI/More you know kinda info for others who read this.

^last photo is the strongest of the four. Very iconic perspective with good use of leading lines and a very balanced photo from contrast, negative space and rules of third. Make a B&W render and it could be timeless. My only complaint is if you could bump the mids and blacks up a bit; the shadows under the tree's is a bit too dark. Maybe bring up exposure of the whole photo up by 1/3 of a stop could do it.

The first three are a bit bland, boring and blah; touristy shots that you'd see people shoot with P&S. Since you got a dlsr, use that selective focus more; easiest way is to get detail shots of ordinary things. Don't be afraid to take a knee or even shoot blind while extending the camera over your head to get a shot. You'd be surprised what a few inches to the left, right, up or down from the same vantage point will do.

Our brains are tricky mofo's and we can tell when something was shot at eye height; we automatically categorize most eye height shots as "normal" and our brain thinks its boring. Which is why we have other things to use in a scene to make a "normal" shot look interesting like contrast, color, lines, curves, negative space, positive space, forms and so on.


One thing to do when you do travel abroad is to get natural portraits of the locals; environmental portraits. Learn how to say "Can I take your portrait?" in whatever language. It will add a face to your photos that's not of your own or your girls and give your collection depth.

It maybe daunting to ask others to take their photo like a journalist, specially if you are half way around the world, but you'd be surprised that most people are happy to help. Even bring a strobe or two off camera to do mobile lighting for portraits. That's what your significant other is there for right?... human light pole? lol

Some Christmas Pictures I took in the town's park of the town Christmas Trees. I was just board, so why not?







This last picture is of an old shop that has these old people always talking in front of, sitting in their chairs. I think I roused their suspicion because they kept looking my direction, and after a while their group broke up.




All of the pictures were taken my my Tamron 70-300 "Macro" lens and some editing in CS 6 on my new 27" 2560x1440 monitor (Korean Yamakasi Catleap monitor).

My kid's got croup so we're stuck at home all day. I wanted to play with my speedlight and practice using a single light source and completely underexposing the background. He was the only one around so I just set up the light to spotlight him as he ran through the kitchen. This was the best exposure out of the group.

Awesome ruin porn, pezking! Those shots have a very eerie feeling to them, but also a sweet collection of all sorts of textures and colors. I really want to go shoot something in an old abandoned facility of some sort.

I finally splurged and got a MKIII. Mostly because it is much easier to get gigs as soon as people know you have a 5D (vs 60D which I still vill use for my run-and-cun video shoot and as a second body in commercial shoots). I must say that the low light sensitivity on 5D is insane, I can shoot video at 6400 ISO with no perceivable noise, and I'm glad it finally has all the necessary audio recording features such as mic in and headphone out, although I do still miss the swivel LCD that works so nice for video on the 60D. Autofocus is superior to anything that I have ever shot with. I am still trying to get through the 30+pages about different AF modes in the manual. Hopefully some pics to come. Right now only a proud owner shot made with the 60D and a lensbaby SPark that i got as a xmas present)

I know Ronny, Igor, Nighthawk, JBaz & myself shoot professionally, or have in the past. And I think there are at least 3-4 more like greeches that have received pay for work. There were also several others have in the past that I worked with that posted in here and have since left TWW.

Also, though he doesn't post in here I think Apocalypse was/is a photographer for the military. Or at least that's true for the guy I knew that originally had that account.
