So I just got my first shotgun back in January. Remington 870. I haven't shot it too much, maybe 150 rounds or so. A while back it started jamming up pretty bad. Got to the point where every shell would stick coming out of it. I stopped shooting it once this happened. Been busy with some other stuff so it's basically been sitting since February or so. Today I finally got around to cleaning it, and when I started taking it apart I heard a small rattle in the butt end of it once I took the bolt out. Turned it upside down and a small piece of metal came out. After looking around a little bit, I found out where it came from. Took some pictures, and I was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on what I should do, or if it would be safe to not worry about.
Here's a picture with the piece in place.

And here's what the piece looks like by itself.
If I had to guess, I would say that a) that's what was causing my jamming, and b) it would probably be ok to shoot without that piece of metal, but I am not sure on either of those guesses, so I was hoping that someone with more knowledge could let me know what's up. Thanks.

Upon further inspection, it looks like that piece of metal is what keeps the barrel of the gun from wiggling around once it is in place. Don't think I feel like chancing it on something like that. Will be calling Remington customer support tomorrow since it's still under warranty.

looks like the ejector to me. it pushes against the spent shell to force it out of the gun.

So you're saying it's not just what keeps the barrel from wiggling around?

edit: I think you're right in that this is part of the ejector housing, but this part specifically isn't part of the ejector. Unless I just completely have no idea what I'm looking at, which is an extremely likely possibility.

ah, you are correct. The bolt being not placed all the way to the rear in your first post threw me off. The part of the ejector that throws the spent shells out of the receiver is about 2" farther back and they are part of the same piece of metal.

Is it really? I just wanted a basic shotgun and everything I read said to go with the 870 or the Mossberg 500. I mean, yeah, it may be the Camry of shotguns, but I'm not going to be using it for hunting or anything. Just something to mess around with, and also something to have around the house in case I need it which hopefully will never happen, but you never know.

I referred to new 870s as garbage a couple of years ago and got run out of the thread for it. Glad to see that people are coming around to seeing them as mass produced imitations of their former self. I personally would rather spend another $100 or so and get a BPS, but I'm left handed and prefer a gun with bottom ejection. Whoever's in the duck blind beside me also prefers me having bottom ejection too. I also think a tang safety is much easier to use than the thumb safety on the 870.

The old 870 Wingmasters were good guns; it's a shame what's happened to that gun.

mossberg 500 is lower cost, has a tang safety, and has a slide release in a more ergonomic position. no reason to buy an 870 for home defense imo.

i love my 870 super mag, although i only bought it really because i needed

a) a long barrel pump 12 gauge

b) it was so discounted at bass pro it was hard to ignore

c) ive never owned a camo gun before or one that fired 3.5 inch shells


A word on those shells, I fucking hate them and I seriously doubt there are many situations where 3 inch isnt enough. Ive fired most safari calibers in existence and none of them give me a headache the way a 3.5 inch steel load does.

The express line is what truly ruined the 870. Cerebus is terrible, but it was such a simple gun to begin with it would be really hard to screw it up (fundamentally). Unless you go LOOKING for cost cutting measures and ways to make an already cheap gun cheaper... And you get the 870 express. The metal looks like it got a rattlecan paintjob and the wood looks like those laminate particleboard bookcases at walmart. Terrible.

Monarchs have 1/8 MOA. I meant BDC. Im new at this long range rifle stuff. Pretty happy with the Monarch so far. No, Nikon will not replace reticles but there are several companies who will.


My 870 Marine Magnum is on my never sell list.

Mildots are for shooting ballistic and wind holds, which becomes much more difficult with your standard duplex reticle.

870 expresses are ok guns if you don't factor in cost. If you factor in the cost then you're better off with a mossberg or norinco or any of the other pumps.
Considering the number of 870s sold a broken ejector isn't significant. Then again, if Remington didn't cheap out and rivet POS parts in then it might not have broken.

I'm not a fan of Cerberus/Remington in general. They really have cashed in on a name. Seriously, who tf in their right mind thinks its ok to make an extractor in a bolt gun out of a riveted circular piece of thin spring steel?
