Well considering it's becoming illegal to not use a bluetooth in some states and being on a conference call while using a laptop is really hard if you're holding the phone I thought it would be a no brainer.

I'm almost always on a bluetooth if it's more than just a 30 second call.

For traveling I prefer a nice bluetooth headset. For work I use these:

Yeah I complained a bunch that it was hard to work in our office (we have 'bullpens' or circles of 10 or so desks with a big table in the middle). They're great for collaboration but a bitch when you're on the phone with a client or someone who's second language is English. Those are nice because you can walk around with them.

anyone have a recommendation for offline GPS navigation?

Google Maps works great offline if you save the area first. Just type "Ok maps" in the search bar and it lets you select an area to save offline. Pretty sure you can use nav on it after that.

are you sure that you didnt have a signal?

let me clarify, if you do not close maps because you know you will be going into an area where you know you will have no signal - it will work

T-mobile coverage is awful outside the big cities so I have to keep maps running and pre-run any route I can anticipate and it will always work, if I close it and retry it won't

What's the application you are looking to use this for? I assume there are offline GPS apps, but I also assume you'd have to download hundreds of megabytes of map data.

Tried out a few, my favorite so far is MapFactor:GPS. It is free and uses OSM. It's pretty decent, it worked well when I tested it this morning on my commute. Offline searching is a little tedious, but overall its easy enough to figure out how to use.

has anyone here used a USB 3.0 flash drive as external storage on their Nexus 5? Additionally, is there any good way to do it without rooting?

Just looking to store my music on it for use when I'm away from wifi for extended periods.

I was looking at this app potentially: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer&hl=en

It's plenty for just using it as a phone. Between pictures and apps I never worry about internal storage capacity. It has plenty for those.

I listen to a lot of music though. At work at my desk I stream it via Amazon Music on my laptop. At home it's either via roku, laptop, tablet, phone, you name it on wifi over our house speakers. However, there are times when I am traveling where I don't have wifi for extended periods of time and still like to listen to music without eating through my data and I don't like having to constantly rotate what albums I have access to (I jumped to a 120GB ipod almost as soon as they came out). Typically on these trips I bring my ipod with me and it's loaded up currently with ~110GB (nearly out of the 120GB nominal capacity) even after culling some.

I was thinking that it would be nice to just carry a 128GB flash drive and OTG cable around with me for those times. The cost of a good 128GB usb 3.0 may be prohibitive though.

Motorola says the 360’s battery lasts a day, but I haven’t seen it last that long yet. I don’t expect a smartwatch to last weeks or years, but it ought to be able to last a day and a night no matter how much I use it. My watch now dies before my phone does, and that’s unacceptable. I’ve already spent too much time wearing a dead Moto 360, and good-looking a bracelet as it is, that’s not what I’m spending $249 for."

It looks good but LOL at that battery life.

It's funny that almost every non-vanilla Android phone supports USB OTG cables and hard drives or thumb drives. All my previous Samsung Galaxy phones and my current LG G3 are basically plug and play with it comes to any type of external device.

Also it's nice to be able to stick a 64GB micro sd card in there for this very purpose (128's are still a little pricey).

Does anyone ITT actually want a watch that gives me access to MORE notifications? Maybe I'm old but I'm starting to turn off notifications at work and in social situations because it's distracting and you look like a tool.

I think the G Watch R and Moto 360 look cool, but I'd still rather get a Citizen or Seiko if I'm in the market for a new watch. I think this is the 3DTV of the mobile tech market. They are trying super hard convince us it's the next big thing but it just isn't.

Agreed

I don't give a shit about getting texts on my watch or making calls from it. That honestly looks so freaking stupid, I wouldn't be able to go through it. If they made a nice color amoled display that maybe showed the time, weather and that's it, I'd be interested. Especially with a nice titanium band.

^this. relevant information would be nice.

Though I would prefer a watch that had a normal time piece and face that automagically turned into the display when it was presenting said information. Otherwise, I don't care for a computer-phone-watch.

^ honestly, where's the value in that? doesn't most of the civilized world have unlimited minutes these days? carriers are clamping down on data, which i assume hangouts-to-hangouts calls use...sure, it doesn't matter if you're on wifi, but then you can still just make a normal call

i suppose the only real advantage is being able to make a call when you don't have cellular reception...which of course means you won't have data, either, unless you're on wifi

I'm thinking of some of my friends' cabins that have pretty terrible cell reception but do have internet. What about overseas on wifi as well? Also my father in law's house is in Charlotte but is just in a terrible spot. No one in our families gets good reception there for some reason no matter whether it is Verizon, ATT, or T Mobile. Could be useful when we spend some holiday time there. Definitely a few scenarios I can see this being useful.

Finally.

^^Thanks just did that. Wonder how Google Voice SMS will be integrated into hangouts. Don't see an option anywhere. Only Google Voice related option is the check box in settings to send calls from GV number to hang outs.
