How'd you keep from spraypainting the letters on the barbells? 10/18/2006 8:38:49 PM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
I painted over them several times, and then after the red paint had a chance to dry I went back and touched up the letters with a fresh coat of white paint. since the letters are raised, it was fairly easy to hit them with a small brush. I taped the bristles together so that I wouldn't end up with white splatter on the plates. 10/18/2006 8:44:42 PM |

I'm setting up a gym in my garage right now. I'm hoping to buy a power cage in the next couple of months and possibly pick up an elliptical machine to put in the living room beside my exercise bike. 10/18/2006 9:07:40 PM |

Looks fucking sweet man. Having your own dungeon w/ no rules is where its at. Suprised I didn't get yelled at for doing reverse band dl's. 10/18/2006 11:11:01 PM |

My DL is all messed up. I can't get a comfortable set up, like my shoulders are too far forward so there is no leg drive. I might switch to a sumo stance. 10/24/2006 9:05:44 PM |

have you tried putting baby powder on your shins and dragging the bar up your legs? if I don't hit my knees going up, then it feels awkward. 10/24/2006 9:09:19 PM |
Restricted All American 15537 Posts user info edit post |
Nope, I'm more of a dive bomber...grip and rip, but my shoulders where behind the bar and I was pulling straight back, don't think I've tried pulling that close to my shins. Now I have gained some weight in my gut, which could be causing some problems for me as far as my set up. I just wrapped up reverse bands cycle today so that could have also given me some fits. 10/24/2006 9:21:19 PM |
eleusis All American 24527 Posts user info edit post |
I grip the bar and then dip down, rocking the bar into my shins as close as I can before starting the ascent. That allows me to use my legs heavily in the first inch of the lift and then shift more into back strength. I also lock my traps as far back as I comfortably can so that I'm not rounding out my upper back.
Deadlifts are IMHO the only trap exercise that needs to be done, with maybe the exception of explosive high pulls. If I ever want to make the transition to olympic lifts, I might start doing that. I would definitely need to find a different gym before I start doing that though. 10/24/2006 9:30:13 PM |

wear pants when doing Deads (preferably sweat pants) if you don't have or can't use chalk seems to help a little bit
and deads are basically all I do for traps too...sometimes I'll throw in some power shrugs, but only like once every other week 10/24/2006 11:07:32 PM |

I always enjoy it when people walk up to me in the gym and ask me "Holy Shit! What do you do to work traps?"
The shock on their face when I tell them "not a damn thing, except for max effort deadlifts and heavy bentover barbell rows" is hysterical. 10/24/2006 11:11:04 PM |

shrugs are worthless. they only work about 5% of the actual trap muscle. the majority of the muscle is designed to shrug the shoulder blades back towards each other; not to your ears. 10/24/2006 11:33:03 PM |

Quote : | "CBS) WAPPINGERS FALLS, N.Y. You can lift, strain, crunch and sweat all you want at the Planet Fitness in the Dutchess County village. But whatever you do, do not grunt.
Yep, "no grunting." It says so, in black and white, on a sign posted at the gym. One former member learned the new rule the hard way.
"This is really absurd, especially the part about the grunting," said Al Argibay, a corrections officer who learned first-hand "no grunting" means exactly that.
Argibay, a former competitive bodybuilder, joined the gym in September because it was affordable and convenient.
Planet Fitness is also somewhat picky, with a long list of dos-and-don'ts posted right inside the door.
"No grunting or screaming" is listed, along with "no bandanas or do-rags."
"We're creating an atmosphere that's not intimidating," said Carol Palazzolo, the gym manager, who yanked Argibay's membership on Monday.
Argibay said he was at a multi-press station, getting ready to squat about 500 pounds when the forbidden sin happened. "I let out a grunt, squatted down, back up, grunt again. That's it," explained Argibay. "Basically, grunt, grunt, basic breathing in heavy, and breathing out."
Grunting is commonplace at most gyms, but not Planet Fitness, which discourages so-called "musclehead behavior."
There's even a flashing light and siren on the wall, labeled a "lunk alarm," which sounds if someone grunts or drops weights on the floor.
Is it ok to grunt while working out?
Palazzolo admits she called the cops on Argibay. The Wappingers Falls police report said officers were asked to "escort a member out of the club for grunting while working out...which is not conforming with the rules of the establishment."
But Palazzolo said that's only part of the story.
"He did grunt, and when I told him he wasn't allowed to grunt, he got irate at me, he swore, and he yelled at me," Palazzolo said. "I asked him not to [grunt), he got irate and nasty, and I can't have him in my facility if he's gonna do those kind of things."
Argibay denied he yelled, cursed, or acted inappropriately. He demanded an apology from the gym and its manager.
"It's an attack on my character, and it's very embarrasing, and an insult," Argibay said. "At the end of the day, after serving your community as a corrections officer, the last thing I want is to be escorted out of the gym by the local authorities."
Palazzolo is standing her ground.
"I'm not out to hurt anybody," she said. "If he feels I hurt his feelings, I apologize for that, but I do not apologize for the way I handled the situation and I am not apologizing for our etiquette at Planet Fitness."
It's not personal, she said, it's policy. Grunters should go elsewhere." |

I've yet to see one that looked worth a damn pop up on there in the last few months, although I didn't bother to check this week.
There is a nice one at US Fitness Equipment beside me that is a really nice commercial piece for $500. they've cut the price in half on it in the last 3 months, and I want to see if they'll drop the price even further if it doesn't sell by Christmas.
I have a lot of other things to spend my money on in the coming months, and I have a simple set of squat stands that I can utilize in the time being. I just need to go pick them up from home.
